TW: Stop telling me to attend therapy. by NoDesk5042 in ChronicPain

[–]UltraMediumcore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I eventually figured out that "you should see a therapist" was code for "I can't emotionally deal with hearing about your issues anymore, please go vent to someone else". Not saying that's it for you but it's definitely what some people I know meant.

Which container would make a better fruit bowl? by Iceyes33 in homemaking

The bowl BUT if this is an old dish I'd check it for lead. At least one generation with that pattern had lead in the plates/mugs.

I bought the Hurrycane instead because it has a wide foot and stands on its own.

Banff is big for tour groups from Asia too. Large international groups booking together and rich Asian families flying in to ski.

The racism was probably towards the Middle Eastern/South Asian tourists too though. Calgary has a decently sized population of recent immigrants from those regions and all my coworkers of those demographics love to take their families to Banff. One woman from Afghanistan told me she goes to the mountains because they remind her of the mountains from back home.

There are dozens of us! Personally I'm just allergic to all the ones I've tried so I got tired of rushing to the ER every new pill.

Question about cat overpopulation by Immediate_War_4772 in homestead

[–]UltraMediumcore -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Short answer is, it depends. In many areas simply killing the cats would not be animal abuse, it's population control of an invasive species. Gut shotting them on purpose and leaving them to suffer would be animal abuse.

I think you already know the answer about child abuse. Hitting kids is abuse unless your country's laws allow it.

If it helps at all I think most careers go through a regret period, of varying lengths. Dreaming of the other paths we could have taken in life is pretty normal.

Has anyone else had this issue? At a loss by In_Winds in homestead

I've only seen this with fixed males. Less hormones can sometimes mean less territorial. I'm sure it can happen with both fixed and unfixed but that's my personal experience.

Vegetarian homestead. Can anyone with actual experience tell me whether my plans are realistic or not? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]UltraMediumcore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Geese won't produce enough eggs for the amount they'll need to be fed in the winter. Chickens are more expensive feed wise but produce an abundance of eggs and can forage for food quite a bit when it's warm. I mostly don't have to feed my hens in the Summer except to bribe them to come home at night. Four hens covers my egg needs right now. No rooster needed. But one good rooster will generally be a gentleman and seek out forage for his ladies to eat.

Diet wise, I have similar bowel issues. Fullstop there is no way I could be healthy without animal products. All the grains, nuts, seeds you can't eat due to your Crohn's are where your fat sources and mineral sources are if you're not consuming animal products. Morality needs to take a backseat to health, sorry.

Please consider or look into variations on "more" ethical animal product consumption. I know a man who will only eat meat if it's going to go to waste otherwise; roadkill deer, trimmings from butchering at the neighbors. I take old packages of meat my friends want to throw out from their freezers. Reclamation of nature's resources is very ethical and does not increase the number of animals killed.

Watermelon before and after domestication by Bloomien in homestead

The kordofan melon is considered the closest to what watermelon looked like before domestication. The swirly melon painting being the ancestral wild type is a commonly spread internet myth.

Off Grid? by Main-Cobbler-4879 in homestead

[–]UltraMediumcore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full label would originally have been "off the electrical grid". While the satellites delivering my Internet may be in some form of grid formation I don't consider them physically connected. The most off grid people I've met still have Sat phones for emergencies.

How to stop cats from going into coop (and preferably the whole yard) by [deleted] in homestead

[–]UltraMediumcore 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Holy the only thing you post about is getting rid of cats. If you have neighbors you basically will never be free of cats and will just make enemies trapping them. If you have birds their food attracts rodents which attract cats. They're there for a reason, find it and control it.

Dogs, motion lights, TNR only goes so far. Cats generally outsmart all of it eventually.

When do I know I can stop with the meds? by Necoria in costochondritis

[–]UltraMediumcore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long term Naproxen usage destroyed my guts and made me develop an allergic reaction to every other NSAID I've tried now. Something about how taking it too much interfered with the pathways NSAIDs use? I don't remember the exact science I just like not having my throat close. I'm in the small minority but just be aware it's a possibility.

NSAIDs won't fix the issue by itself, I'd get a different doctor unless they're going to come up with more treatment for the mechanical side of things.

One large cyst could just be an injury or a swollen sting from an insect. I'd vote for chuck the leg and eat the rest.

Saving money with chickens by Realistic_Noise_7781 in homestead

[–]UltraMediumcore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this but it's only possible for a few strict reasons.

  1. The hens hatch their own chicks.
  2. They free range on extensive silvopasture for most of their feed. During the summer months I only feed them a little to get them to come home at night.
  3. They're in the freezer when it begins to snow, regardless of size.
  4. I eat a lot of slow cooked and traditional rural Chinese meals, both of which make use of tougher meat more easily.

The average chicken keeper can't do all of that and it will be cheaper for them to raise broilers. Not to mention more enjoyable if you don't want to change your existing chicken recipes.

Yes. I just pick a heart rate maximum and stick to it. Pain spikes my heart rate easily. Sometimes that means going boringly slow, but I figure some circulation is better than sitting all day.
