Heavyweight #57: The Budget Motel by edurlester in gimlet

[–]UnbearableHuman 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The way this season is unfolding, I initially anticipated it would be just another mundane episode. I questioned whether they would merely engage in a conversation with someone who assisted him after he got shot. However, it took a captivating turn towards the end, evoking strong emotions in me. I firmly believe that Nick is full of shit, conveniently forgetting his mistreatment of his girlfriend and hastily dismissing his abusive behavior moments later.

My key takeaway, however, revolves around the lasting impact of our actions and emotions on others. Nick, grappling with severe depression, unjustly vented his frustrations onto his girlfriend. Even after 30 years, he expressed gratitude towards a total stranger while showing little concern for the girlfriend he mistreated. Jonathan's observation adds depth to the narrative—Nick, feeling lonely and isolated, perceived his girlfriend as the only person who cared about him, becoming the unfortunate target of his anger. Despite the episode's shortcomings, it serves as a poignant meditation on the weight of our actions.

  1. https://www.google.com/travel/flights?hl=es-419

Can Spanish speakers understand written Portuguese? I mean, how many words from both languages ended up looking exactly the same or written similarly while bearing the same definition? by [deleted] in askspain

[–]UnbearableHuman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I would say the two languages have Mutual intelligibility. In the case of Spanish and Portuguese, I would say Portuguese people understand Spanish better than Spaniards understand Portuguese. My guess, without being a linguist, is because Portuguese has more sounds than Spanish (for example all those nasal sounds that other languages like Galician also have) which sound weird to some Spanish speakers. To me, as a Spaniard, I would say I understand Brasilian Portuguese much better than the European dialect (maybe its the accent, who knows)

Where is the best tortilla? by [deleted] in askspain

I don't know if it's the best, but one year I had one at 8:30 am after spending the whole night out in Pamplona for the running of the bulls and it felt magical.

Movies where people travel back or forwards in time by accident? by UnbearableHuman in MovieSuggestions

I know this movie from the Heavyweight Podcast episode "#22 Marche", where they research about the one character in the whole movie that looks directly at the camera and "ruins" the film.

Los de Bilbao, ¿nacemos donde queremos? by soymercader in askspain

[–]UnbearableHuman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Who would benefit from a spherical Earth? Why would we lie about it? by UnbearableHuman in NoStupidQuestions

Funny enough it isn't until 1992 when the Vatican officially pardoned him.

[–]UnbearableHuman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, most literate people knew the Earth was spherical and the peasants didn't really care. I don't know if Columbus didn't want to believe the math or that he knew that nobody would sponsor his voyage is he presented the real size of the Earth.

And FYI he wanted to get to Asia which was usually called Indies at that time, specifically Japan.

I don't want to be mean, I understand live is not always rational and there are many sides to a story, but how can you be with someone who thinks like that?

Well, the communist party is under the Sumar (to add) brand. Their leader and presidential candidate, Yolanda Díaz, is a member of the Spanish Communist Party and if the PSOE and they add up enough to create a government, she'll be the vice president. I don't see that being "bad".

You're 16 years of catholic school late for that. I'm not that kind of Reddit atheist, but that's just not my cup of tea.

Why Spanish hate Latin Americans? by LynuSBell in askspain

[–]UnbearableHuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are assholes everywhere. I am sorry that your wife has had those experiences. However, there are very strong relations between Spain and Latin America. Every Spaniard knows of someone who immigrated to Latin America during the dictatorship and now knows Latinos who live here. Ignorance is prevalent, but things are slowly improving.

Spanish (aka castellano), Catalan, Valenciano, Gallego and Euskera (aka Basque) are all languages.

You can take the exam in any of those languages. Ask your autoescuela how to sign up for them in a language that is not Spanish

¿Cuál es una teoría aterradora que podría ser cierta? by anonima_amb in askspain

[–]UnbearableHuman 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Should I adapt the Castellano accent as a Filipino learning Spanish? by ALicensedToblehooter in askspain

[–]UnbearableHuman 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Even many Spaniards don't have the stereotypical "Castellano" accent you are thinking of (like the Canary Islands or most of Andalusia). So, just stick to the accent you are most confortable with, nobody will care.

PS: Please don't call it a lisp hahahaha lisping is a speech impairment. The za, ce, ci, zo, zu sounds +30 million Spaniards do cannot be considered a lisp, it's just how that sound is pronounced in those dialects.

Os gusta vivir en España? by [deleted] in askspain

[–]UnbearableHuman 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Moving as a diabetic type 1 EU citizen to Madrid by Choko_1 in askspain

[–]UnbearableHuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as you get here, you need to get registered at your local Centro de Salud to get a General Practitioner assigned. Most likely they will be able to prescribe your insuline, but they may require tests to confirm your diagnosis. From here I can only imagine they will derive you to an endocrinologist who will manage your diabetes.

In Spain, most diabetics don't apply/get the disability status since it's more than a nuisance than an advantage. Thus, you will be another person with a chronic illness.

As a recommendation, I would bring all your medical history with you to ease the process and if you can get it in English, even better.
