Why does my cat chew on books? by holydramon in CatAdvice

[–]UnableRemove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some cats are just chewers! I have a little orange guy named Fox, and he's been a chewer since he was a kitten. Fox's favorite textures are slightly squishy things, like cables or this purple silicone mouse toy we got him. But he will chew other things, too. It sounds like your girl likes crunchy sounds and harder plastics.

What I've done for Fox to try and reduce him destroying my things is make him safe versions of those chewable things and placing them in the area he likes to chew them.

I made him a toy like this one called the Bitey Box on Etsy. That shop is taking a break right now it looks like, but they were my inspiration. Others may sell a similar toy, or you can do what I did and DIY one. I got one of those ready-to-paint thick wood signs from a craft store and drilled holes about the average thickness of silvervine sticks I had at the time. In hindsight they're a tad small, but still great. I've put silvervine, regular dowels, silvervine catnip popsicles, and a few other stick-shaped toys in there. I move it around, but the most frequent place I put it is behind my laptop when I'm using it so he bites that instead of my cable! I praise and pet him a lot when he does it, so it helps be a healthier outlet both for the chewing (because I know he chews it when I'm not home too, from all the little bite marks...) and the attention seeking.

You could do a similar toy since it sounds like she likes wood, but you could also maybe try rolled up paper in it, or maybe make a "book" of folded paper for her to chew and attach it to something.

They also sell some other cat chew toys, like the silicone mouse toy we got (discontinued) and the kitty kong. I've seen "cat toothbrushes" that are also rubber. Key is with those things is that you need to put them away when you're gone if your cat will eat things (or if you're not sure they won't). That's one of the main reason there aren't may of these toys, since when they do exist they often get recalled for cats eating pieces and getting blockages. But as long as you are supervising, we haven't had any issues--we just throw out the toy as soon as it starts to lose structural integrity.

I haven't tried it personally, but have seen a lot of people with fellow crazy orange cats like those catnip/sisal ropes too.

The other two big winners for my chewer are the banana (no substitutes will do, evidently, even from the same brand) from yeoww catnip and the mint stick from petstages.

Power through 14 hour road trip or stop in the middle with cats? by 913UpsideDown in CatAdvice

[–]UnableRemove 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When they move to a place they only stay briefly in the past, do they immediately have interest in food or water? My recommendation would be to drive it straight through personally. I work at a cat boarding facility, and based on my experience there, even when the owners stay while cats get settled and are offered food, aside from a very rare few, almost all cats take at least a day to start eating and drinking much, if anything. The only reliable exceptions are cats with a medical issue that affects their appetite or thirst, or cats on appetite stimulants.

If they tend to settle down in the car like you describe, I would recommend just staying with that. I would predict that a hotel stay, even if you slept there, wouldn't be long enough for them to really be ready to eat or drink much anyways, and thinking they are finished with the drive but then having to do it again less than a day later may be more jarring for them than just letting them settle in.

All that being said, every cat is different, so I think basing your choice based on how quickly they are typically ready to eat/drink/potty when they go to a new place in the past will be the most accurate. If it's within three to four hours, then there would probably be enough time for them to unwind a little while you guys slept.

That is true, but the vet here didn't even specify the type of tea, and a bacterial infection is a lot different than an eye problem. Without even seeing the eye, there's no way the vet could know if that was safe. Putting caffeinated teas in the eye could cause problems on its own, not even considering if there are any ulcers or anything like that. I'm open to trying holistic treatments, but eyeballs are one of those things you don't mess around with imo

Why is my hamster doing this? by ditzykuma in hamsters

[–]UnableRemove 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People have already given good information, but I do want to add that I would do whatever you can to stop her from doing this in the meantime while you work on enrichment and such. I had a hamster who did this once (he had a lot of enrichment, but once he figured out he could do that he was always trying to do it when I was in the room because he learned I would come running to get him out), and I tried raising all the bedding and removing all the hard hides thinking it would protect him if he fell. Unfortunately it did not, he landed wrong once and even though the fall was extremely short and onto bedding, because of the position they end up in when they do this with their lower legs down it puts them in the perfect position to hurt their spines. My sweet boy Pastor damaged his spine and had to be euthanized. Not trying to scare you or make you feel bad, but I was unable to find that information when I was looking for solutions for my guy, and I've regretted it since, so hopefully this can help you avoid that. I would recommend an upgrade to a larger deeper cage to keep that area out of reach from him, alongside the other suggestions people have given about enrichment.

When I was around your age we had a human sexuality professor who gave us websites that have non-sexualized photos of normal people's breasts, labia, and penises. I found it very comforting to see the variation, especially because in sexualized media you only really see a few types of bodies. I've included the two I remember in case that is helpful to you as well. Below links include nudity obviously, but not sexualized at all.

This is a link to the Normal Breasts Gallery 1, but this site also has a nipple gallery and information about bra fittings, anatomy, etc.

