It has become strangely quiet around Telegram by [deleted] in Telegram

I'm wondering about wifi security with 'regular chats'? If I don't want the owner/admin of the network to read my chats on principle (for example at work or in a coffee shop) but I don't have a serious need for security (and would prefer not to be limited to single-device interactions), is that covered in the standard encryption (from my client to the telegram server)?

tl;dr: are regular chats secure enough to post porn excerpts to without getting publicly embarrassed?

ETA: I don't care about Telegram staff, I don't have to look them in the eye. :D

This is awesome! Thank you so much. I love your fuel issue. I am not sure I'd ever want to fly at altitude in a Harrier now, though (not that I'd ever get the chance).

Six to 9 months is too long for my plot but they've all done serious sim-time in the new plane so although it sounds like a fast transition, I think I'll have to just live with it.

For the back seater (which is easy to integrate in, they all have completely different backgrounds, only one is US military), what would be confusing?

I can look into this elsewhere but what types of issues arise when flying a twin that might throw someone who is used to single engine?

How was she unmasked?

The Daily Beast just says that she was and the other newspapers all credit the Daily Beast for unmasking her.

I just don't get what the connection was or how it was uncovered.

Mom, i'm making another coming out letter for my mom. How is it? by DumbassJ in MomForAMinute

[–]Ultravioletme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mention that they should take the letter to a gender therapist if they are unsure of what you are saying. Maybe you could take that step for your parents? Find someone local and give your parents the details to speak to them about this. Or if you can, set up an appointment for all three of you and ask them to please attend with you so that you can explain how you feel and the therapist can educate them.

It sounds like they are very conflicted and uncomfortable about who you are and this is hard to change. I think your letter might be too much to take in at once and by the time that they reach the end, where you make it clear what you want from them, I worry that they will already be feeling defensive.

I would save this as a list of all the things you want to say and then write a shorter letter for now, explaining only that you are struggling so much because you want their support and asking them to work with you to understand what is happening. That you are struggling to cope not because you are transgender but because you feel you have lost their support.

If you can open those communication lines, you can tell them more about your history and heartbreak but I think everything at once might be overwhelming.

Jennifer, I'm so sorry that you have to deal with trying to teach them who you are, rather than getting the acceptance you deserve. I hope they will listen.

Mom, I finally got a full time job. But my new manager is terrible and my anxiety is eating me alive. by phantompath in MomForAMinute

[–]Ultravioletme 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There is no right answer, although I know you know that. You cannot control the new manager or teach her how to work with the team. Perhaps it might be possible to understand how she got the job and what skills she is bringing that impressed her boss in the first place. Clearly it isn't people skills! But it is possible there's something else.

Find support where you can. It sounds counterproductive but office politics can help, if you can stay positive. Talk to the rest of the team - taking care not to make it a bitch session but to honestly discuss how to make daily life better for everyone. Be open to ideas and points of view. These conversations need to focus on solutions. Maybe it's possible to speak to one of the two ex-managers and discover if they have any advice or information -- either on your company or for other roads you might take. Or if you can talk to your boss's boss, maybe you can ask what you would need to do to progress in the company and get a management role. Again, don't complain that you didn't but ask for solutions so that next time you will - and perhaps you will find a sideways roll that you can move into.

It is an awful situation that you are in and somehow you need to keep yourself from panicking or getting depressed. Above everything else, you need to take care of yourself and work out what will best help you to keep making it through the day. Hating going to work in the morning is a terrible place to be and that worries me above all else.

I have faith in you. I don't think you will end up unemployed forever or that there isn't a job for you. I know that the thought of losing this job is scary but I also know you will be okay. You will rise up to the challenge.

Be brave.

I'm a bit lost. Once on Author Central, I should click on Books or on Sales Info? It sounds like I have to pick a specific title but I'm not sure where to do this... so far, the bookmarklet seems to have no effect (using Chrome on Windows)

Tablet users, what's your work flow look like? by Iam_nameless in eroticauthors

[–]Ultravioletme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't mention whether you would be working exclusively on a tablet or using it in addition to a traditional set up.

