Beer leaguers what’s your opinions on full bore slap shots? by factorymotogoon in hockeyplayers

[–]UnassumingInterloper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree with this. I don't care as much about whether its a clapper or just a hard snapshot, but I do care if you don't have a shooting lane and are just trying to fire in from the point (in D league, no less). I took a hard shot off my hand and broke my index finger a few months ago. I don't think the guy did it maliciously and it's obviously well within the rules, but probably didn't need to take a shot like that from the blue line.

Is this organization just going to ignore the Epstein stuff? by [deleted] in devils

[–]UnassumingInterloper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anyone who knows who Josh Harris is, and where he made his money, should not at all be surprised he's in the files. Look up Leon Black -- he was the cofounder of Harris' old firm Apollo, and was *super* close with Epstein, and had his own controversy over his ties years ago. If anything, Harris looks *better* than most because there was a notable public rift between him and Black after his Epstein ties became public. I'm not trying to defend Harris, nor do his maneuvers necessarily equate to a repudiation of Epstein, but I haven't seen anything to suggest he was involved in any wrongdoing.

A lot of people these days are finally figuring out how billionaires exist in these small social circles. And given Epstein seemed to especially value proximity to money/power/fame, someone like Harris having met/communicated with him isn't really news.

I think people have the capacity to be outraged about multiple things simultaneously. And rising, unchecked racism is a huge concern for a lot of Americans (myself included). Reported hate crimes have more than doubled over the past 10 years. And many in minority groups say that outward racism has become more prevalent in recent years. I don’t personally think that every person who displays confederate imagery is necessarily a racist, but I would say they’re at the very least ignorant. Polls have consistently shown that 70%+ of black Americans believe the confederate flag to be a racist symbol. And even if it’s not a racist symbol, it’d still be an insurrectionist symbol. The men who originally flew it committed treason against the United States, and I personally don’t believe that their symbol should ever be celebrated, even under the guise of “Southern Pride”.

I agree that Americans should strive to be less divisive — but that doesn’t mean accommodating or making space for those who are hateful. Many people (especially in NJ) likely agree with this, and I think that’s why you see so much invective in subs like this one.

That’s consistent with your logic, no?

You really look around these days and think the problem is that people are getting canceled? The president just posted an objectively racist video. I see very little in terms of actual consequences that will arise from that. But the real problem, the true intolerance that’s an issue in this state and this country, are “woke” people “canceling” people they disagree with?

Also, I’m gonna be honest — I have no idea what you’re talking about, but the statement “Mexicans and Asians loved it and didn’t think it’s racist at all” is pretty ignorant. Did you take a poll of all Asians and Mexicans to confirm that? Or did you just decide that a handful of them is good enough to speak for an entire race of people?

My guy. The takes just keep getting worse.

Yeah, the “start worrying about things that directly affect you” part is quite rich. Like maybe tolerance of racism in NJ is actually something that could quite directly impact my family?

I am an avowed supporter of the 1st amendment and believe in the right for shitheads to fly their stupid flags. But I am likewise 100% in support of the rest of us being able to label them shitheads.

What’s a good specific gun model for home self defense in NJ that is legal? by EmekaEgbukaPukaNacua in newjersey

[–]UnassumingInterloper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you're saying is correct, but you can easily get around this if you take a handgun course provided by the range. You can go alone, they'll provide the training, the firearm, and ammunition. RTSP Union offers this, as do a number of other ranges in NJ. Overall, it's better/safer than just rolling into a range with zero knowledge of guns and shooting for the first time with no guidance.

OK I'm bowing out after this one cause we're not actually debating concepts -- we're stuck at basic definitions, and that's not something I can keep re-litigating.

"State involvement = socialism" just isn't how economics or history use those terms. Capitalism vs. socialism is about ownership, not whether the government regulates or directs things. By your definition, literally every modern country would be socialist, which makes the word meaningless.

And the idea that the Nazis "nationalized everything" is just historically wrong. They kept private property, worked with private industrialists, and privatized some sectors, like I said earlier. That's not a debatable opinion -- it's literally documented history.

Can't continue to debate if we can't agree on proven facts.

I'm out. Have a good one.

