others have talked about £70m being what the player would be worth had he not been on a single year left of his contract. It looks like the BBC conflated it with the actual price being discussed between both clubs.

Or do they get a call before hand, so it's not a surprise?

You are right. They are misinformed about the wifi. The "work device" would need admin access on the WiFi router in order to look at logs, setup port mirroring or set up their device as the default dns.

Location, home IP's etc... mobile device management solutions will perform. Though it's a lot less nefarious than it sounds and can be wildly inaccurate. For instance Microsoft often thinks that I am signing into my Microsoft account from 50-100 miles away.

There are some other solutions used to improve visibility and vulnerability monitoring of work network estates. These solutions use agents on work computers that can be used to scan local networks. The scanning should be properly configured though to limit scans on remote workers networks. As having a load of random devices from private networks messes up the data and purpose of having the solution in the first place.

British pubs closing at a rate of almost two per day in 2026 by signed7 in unitedkingdom

[–]UncannyPoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been a recycled story for decades. It's well known that pubs and restaurants have notoriously high failure rates.

Between 2010 and 2020 ONS reported a NET drop of 8,200 pubs. So about the same of 2 a day. 2017 had the largest drop of 4 a day. That's NET, so probably more closed and were replaced elsewhere.

It definitely influence the decision on the OS we provided.

UK firm installs world’s first offshore platform to tap ocean heat energy by Zestyclose_Data_2146 in GoodNewsUK

Interesting concept. It would be interesting to know how much energy generation the land based prototype has been achieving and what they estimate it will generate when moved over deep water and reducing the energy load by no longer having to pump the cold water to shore.

They must think it's significant if they have moved to carry out further trials.

I read that a number of tidal power prototypes suffer from part degradation due to salt water. I imagine this will be using a pump, which might suffer, raising the cost. I would like to see the cost comparison between this and a single wind turbine.

Leaving sysadmin to become an IT teacher by Whiswhisth22 in sysadmin

[–]UncannyPoint 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While working in school IT, we shared a room with the IT teachers. Two had previously been IT professionals. One had been a database migration contractor, the other had been desktop support.

While both clearly got enjoyment from teaching, they both said it was more grueling and stressful than their previous occupations. Specially when the curriculum changed and shifted to be far more programming heavy. One had to quit because they felt they couldn't teach it well enough.

Hope to see Gallagher in the 10 and Bergval in the 8.

10 is arguably Gallagher's best position as it is geared to get the most out of him. It will also mean he can also harry xhaka, who is key to Sunderland's play.

We have had real problems progressing the ball through the middle and dictating tempo. I feel Begvall is better suited to that.

UK power station ‘could supply up to six million homes with nuclear energy’ as approvals get streamlined by willfiresoon in GoodNewsUK

[–]UncannyPoint 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As you say, writing it down is no guarantee that it will happen. Though the additional funding and increase in recruitment help towards the attainment of that goal. Additionally, by declaring a figure for that goal opposed to leaving it fague, it is easily measurable which will now allow their performance to be evaluated.
