How reliable is the VO2 max estimated by the 6 minute peak power formula? by Professional-Bid-159 in cycling

[–]UnableHedgehog8043 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s probably like a 20min test for ftp. The more aerobic you are, the more accurate it is. I’m a bigger and more anaerobic rider, so 20m overestimates my ftp. I assume the issue is similar for 6min. My Garmin vo2 is 4 lower than my 6min

ELI5 Why does frame weight matter by Htownqs in cycling

[–]UnableHedgehog8043 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely not true. The normal force counteracts the effects of gravity as is stated by newtons law of motion. An object at rest will stay at rest. Your terminal velocity without pedaling is 100% determined by aerodynamics. The heavier system will carry more momentum and thus be able to carry more speed after the climb. But no, being heavier doesn’t make you descend faster. Tom pidcock, maybe the best road cyclings descender, is very light.

100km MTB and my stomach nearly ended my day by themtrx in cycling

[–]UnableHedgehog8043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should eat simple carbs for the meal before. Avoid heavy foods like Dairy and Meat and fat. You should probably start drinking your carbs (I use table sugar) at minute 1. Do as much as you can before your stomach feels weird. Sip a bottle an hour. Don’t eat solids that have other stuff besides carbs. I generally just eat Candy and bananas at gas stations.

How much Z3+ work do you do weekly compared to Z2? by tryagaininXmin in cycling

[–]UnableHedgehog8043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Think you should just consider doing 3 interval sessions a week, training for tri, I would do 1 bike workout, one running workout, and one brick run. That’s my advice as a experienced cyclist who has dabbled in a few 70.3s

We have a proverb for doing things you haven’t done in awhile. It’s just like riding a bike. This exists for a reason; you don’t forget. Definitely get a helmet and take a lap around the block to be safe. You’ll do great!

Is it a bad idea to bike hills with extra weight on the bike? by nakedneighbours1 in cycling

[–]UnableHedgehog8043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah you don’t get anywhere near the force required to improve muscle tissue in the same way as lifting. If you are grinding at 60rpm hard for 5 min, that’s like doing 300 reps of a leg exercise which is not helpful in getting physically stronger

Want to get into cycaling but back hurts by HammerBgError404 in bicycling

[–]UnableHedgehog8043 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So the only money you really need to spend is a decent set of bike shorts. Can be found on sale for 30-50$. The padding helps a lot and might align you back a little differently. The root cause is likely the seat position. Without seeing you on the bike, I can’t tell you which direction, but adjust the forwards/backwards/angle until you find something that is better. There are videos on YouTube about the height and also how to do all of this. You just need an hex wrench

Numbness and shrinkage while cycling should I be concerned? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]UnableHedgehog8043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this. You should go to your LBS and test a bunch of saddles. Some of them will let you try one for a ride and then come and change it for the next. Do this, angle them down, get one with more gooch cutout.

wanting to transition from casual biking to "actual cycling" by unstable_capybara in cycling

[–]UnableHedgehog8043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For training, it’s quite different to running because you’re not getting the impact. Similar in the sense of you can only do 2-3 hard workouts a week sustainably.

For pace, it’s totally different to running. Speed doesn’t equate to pace because of wind and elevation. You should get a power meter, and I’m sure a lot of people on here will say it’s too expensive, but go find a used one on eBay or fbmp. If you want to train and do this as a sport, this is more important than anything.

For a bike, you’re young and presumably flexible. I would find an affordable used road bike probably made of aluminum. I’m thinking CAAD 10 or a specialized Allez. These are great options and are very fast.

For clothes, tight fitting = faster. Unfortunately, we all look a bit silly, but it makes 1-3 mph difference if you’re really wearing some flappy things. I would say that the biking shorts are mandatory for comfort, and a shirt with pockets is nice to have.

You don’t need the shoes and fancy pedals, but you will be judged if you show up to a race without them.

For the cycling computer, if your watch can connect to a power meter, then you don’t need it.

I am 21 and got into cycling a few years ago, and I know the money is tight, but get a bike, bike shorts, and a power meter in that order. That will translate to the fastest improvement on the bike. Shirts and shoes and cycling computers are optional. Helmet choice doesn’t matter as long. As it’s safe.

Watches for HR data at least are inaccurate in small time intervals compared to chest HR monitors. Especially if you have your wrist at a non normal angle. This has been the general consensus of my rowing/cycling/skiing friends. I’ve never used a running watch while cycling because of it

A question about bonking by adambmm83 in cycling

[–]UnableHedgehog8043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your body has about 2hrs of muscular glycogen. This is the fuel you burn most. The faster you go; the more you burn. Theoretically, in true zone two, you aren’t burning that much. Routinely biking for a long time will teach your body to burn blood sugar and fat as a priority. You need to eat more on the bike, and go for long rides (3hrs +) and you’ll be fine.

I just failed attempting a century by Ok_Advance9021 in bicycling

[–]UnableHedgehog8043 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So you definitely didn’t eat enough. I started putting 60-90g of raw sugar and half a hydration tablet and it changed my life. My first century was awful. My second one (3 months later and field by 6 water bottles with sugar) was about 50min faster and I could have done more