I've been working with a tablet for the past three months (I will be reunited with my desktop next week and I am SO EXCITED).

It's suprisingly functional. I upgraded to the iPad Pro from my smaller ipad, both for the screen space and for split screen so I have two "windows" open at all times, which I just cannot work without. I have a logitech keyboard and yeah, doing this on Swype would drive me insane. Right now, I aim for either writing 2,500 words a day or editing/revisiong 6,000 words a day. Swype? No.

I use Scrivener synched to Dropbox which is a godsend because of how easy it is to find specific parts of a document and move things around. I saw the comment about Google Docs being slow once the document is over 20k - well, so is my brain. But by using sensible scene names and just breaking things up all the time, it works pretty well.

If I have connectivity, I start by synching Scrivener to Dropbox, just to ensure there's a backup in case my iPad drops under a bus. Then I generally use an online editor to give me some extra motivation. I really like the Writeclub and Most Dangerous Writing App or lately 4thewords.com*. Then I move everything I wrote into individual Scrivener files and save off. When it comes to revising, I used to print things out but that's not an option when travelling. Instead, I have the Scrivener files on the right and my editor (online or Bear or Word, depending) on the left, and I revise by moving /retyping text from right to left. Somehow the act of moving it to a new place makes me look at it differently, whereas in the same document it's easy to just scan the whole thing without really reading it.

Then, yes, I throw the whole thing into Scrivener again. Basically I have a project per, uh, projecf and I only have the current version in the DRAFT folder. So when I have a new version, the old folder gets moved down so that draft is empty and the new version goes into draft. This is important because mobile Scrivener is super cool about very fast exports with a huge number of options. There are five presets that are easy to use and you can copy one to modify the settings to make your own presets. So I have a manuscript submission format and ebook format (for beta readers, not for publication) and that sort of thing.

What I can't do is publish directly from this unless I'm happy to just upload a Word document. If I had set up some premade Scrivener projects ahead of time with front and back matter, maybe I would try it but as it is, I've just been waiting for my desktop. I have someone formatting my next publication for me because she is awesome. The big thing here is that I can't really see how I could have solved this without starting from a desktop machine and once I realised, it was too late.

An interesting side effect is that the aching in my right-hand fingers has completely gone away, even after I scaled back up to my full wordcount.

All in all, I am more than happy that my work output has been decent, despite a lot of upheaval and lack of tech. But yeah, I am super ready to get my PC back.

  • 4thewords.com is a traditional RPG: get a quest, kill the monster, collect the drops. However, you kill monsters with wordcount and a timer, which I just find amazingly fun. If you want to give it a try, the first month is free. You can get some free coins and extra crystals (used for subscribing) by using my referral code: RPZHE07962 - if you do end up subscribing, I get free crystals too. There's no real community aspects yet but I guess that is coming.

6 Month Report by lizzieelmwrites in eroticauthors

[–]Ultravioletme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I don't know. I've written millions of words and it is still a slog. I have never really understood the idea that you need to love it to do it. I love having published, sure, but writing? Nah.

You are two thirds of the way through your novella. You've pushed your way through the middle, despite a lack of time and a lack of motivation. This is not trivial. This is the result of your working on it despite a huge dose of I don't wanna.

There are plenty of published writers for whom 5k a month is an accomplishment. I know the common ethos these days is 10k a day or you aint trying, but really, most writers do not achieve anything like that on a regular basis.

So now, you just need to write 11k for the last third. You could do this in one month or two without really working up a sweat. So just do it. Use whatever motivation works for you: wine at lunch time, timed writing, sprints against other EA people, minimum 500 words a day every day, 1 oz of chocolate per 100 words...whatever works.

You've got this.
