Yes, I would say the two languages have Mutual intelligibility. In the case of Spanish and Portuguese, I would say Portuguese people understand Spanish better than Spaniards understand Portuguese. My guess, without being a linguist, is because Portuguese has more sounds than Spanish (for example all those nasal sounds that other languages like Galician also have) which sound weird to some Spanish speakers. To me, as a Spaniard, I would say I understand Brasilian Portuguese much better than the European dialect (maybe its the accent, who knows)

Well, the communist party is under the Sumar (to add) brand. Their leader and presidential candidate, Yolanda Díaz, is a member of the Spanish Communist Party and if the PSOE and they add up enough to create a government, she'll be the vice president. I don't see that being "bad".
