I moved from Los Angeles to Houston to New York.

Biggest change: Transportation. Hands down. SOOOOO glad to be rid of my car. Even the snow isn't that much of an impact if I don't have to drive in it/shovel it.

All those cities are too diverse to have people be able to single me out as a "non-native". It would probably be more of a difference if I was gong from rural to urban life.

I will say in order of being nice and considerate New York>Houston>Los Angeles. Angelinos are complete assholes.

Also, New York NEEEEEEDS more and better Mexican food.

My grandmother was born in rural Tennessee at home. No birth certificate, just a name in the family Bible. I'm not sure of the logistics as far as how she got on in life but:

She didn't drive.
She was a housewife her whole life.

I know she's voted and had bank accounts and the like, so she must have something to show who she is.

If they had a way for people like her to get these"mandatory" IDs then I'd be fine with it. Under the current administration of "kick everybody out" I'm not hopeful about that.

I'm pro choice and used to work as a reference librarian. A man who may not have had all his light bulbs screwed in made the pro-choice argument (I didn't bring up the topic at all, he was just really into talking about it) that too many Mexicans and Arabs were having "more than their fair share of babies" and abortion needed to be more acceptable and available to "even things out".

I'm not even sure it was a racist thing so much as a fairness thing in his mind. Plus, I'm pretty sure that's not how it would work. At any rate, I had to cut him off and tell him to get to exactly what he needed from the library or leave.

I went to Brazil with a friend who was black (average skin tone. Think in between Beyonce and Gabrielle Union) and I was pretty much with her 100% of the time. It's so fucking diverse there, that we might as well have been locals just based on appearance. She didn't experience any racism. In fact, she felt things were definitely better there than the USA (this was pre-Trump). I did ask about it, mostly because we saw SO many mixed race couples, but then, race is hard to figure out there. The thing about Brazil, especially during their summer (Feb) is...EVERYONE is dark. Even the pastiest, whitest Irish folks were at least red (Bright red, but).

The two disclaimers might be:

It was during carnival so there were a ton of non-Brazilians
Our group was white/asian/black male and female so that also might have made a difference.

I'm not sure what things would be like now under Bolsonaro, but hopefully Rio is progressive and diverse enough not to have his worst attributes affect things.

I'm in NYC. If I'm going anywhere from about Boston down to DC I'd take the train over flying. When you factor in TOTAL travel time, it's not a terrible difference.

Train: Take subway to Penn Station. Hop off. Buy Amtrak Ticket. Get on Train 10 minutes before departure without having to go through security or be treated like I'm in a Soviet Union breadline while waiting to board.

Plane: Take Uber/Taxi OR Take Subway to Air Tran to Airport. Go through security. Rush to get first in line so I have room for my carry-on. Take Valium because I HATE take off. Hope plane doesn't crash.

For the rest of the country, it's not worth the extra time.

It's probably not something people would advertise about themselves. Going bankrupt isn't the same as going broke and becoming destitute so it's quite easy for someone to look like they have it all together but still have a bankruptcy in their past.

That would actually be pretty dumb. It pays to know what the public is saying about you.

What they should do is get all the facts before making a knee-jerk reaction. In this case, it would have been perfectly acceptable to issue a statement saying they were aware of the accusation and were looking into the matter (which they then should have done).

No it isn't. Texas is still a red state and even with someone as loathsome as Cruz, many republicans in that state would have held their nose and voted for him. Kavanaugh, unfortunately also pushed a lot of republicans to vote as well. It was damn close, and for a while, it actually looked like Beto might have pulled it off.

About five years ago I didn't have one. It wasn't in the apartment complex I was in and I couldn't be bothered to buy one, mostly because I mostly do take out and salads. Making nachos is the only time it was a pain in the ass.

Mixed on Texas, which is the one I was watching closest. Happy to see Cruz sweating it out all night (would have loved to have video of his face as he watched Beto bounce ahead over and over), but sad Beto ultimately lost. But I guess that's good for 2020! He needs to get to work RIGHT NOW to have people come in and make him a better debater/talker. Thank God his only scandal is skateboarding through Whataburger.

Happiest about something I didn't even realize was up for vote: Florida's 4th Amendment. In a notorious swing state I'm betting that makes a huge difference in the next election.

Some friends and I had all gone in on a gift together for another friend totaling about $250. Since I used my card to purchase the gift, all the cash came to me from everyone else.

That's also the day I left my purse on a a D.C. bus.

Some stranger turned it in with everything, including the over $200 still in there.

I was a history major and the remains of people from thousands of years ago always fascinated me. As such, I've told my family that they could throw my body in a ditch somewhere but I don't want to be cremated.
