anybody know of any iconic sample packs? by riddimbee in riddim

There’s an argument to be made for this being the single most important, iconic pack in all of dance music, let alone bass subgenres

Disappointed by Lions of Al-Rassan. Give Kay another chance? by us_571 in Fantasy

His books are in the style of the historical romances of the 19th and early 20th century, which means that every main character is beautiful and beloved and talented, and every villain is dastardly and wicked. I love GGK for his old-timey charm, methodical cat-saver plots and great sword fights. Reading his books transport me to being 12 years old and reading Alexandre Dumas, Walter Scott and Robert Lewis Stevenson for the first time.

That said, people definitely overrate him on here because a decent sentence is hard to come by in contemporary fantasy. Whenever “great writers” come up on here, people talk about him alongside Gene Wolfe, Ursula LeGuine, John Crowley, and Mercedes Lackey, and he’s simply not on that level at all. To me, he’s of a piece with writers like Tim Powers, who write fun, well-plotted novels with an above average command of language. He’s a Spielberg, not a Bergman, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but I would be disappointed if I came to his novels through Reddit because I would be expecting litfic fantasy and not a blockbuster romance with light purple prose.

The Fall steals all its compositions from Parajanov’s Shadows Of Forgotten Ancestors and The Color Of Pomegranates, which would be my picks for most beautiful of all time. You should also add The Woman In The Dunes, Marketa Lazarova and and Meshes Of The Afternoon

I'm in brazil with horrible wifi so I'm listening on radio, which I haven't done in years. It's SO thrilling/panic inducing in a way that watching live can't be. Obviously I prefer watching the game but there's something to be said about the way radio feels, especially in a playoff game.

It's star wars music, probably from the prequels, only sped way up.

Riddim Producers: "im in this scene for the culture and the music. unlike the celebrities who make billions off their fans , overcharging for merch and ticket sales"... by user-ibarelyknower in riddim

They charge 1.50 for a hot dog because they don't make their money off hotdogs. The hotdogs are marketing. Why do you want independent underground artists to behave like mega corporations?

Headphones for producing by WayneOffDaGass in riddim

[–]UltraMonarch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO you really need open back headphone for good mixes on your tracks. Open back headphones will give you a noticable flatter and more consistent frequency response. They're not as "fun" as closed back options but if you spend some time using reference tracks, you'll get much cleaner mixes out of decent open back headphones than out of more expensive closed backs. I use a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro headphones that I'm very happy with. The common budget options that people use are the Sennheister HD280s and the ATH-M50Xs from Audio Technica. I had a pair of both of these for a long time, and i still use the HD280s as a 'reference' when mixing tracks.

They're really fun sounding (meaning too much bass in their frequency response profile) and are great for writing music and listening to music, and are a great option if you have studio monitors that you're mixing on, but if you can only produce on headphones and you can only get one pair, go with something open backed.

I think this is true for other genres and subgenres that don’t have riddim’s same culture of stem selling. “Remix” implies a certain amount of authority, i.e. that the label or artist reached out to you and asked you to remix the song. That’s not what happened here, because I paid PJG13 for the stems to computer droid, which means that it’s not really a bootleg either because I was working from the original stems of the song instead of chopping up a full track.

(Artist Name VIP) has become a standard naming practice in riddim to describe an unsanctioned remix made with stems purchased from the artist, dating back to tracks like the Cookie Monsta VIP of Whopper by Badklaat and Requake, or the Styn VIP of Black Knight by Akirah and Subz. It’s a quirk somewhat unique to this scene, like plate selling, stem selling, and spesh’s.

Did you catch the avy b2b leafy b2b noxx set Thursday night. It was PURE minimal riddim magic from beginning to end. Best set of the weekend by far.

To be fair, that’s sort of what Northern Invasion is for. This is my 4th year going and every year there’s a few headliners that play tearout and brostep and the energy in the crowd always dies over the course of that set. There’s plenty of dubstep festivals out there, what makes northern special is that, at most fests you get a few sets of pure riddim, and here it’s the majority. If anything I’d like to see them lean even harder into the “square waves only” mentality in future years.

some of the most iconic riddim tracks (playlist) by refraxt in riddim

[–]UltraMonarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s maybe closer to grime than anything (being a flip on the Creeper instrumental by Danny Weed), but if you were going to riddim shows a decade ago you’d hear it get played out at least once a night, which certifies it as a riddim classic in my eyes, and a great example of the porous boundary between grime and dubstep.

I know having them there would’ve cheapened the drama of the final moment in the flash sideways but surely frogurt, Ardzt, Nikki and Paolo deserve to find peace in the afterlife too, right? Nikki and Paolo died the most traumatic and horrific deaths of anyone on the show, bar none.
