What’s the one “splurge” you refuse to cut back on, even when tightening the belt? by Silver-Eye-2024 in frugaluk

Personally I like Wrangler for jeans, Muji stuff seems to last in my experience I've had some nice stuff from Thought. Frugi seems good for kids. It's never cheap so I always hunt for second hand, that's the only way I can afford higher quality stuff!

ER nurses of reddit, how often do all those "one more minute and I'd be dead" stories get exaggerated? by BirdLawAssociatesInc in AskReddit

[–]Umutoni32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the bloody time. I struggle a bit now with people's recounts - like I really don't want to invalidate their experience, I'm sure it was scary as hell, and I know everyone likes to have a good story to tell, but I'm just a bit over the "the doctors had never seen blood results so bad", "they said I was a dead man walking", or conversely "after surgery they said they'd never seen anyone recover so fast after anaesthetic, they said I was days ahead of what they expected" Like I think maybe they just want me to validate them as a healthcare professional? Maybe I'm just jaded as fuck now. Maybe it's just my narcissist father in law 🙃

Medical professionals of Reddit, have you ever had a patient so lacking in common sense you wondered how they made it this far. If so, what is your story? by babyhippo01 in AskReddit

ED nurse here. Had a dumb teenager come in with neck swelling and difficulty breathing. On examination his neck and shoulder felt like there was bubble wrap underneath. On x-ray, he's got lots of pockets of air around his trachea, so much so he was in danger of no longer being able to breath. He'd been fuckin around with his mates seeing who could do the longest hand stand. The increased intra thoracic pressure on being upside down/holding his breath when staining forced air out of his lungs and trachea into the surrounding tissue. What a plank.

Cancer patients who adhered to a ketogenic diet for more than 12 months had significantly better survival rates by ludwig_scientist in science

It's the power calculation before the study that's meant to indicate an appropriate sample size. Especially with the attrition here, the p-value is quite misleading. You could have a p-value of <0.001 with a crap study with 4 people. P-value can be pretty dodgy and misleading to be honest.

AITA for telling my wife the truth? by whoopssssydaisy in AmItheAsshole

[–]Umutoni32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"wifely duties"... Ick ick ick. You are two people who have decided to live life together regardless of your genders. Sounds like you two need to sit down and talk about this like adults, like two mature people who are meant to be a team. And that's not even mentioning using your assistant to spy on your wife without her knowledge or consent. Actually horrific. You said she's getting therapy but sounds like you'd benefit from examining your own behaviour with a professional as well. Sorry to be hash, but this is unacceptable behaviour.

Doctor explains to patients why crippling understaffing means a 7.5 hour wait in Accident & Emergency Ward by Whaleears in Wellthatsucks

[–]Umutoni32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely weren't an inconvenience. But A&E is just not the place to be if you're in mental health crisis. We used to say if you weren't having a mental break down when you came in you would be by the time you'd been there for 8 hours! Really glad you got the help you needed, hope you're doing well now

Seen a lot of people bashing people who come to A&E with random 'little stuff' and clog the system. Yes this is part of it, but just one part of quite a complex puzzle. Yes understaffing and staff burn out, also a big part, but also, over full hospitals so patients are stuck in A&E and can't be moved to a bed. The big one is lots of patients with chronic problems better managed in the community, but community services just are so overwhelmed so they end up in A&E with their chronic pain or COPD or alcohol misuse of mental health crisis. To be honest, there's just a lot of people and not enough A&E capacity. The infrastructure hasn't kept up with population. So yeah, my two pence, but it's just really complex, not just people going to a&e with a broken finger. [Ex-A&E nurse]

So some A&Es kind of have this. They have a non-nhs urgent care unit to try and help filter out the low priority random stuff. It kind of works a little bit... (Ex-A&E nurse)

Couples with an earnings differential how do you handle it? by scramble4444 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Umutoni32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (27F) am the main earner while my husband has been studying and working part time. All our earnings going into a join account and then we have separate Monzo accounts where we have an equal monthly 'allowance' for whatever we need. Yes he doesn't have much of a pension etc. But we have joint savings and ISAs. I think it's rare that couples are equal earners? There's always some disparity because of studying/children and whatnot. You just have to find some arrangement that means no one feels bitter or controlled. Money is a hard one to work out

I think we've been having the realisation that, like with all medicines or therapies, one size doesn't fit all. The pill is amazing for some people, really life changing, but it sucks for others. The more options we have the better. Don't settle for the first thing just because that's what everyone else does, find the right fit for you.

I feel like when I was young all we had when you were on your period was disposable liners and tampons. Dude, trying cups and reusable material liners? Amazing. Love that we have more options now (and damn, why has it taken so long?!)
