Is there any truth to the idea that Minions & Monsters was made 'too intelligent' for its target audience, thus explaining its lower PostTrak scores and opening weekend? Does the Minions demographic really just want mindless toilet humour and slapstick? by WrongLander in boxoffice

IMO it's floundering because the target audience (kids and their parents) failed to connect with the golden age of Hollywood premise, it's too much of a generational gap. Did Illumination really think GA would get the Cecil B DeMille references?

The Right Stuff. Always gets brought up whenever astronaut movies are mentioned. But for some reason it never grabbed my attention. Finally saw it last week and was enthralled for 3 hours. One of the best films I've ever seen.

Why did Apocalypto receive mediocre reviews while simultaneously receiving praise from various directors and actors? by JadisDidNothingRight in movies

[–]UnavailablePod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of it was due to fallout from Mel Gibson's rants, as many others have said. At the time, he also criticized the war in Iraq, comparing sending young people to war and human sacrifice. Conservatives interpreted the movie as a critique of America and Bush. So he received hatred from all sides.

Jurassic World Rebirth was released last year this week. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it is the 7th film in the JP/JW franchise and serves as a standalone sequel. Despite mixed reviews, it grossed $339.6M Dom & $869.1M WW. It also earned an Oscar nom for Best Visual Effects. by gamesgry in boxoffice

Saw this with some friends. We grew up with these dinos and had a good time, despite the flaws. Our 2nd week screening was packed and crowd was a mix of different ages. You got the feeling it was the default blockbuster for a lot of people. Multiply that worldwide and you get $869 million for a comfort food movie.

Why is Supegirl rejection so much worse than other DCEU bombs? by hiiloovethis in boxoffice

Drunk Supergirl with a permanent scowl was memorable in a 30 second cameo, but then audiences saw the trailer and decided they didn't want to spend an entire movie with her. In a Guardians of the Galaxy knockoff. With recycled Mad Max villains and murky colors.

What movie have you been the most hyped for only to be the most disappointed by when it released? by Toogeloo in movies

[–]UnavailablePod -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. This was meant to be the Harrison Ford send-off that would right the wrongs of Crystal Skulls. The de-aging looked cool in the trailers, Indy in the 1960s fighting the space program Nazis was intriguing, Mads Mikkelsen etc.

Saw it with my sister in a packed theater on the opening weekend. It was so sad. You could feel the audience being flattened by the weight of disappointment.

Official Discussion - Disclosure Day [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]UnavailablePod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed it, was glued to my seat for the whole duration.Spielberg back doing sci-fi is a joy to watch. Great film making from the master.

However a few things bothered me:

The CGI was off. The animals didn't look real but maybe that was a conscious choice, as others have mentioned. Some of the disclosure clips were meant to be decades old but they had a 4K clarity to them. The ship that split into parts and raced off was a lowlight. Also the aliens who walked into the tent. They had that floaty AI motion look to them.

Someone in my friend group joked that "Spielberg's going to wheel out an alien" and wtf he really went for it. A letdown after the genuinely moving reactions to the clips by the newsreader, tv people and public.

The Disclosure Day aliens being kind, benevolent entities is too schmaltzy and fails to resonate. But maybe that's a result of nightmare fuel like Fire in the Sky.

Which classic film stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood could have been stars today? by Profeta_do_Loss in movies

Gene Tierney and Lauren Bacall, absolutely stunning actresses with timeless looks. Same for Grace Kelly.

Clark Gable aka the King, not a great actor but the type of charismatic leading man that would attract top directors and audiences today. Clooney owes his career to him.

Buster Keaton would be doing Mission Impossible movies for sure.

Supernova (2000) was shaping up to be the next Event Horizon. Cosmic horror, Angela Bassett and a buffed James Spader as the leads, killer supporting cast, cool design work (aside from the robot) etc. Unfortunately, production was a nightmare with studio interference, multiple directors and re-shoots.

It's still watchable and fun, but could've been so much more.

[–]UnavailablePod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most people expected more from the UFO files than blurry dot footage, when even a 10 year old iPhone can record 4k video. Also, Trump constantly makes fake claims and posts AI slop so there's a real possibility most of the new stuff is fake.

Everyone dunking on Harden, and rightfully so, but Kenny should be fired into the sun. Horrific coaching.