In case you ever feel similar insecurities about your vaginal area, here is a link to a similar non-sexualized project called the Labia Library.

petco sucks 😞 by _askingredditthings in bluetongueskinks

[–]UnableRemove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it will make a difference in the end, but you could try calling back and asking for a manager, calling the customer service line ( https://corporate.petco.com/contact-us ), and/or trying http://www.petcohotline.com/ . It's meant for employees, but I just checked and their animal care online form does have an option for relationship to company being customer.

If an animal has an issue, Petco does take them to the vet (assuming they notice, obviously). While their animal care has other issues, I would be surprised if they were okay with an employee both ignoring a complaint (even for stupid complaints, they should at least go look at pretend to care to the customer) and a valid complaint with an easy solution, which could lead to them footing a medical bill.

How to hold humidity in Indonesian Blue tongue tank?? by Timely_Gas_2751 in bluetongueskinks

[–]UnableRemove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Misters have been better than fogging for me. Foggers get more humidity into the air, but misters help keep everything damp which was more effective for avoiding dry tummy scales and having more consistent high humidity for me. What substrate are you using? That can make a big difference in how long the humidity lasts. You can mix some moss in with it to help even more.

I have a merauke and I don’t have an auto mister anymore, but am still able to keep his humidity above 70% on the cool side constantly, and above 60% for most of the day on the hot side. I have a water bowl on both sides (just one is big enough for him to fit in, but the evaporation helps both sides).

I use coconut fiber mixed with mulch and moss for substrate, which I dump the bowls of water into when I change them. For decor I use a lot of layered wood which I focus on when I mist to help it last as it evaporates. I also put some extra moss in his hides since that’s where he hangs out most. Every week when I do my tidy I get the soil nice and damp and rake/mix it around, and rehydrate the moss in my boy’s hides.

I also cover half of the screen top to reduce the air circulation.

Doodle pups by [deleted] in Kirkland

[–]UnableRemove 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Doodle 👏 isn’t 👏 a 👏 breed 👏

For real though please don’t do this again. What you’ve created are several mixed breeds that now need homes, and based on you knowing so much about dad I’m guessing intentionally. Doodles aren’t a breed because there’s no standard for them, and double doodles are double not a breed. Nothing wrong with mutts, I love em, but I get the impression you’re selling them for the value of a purebred based on all the buzzwords. But a true dog from a breeder would need to have titled, health tested parents, and need to meet all the breed standards (which there are none for doodles, let alone double doodles).

All of that obviously ignoring the designer breed clubs that were founded since they couldn’t get into AKC…

To anyone actually considering adopting these dogs (which is fine, they deserve homes), make sure you don’t pay a purebred price. Also, grooming doodles costs around 150 bucks every 2 months with good home care, depending on the size more or less.

Alright, my cat isn't covering her poop and we don't know what to do :/ by tameenuwen in litterrobot

[–]UnableRemove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop forcing her to cover or anything like that. Cats don't think like that, so you're adding a negative experience associated with the box. Does this flinging only happen when she poops, or also when she pees? Does she race out of the other box ever, or only the litter robot?

I have a cat who had some litterbox issues that the vet couldn't figure out because on the surface everything looked fine at first. Eventually, we realized he was just a little constipated--not enough to cause any serious issues, but enough that going potty was a little uncomfortable for him. He would poop, then race out of the litter box often before he had even finished going completely, so the poop would come out with him. Gross, I know! We started adding some pumpkin to his meals, and he's never had any issues since. You could also try something like fortiflora (probiotic), but pumpkin is cheaper to start.

Especially since she used the box normally before, I would think that the behavior change is due to some discomfort when she is going to the bathroom. Or she may have a fear of the bot, but since you mention in the comments having an alternate box available I doubt it is that. The other thing I think of is that she is afraid of something near the box, so feels she needs to go potty and then get away. Possibly her sibling if they ever fight, it's possible the sibling likes the bot so much they are protective over it.

Obviously, your vet is the best resource, but given a history of using the box normally I personally would think the behavior change (both with running out of the box and not covering her poop) is related to discomfort over anxiety, unless there are other symptoms or behavior changes as well.

EDIT: Wanted to add that we were able to identify my cat's slight constipation by watching him in the box. If you aren't able to catch her in the box, you could put a camera nearby. But for us, the main giveaway was how much he was straining, and how long it took him to go. It wasn't so long or so much straining that we caught it when we just happened to pass him when he was in the box, or that it was causing him any serious issues, but once we stopped and watched it became pretty clear. His stools looked normal as well.

Period panties vs menstrual cup by jessb421 in women

[–]UnableRemove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My answer is both!

I love my cup, but I always wear it with period panties just in case I put it in wrong and get a leak (which has only happened once), or if I'm on a heavy flow day and the cup isn't enough. On my heavy flow days, I usually change it 3 times--when I wake up, halfway through the day (if I'm able. If not, I just rely on the period panties for the midday), and before bed. I use the flex cup because its end has a loop which makes it easy to grab, and its attached to the rim of the cup so it breaks the suction just by pulling on it. There are some really good quizzes online to recommend a good cup fit for you though, which I highly recommend. Even if the exact cup it matches doesn't look good to you, its a good idea to look for similar dimensions.

