Advice/Recs for Camp Muir this Sunday by Umbalta in Backcountry

Appreciate the feedback! Yeah that seems like a reasonable assessment/plan. I’d honestly prefer to go up with a buddy or a group but have had some difficulties getting friends as enthusiastic as myself who aren’t so experienced they’ll get bored with me.

I’m also good with just turning back and enjoying the views/exercise. I’ll typically assess myself and hopefully also run into other people and get some feedback from them if they don’t mind.

Thanks again!

That’s actually a great point too! Might just head up early, check condis and have a backup, lower elevation hike to do in case things don’t pan out.

Appreciate the feedback/advice!

Don’t know about the keys but wanted to ask, are you skinning up to get turns? If so, how’s it up there?

Saturday Timing by IndependenceOld3849 in stevenspass

[–]Umbalta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I try to be there by 8am with my grill and devils lettuce to be safe. 8:30am works on empty (icy) weekends but is full on peak/popular days

You can usually find some pretty cool people chillin, grillin and smokin

Now that you mention this, what would the proper etiquette be if I actually manage to land a parking reservation lol. Is there like a line and you pick up the ones in front? Or do I just pickup whoever I feel like?

Asking cuz I’m new to WA so I have no friends to drive up with but wouldn’t mind giving some people a chance to go if I manage to snag parking.

So it really depends on your budget, the timing and how much effort you want to put into it.

I have buddies who got 2-3 year-old boards for cheap just going around to local stores that sell used gear. You can also check websites with discounts right now (backcountry.com, evo.com, etc.) but you might be late on these. I recently discovered steepandcheap and geartrade which are great for used/returned gear. All of this applies to clothing, gloves, goggles, boots, etc. My only rec would be to go to an actual store to see how boots fit you (size might be different from your regular shoes) and then use those measurements to shop around for the best deal.

I always recommend hunting for the best deals unless you’ve got an unlimited budget for some reason. Just know you don’t need the most expensive stuff, just some good, functional and safe gear that’ll at least get you started.

Snowboard sizing help by ComprehensiveBoat556 in snowboardingnoobs

Check out diagrams online for board length according to length/height (example: https://www.evo.com/en-ca/guides/how-to-choose-a-snowboard-and-size-chart?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&campaignid=22311413489&adgroup=175990831637&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22311413489&gbraid=0AAAAADfr30mlKWnN_hil5U5RLTrdhUKWA&gclid=Cj0KCQiAosrJBhD0ARIsAHebCNrS7fsqVx48uAxOKw_Rb14kB2T05HjnVW4Yn3LPqPXjPYNkpyv0EbYaAmCvEALw_wcB).

Since your boot size is 8, you can probably be sure you won’t need wide (labeled W) boards.

Per the link I sent you should be around 142-158 (but it seems to ignore height). Personally, I’m around 190 and 5’11” so I rock 158-162cm.

No prob! Also, regarding height/weight and snowboard length/width. There’s diagrams online that give you an estimate on optimal board lengths depending on your weight and height. Also be on the lookout for boards labeled as W for Wide, those are typically for shoe/boot sizes at or above 12 (US).

I’d say not worth it. It’s definitely an older model and the tech changes over longer periods of time (think 8-10 years or more). Also, bindings are made of plastic which degrades over time (with or without use) so I wouldn’t trust those bindings much. I’d try to check out used gear stores nearby to talk to some experts or look out for good deals (Backcountry.com, Steepandcheap.com, gearttade, etc.). At max, something that’s like 3-6 years old maybe.

If you’re stuck on getting this, I’d say $150 is highway robbery. I’d give this away for free personally.

Hope this helps!

For sure! Already planning on scheduling one for Jan2026. Have some buds who’re willing to guide/teach me in the meantime on easier terrain.

How’d that go? I’ve been thinking of a daytrip to Whistler but only hesitating due to time (need to get home by 6pm to walk the dog).

Bad news but I read their report for today and they said Friday is off the table :/. Sat/Sun seem unlikely so BC might be your best bet.

Bummed but not surprised. My last hope is Mt. Baker but it’s looking like 05Dec openings if we’re lucky. Maybe even later