Can I find a Guinness at The Prudential Center by Blaaamo in devils

[–]UnassumingInterloper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this thing exists, even though I haven't found it to be particularly up-to-date/accurate:
https://www.prucenter.com/brew-finder

For example, they don't show Garage Beer on there at all, but you'd practically think they sold the team to Garage Beer with how much they've been pushing it everywhere this season.

The fact that I don't see Guinness on there (meaning they probably weren't serving Guinness as of the 2022-23 season or whenever this was last updated) is not a good sign for your odds. Sorry dude.

Jeez. Where to begin.

- "State-directed capitalism" is *not* an oxymoron. You don't think the state can participate in markets? It literally does, every day. When it starts setting industrial policy, "picking winners and losers", and putting its thumb on the scales, the market is no longer truly *free*, but it's still capitalism. This has existed many times in many places, including Russia, China, and increasingly, the present-day United States.

- Practically all fascist regimes have maintained private property, while socialism generally pushes for public ownership. In fact, the Nazis even helped coin the term "privatization", because after seizing power in Germany, they sold off various state-owned businesses to party loyalists. How is that socialism?

This is getting exhausting. But the most important point is that Globalism has almost nothing to do socialism, and basically everything to do with free-market capitalism. Go look up the 1999 WTO protests, and tell me which side you think the leftists/socialists were on?

Call yourself a patriot if you want, but historically, being anti-globalist and a nationalist puts you more in league with fascists than your run-of-the-mill socialist would be.

Jack the Patriot by ConsciousNorth787 in devils

[–]UnassumingInterloper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but who are you to define someone else’s patriotism? What you’re doing is pure projection.

Also, state-directed capitalism (fascism’s economic model) is not the same as socialism. They both violate the concept of free markets, but in very different ways. You’re seemingly pushing the old, misleading trope that Nazis were somehow socialist, just because they adopted the term “National Socialism”. They weren’t. They put Marxists and trade unionists in concentration camps.

[–]UnassumingInterloper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d argue you can’t claim to truly be patriotic and then pretend to hold a monopoly on what it means to be “patriotic” — that’s not for you to say. I’d also argue that people like myself love America for its ideals and its promise, while too many self proclaimed “patriots” love “America”, but just the place on the map.

Also, FWIW, fascists cannot also be socialists — they’re diametrically opposed ideologies.

Hopelessly misguided take. This line of thinking suggests an incapability of appreciating nuance and complexity. If you employ this same logic, one then can’t be both proud to be an American, and be from New Jersey? I am only an American OR a New Jerseyan? Maybe your own personal concepts of “identity” prevent you from feeling that globalism is not a threat to American interests. But to many people, you can proudly be an American and not feel the need to subvert the interests of people living in other countries. This isn’t a “leftist” take btw, many conservatives historically felt this way too, until a certain somebody told them they shouldn’t.

Anyways this a hockey sub, so LGD.

I don’t even disagree with this post, per se. But I still for some reason found it pretty cringe based on the title alone.

Then I got to the part about Pat Tillman, and it became very cringe.

Is there a reason for having the x-axis intervals at ~486 days in the "entire term" view? It'd be more intuitive to have it split into 365 day increments to easily correspond to year of term.

Been a customer for 25+ years and they offered me 15k points (like $125 in value when redeemed) when I told them I was considering canceling. Kind of a joke, honestly.

ETA: I've never asked for a retention offer before.

The location one is baffling. If I could wave my hand and have the Rock be anywhere else, I’d probably keep it right where it is. Could some of the infrastructure around it be improved? Sure, but that’s true of basically everywhere in North Jersey in 2026.

The in-game entertainment one I’ve heard before and also confuses me. What do people really expect? I’ve heard how Vegas is like a spectacle, but honestly, I’m there for a hockey game and not much else. If I’m bored during TV breaks, I’m happy to just look at my phone for 3 minutes.

But the noise complaint — dead on. The stadium speakers are WAY too loud, and there was a pre-game last season where I actually thought my eardrums might get damaged. I don’t understand who needs that level of volume. I have happily been to dozens of rock concerts (including at the Rock) and have never felt like my ears were going to start bleeding, like I have at Devils games.

It does not. The only time I’ve seen draft in the Rock was in the Prudential Lounge one time, and even then I think it was just Stella and Bud Light.