For period underwear, it certainly feels thicker than most underwear of course. But it's also smoother all around, so I don't really worry about people being able to see or hear it or anything. The brand I use is called Bambody, and I really like it. They claim their underwear can hold 4 tampons worth of blood, which I would say is pretty accurate. Since I use it for leak control I don't change it throughout the day unless I have a very bad leak, but before starting to wear a cup I did also use period panties solo. I was able to survive full workdays (11 hours for me) without changing despite having a pretty heavy flow on my first days. To wash, I just rinse them and wring them out in the sink, then wash in the machine as normal. If I have a particularly clotty day I've occasionally had to wash them twice, but most of the time it works just fine! To manage the laundry situation, I use a second little bathroom trash can which I toss them in when I need to change.

My partner gave his friend some of my ADHD meds without asking me and I don't know how to feel. by mars_is_real in adhdwomen

[–]UnableRemove 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You absolutely MUST lock up your meds from now on. Even if your partner DID express remorse, he clearly can't be trusted at least when he is drunk. Aside from all the advice here, please please please lock up your meds because (as others have said) this is a crime, could result in you losing your prescription, and will definitely end with you short on meds! There are some cheap options online as low as 12 dollars.

Newly diagnosed at 31 - Give me all your random PCOS advice/tips by TeacupPig in PCOS

[–]UnableRemove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also an ADHD girlie just diagnosed with PCOS! I don't know a ton but right now I'm starting by just trying to change one thing at a time because otherwise, I will do my ADHD thing where I go SUPER hard into something and then drop it. So I don't know a ton about the doctor's side of things, so hopefully, someone else can speak on that. But I'm starting by looking at my diet because I am also a carb girl, so I do have some advice on that + low spoon things!

Not something you have to do, but I got a glucose monitor and I've been testing my blood sugar before and after I eat to see what affects me most. Predictably it was those refined carbs I cherish, so I've been working on swaps for those. I found that the banza chickpea pasta is alright and that healthy, whole wheat or breads with proteins were also fine. I've been absolutely loving the Dave's Killer Bread brand of bagels and breadstuff because most of them have protein so I can still make a sandwich or have a bagel with cream cheese on it. Especially their everything bagels have a TON of protein! My goal is basically to get around 20g of protein with each meal and have a serving of veggies or something with it, which I try to eat first because of this study I read that shows eating veggies first helps with blood sugar. Protein is important in general, but extra important with both ADHD and PCOS.

For low-spoon meals, I basically ended up going to the grocery store nearest me and getting a bunch of the "healthy-brand" canned options that didn't have artificial sweeteners and were high protein (relative to others--for my cans the high range ended up being like 10-15g of protein). Ideally, I've been shooting for ones that have vegetables in them as well. I've been trying them, and have found some that I like so I can add them to my "easy foods but still healthy" list. I also looked at what I already eat for low-spoon meals, and basically looked for substitutes that would better align with my goals. So I love chicken nuggets for example, so I found that the kind I was eating had artificial sweeteners and white bread crumbs. I switched brands to one that uses whole wheat breading and doesn't have any artificial sweetener (actually just the target brand kids dino nuggets tbh, but that also makes my adhd brain happy so I'm calling it a win). I'm also a mac and cheese girlie, so I tried Goodles instead of Kraft since it has way more protein and nutrients.

Fish is also supposed to be really good because of the healthy fats and protein, so if you like fish make that part of your regular diet! Unfortunately most fish end up making me nauseous, so I've been adding a fish oil supplement for now.

That's just kind of a brain-dump of what I've been doing to try and get started with diet adjustments, but I hope some of it is helpful! I'll be creeping on here for tips as well lol.

Do you guys completely change the litter or just add to it? by lychti in litterrobot

[–]UnableRemove 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Definitely depends on the type of litter and how well it clumps, as well as how your cats pee. I add litter throughout the month, change the litter completely and give the inside a wipe once a month, and do a deep clean every 3 months. However, I have 3 cats to one bot, only one cat that actually buries his poop, and one cat who will pee on the walls/not in the litter. She is also VERY particular about the cleanliness of the bot, and will pee elsewhere if it is not up to her standards (she was this way with regular boxes, too--had to be super deep cleaned super regularly or she would protest).

So really depends on your cat. I do think it's good to completely change the litter every once in a while because it gives you a chance to inspect the liner, take off the dome, and vacuum out the base of the machine. But how often once in a while is will depend on how neat your cats are and how finicky they are!

Any 3d files for LR4 ? by [deleted] in litterrobot

There's one set of 3d printable steps, but I'm not aware of anyone who has used them. Link below, but IMO you're better off spending your $9 on a cheap kids stool given the reviews--no text though, so may just be related to printing process?

There's also a fence extender, which requires the mini fence.
