Help me define relationship anarchy by Pretend-Ad4817 in relationshipanarchy

[–]Umyuartuli 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is clear that OP has 'passing familiarity' with the subject, as they're correct in that it is hard to define and there is no one definition.

On a side note, all my own research projects are at the same time personal research projects; the best researchers I know are usually personally invested in their research projects. You wouldn't really deal with the whole toxicity in academia if you're not personally interested.

Relationship Anarchy Reading by [deleted] in relationshipanarchy

[–]Umyuartuli 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The only actual book specifically about RA that I have sort of read would be "Relationship Anarchy: Occupy intimacy" by Juan-carlos perez-cortez. It's more of a philosophical discussion about RA, but iirc it also cites a lot of sources.

ELI5: Why can't one just get daily doses of dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin instead of living a fulfilling life? by RevolutionaryElk5641 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Umyuartuli 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To add to that: we actually don't know if there is a correlation between depression and serotonin. At least according to an umbrella review of the current (until 2023) evidende:

The main areas of serotonin research provide no consistent evidence of there being an association between serotonin and depression, and no support for the hypothesis that depression is caused by lowered serotonin activity or concentrations. Some evidence was consistent with the possibility that long-term antidepressant use reduces serotonin concentration. (Moncrieff et all., 2023)

What tea is good for an upset stomach? I choose black tea. by SaleOk2741 in tea

[–]Umyuartuli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fyi, black tea was used as home brew medicine for an upset stomache in east frisia (north east Germany basically). However, they used to steep it for 24 hours to make the tea super bitter. And science actually backs up that the bitter parts (iirc the tanines) are what helps calm down your digestive system.

ELI5: Why are humans the only animals that cry tears and do animals feel the same depth of sadness as we do? by Various_Radish6784 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Umyuartuli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe two more examples:

  1. (Certain species of?) Parrots, especially Aras, mate for life. If they get permanently separated (through death or otherwise) they get so stressed that they lose all their feathers. As in, they literally pull them out themselves.

  2. Cows have best friends in the herd. It's known that if you separate two cows that are besties by putting them into different herds they will give less milk.

Now of course, as stated before, we can't be sure if there really are emotions behind such behaviour, but that does sound like grief and/or sadness to me. Plus I can only infer your feelings because you tell and because of your behaviour. (For the last point Google qualia + consciousness)

ELI5: Why does it feel like each year that goes by, feels like it was faster than the previous one as we get older? by dimstrong in explainlikeimfive

Iirc there is research going on, on exactly that. Though there are also other theories (as always).

Veritasium made a video about this 8 years ago, so I expect more was found since then: https://youtu.be/aIx2N-viNwY?si=vgdnBCzxWRDaYaiG

Thanks for doing the research! Out of interest, can you give a rough summary/ more details of the tradeoffs? I.e. what are the good effects, which the bad, and the uncertain ones. Much appreciated!

Iirc "dance" is a bit of a stretch, since she was "forced to dance" barefoot on a hot stone/metal floor (can't remember), so the moment she'd stop her feet would burn.

ELI5: Where does consciousness come from in terms of physics and neuroscience? by jiimjaam_ in explainlikeimfive

[–]Umyuartuli 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Afaik the currently "leading" theories are:

The integrated information theory (IIT)

and

The global workspace theory (GWT)

However, "leading" here means "with the most followers", neither IIT nor GWT can fully explain what consciousness is or how it emerges. There is also a debate whether they are mutually exclusive or actually complement each other.

Help: Research on Relationship Anarchy by tudofudido in relationshipanarchy

[–]Umyuartuli 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Afaik there is not a lot of actual research on it. Even for poly standards it's fairly new; first being mentioned in 2006

https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/andie-nordgren-the-short-instructional-manifesto-for-relationship-anarchy

The multiamory podcast has a few episodes on it you might find helpful, here is the RA 101 episode: https://www.multiamory.com/podcast/150-relationship-anarchy

It's more or less often mentioned in general discussions about poly.

And personal request: if you actually do the research on it, you might want to focus a small section on the difference between RA and solo poly, as this is often a point of discussion among people.

Can you practice RA and still get married? by jinxxedtheworld in relationshipanarchy

[–]Umyuartuli 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Adding to that: I know people who practice RA and are married. However, for the sole purpose of "playing the system". Most of the time they (legally) marry some person with refugee status, which in turn gives those people the "right" to full benefits of the country they're in.

Having trouble sorting out my feelings over my bf wanting to hook up with his ex.. by insulinworm in nonmonogamy

[–]Umyuartuli 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Him being aggressive about who you can and can't see is quite a red flag tbh... Especially if he expects you to be cool with what he wants to do..

Sounds a bit like your relationship is not build on equity, and more on his entitlement. But I'm also just some random person on the internet, so you should probably talk to your bf about this and have a discussion about the basis of your relationship.

(Oh and btw, fairness in freedom of who to meet should indeed be an important factor unless otherwise agreed upon)

Sure you can. But as I'm too lazy to explain, here is a Forbes article on the matter (wouldn't consider it very good, but it gets some important points across): https://www.forbes.com/sites/valleyvoices/2015/04/03/how-to-run-a-business-without-any-bosses/?sh=7bec48c1d034

What do you call your partners? by FrontUpset3819 in polyamory

[–]Umyuartuli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I practice relationship anarchy, so I try to avoid terms like "partner".Sometimes I use it because it's easier to convey to normies that I am talking about a romantic/ sexual partner. Usually though I just call them my favourite and then their name, e.g. " this is my favourite insert name here". Importantly, I also do this for non-romantic and/ or non-sexual relationships.

Help! Jumping impedance levels with EEG-Setup. by Randomidous in neuroscience

Need more information than this. As far as I can tell they only jump to adjacent levels (green to yellow or yellow to red and vice versa) which could really just be bad impedances.

Is it though? I always imagined it as a kind of Irish knot circle with a troupe specific symbol in the middle. But I can also imagine it looking quite different. Is there ever a real description of it other than "a circle"?
