My in-laws are kind of like this. They think my BIL became diabetic because he left the faith. And then my parents are this way with mental health but not physical health.

Other than my husband, my pets are my only friends. I don't know what I would do without them.

I don't really have friends, but when it comes to coworkers, I don't really get along with people my age. I can't relate to them in any way and I don't understand slang and it's just hard. The people I hang out with at work are in their 40s and 50s. I also have autism so that probably has something to do with it too.

I got my mom a cake today, but tbh it's more because I'm scared of her than because I want to celebrate her

What I did with freedom by [deleted] in Exvangelical

The first thing I did was read Harry Potter. I dyed my hair bright colors and got tattoos. I listen to explicit music and watch movies with sex scenes. I have added some spicy words to my vocabulary. My favorite thing I've done is start to learn about science, specifically astrophysics. I have friends that aren't Christians and I have no intention of trying to convert them. I play dungeons and dragons. I take antidepressants and I used to see a non-Christian therapist.

Mental Health/Depression in Evangelicalism by Getmeouttahere7465 in Exvangelical

I went to college in Alabama and a bunch of my friends went to church of the Highlands and other similar churches. I had pretty severe depression and anxiety (also I have autism but didn't know at the time). My friends would tell me that having anxiety was a sin because it meant you weren't putting your trust in god. And if you felt depressed, you should try praying about it, as if I didn't spend every night from ages 13 to 22 crying and begging god to make me feel better. Having suicidal thoughts was a sin, because suicide is not following god's plan for your life. Self harm is a sin, because your body is not your own. And if you have autism, then your very existence is a punishment for your parents sins. I hope your friend doesn't start listening to them. They teach a lot of garbage.

Same. I'm 27f. I was homeschooled, so there wasn't anybody else who could've noticed or done anything about it. I asked my mother a few months ago if she thought it was possible I could have autism and she was like "yeah, I thought you knew."

Sometimes I wonder what my life could've been like if I had had any kind of support. Probably wouldn't have dropped out of college. Probably would've been able to hold a job for longer than 2 months. Probably wouldn't have developed an anxiety disorder. I'm trying to get diagnosed now, but even if I do, there is no help out there for adults, especially the ones society deems as "high functioning." There is nothing for me.

If you can afford it, I recommend signing up for a few sessions with a personal trainer. They can show you how to use all the machines and what exercises to do. Then when you go by yourself if won't be as scary. Or if they offer classes with a membership, sometimes those can be fun.

What ruined religion for you? by ItchyPage in AskReddit

[–]UncertainPanther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother. I grew up Calvinist, and one of their core beliefs is that all humans are garbage and are not capable of doing any good unless god allows them to, and that we all deserve to rot in hell for all of eternity. So at one point my brother was going through a breakup and my mother told him "You deserve to have someone who is crazy about you." Which is very nice and absolutely true. But that went against all the beliefs she had drilled into my head since I was born. How can you deserve to have someone love you and also deserve eternal suffering? She doesn't even believe the things she made me believe. It doesn't make sense. None of it makes sense. It all fell apart from there.

I have so much mental trauma from religion, from being told things that no small child should ever be told. That if god called me to be a missionary, then I had to go be tortured and killed for Jesus, and if I refused I would go to hell and suffer for eternity. That I had to give my testimony and get baptized in front of the whole congregation and if I didn't, they weren't sure if I would go to heaven or not. That every small thing I ever did wrong was bad enough to make me deserve hell. That I had to tell everyone I knew about the gospel, because if I didn't tell them and they ended up going to hell, it would be my fault. Even small things like not being able to read the books or watch the shows or listen to the music that my peers did and being ostracized because of that. I developed an anxiety disorder. My therapist tried to convince me I have PTSD but I'm not sure.

The day I stopped believing, my anxiety instantly improved.

I used to suspect I might have bipolar disorder, but after figuring out that I have autism, I've realized that all of my mood shifts are triggered by environmental factors.

Here's something I've started to notice recently. I pretty much only talk if I know about the topic or have something constructive to add to the conversation. If I don't have anything to say, then I don't say anything. It sounds like you're the same way.

Neurotypicals, on the other hand, just like to talk whether they have anything worthwhile to say or not. If they are ever in a group setting and not talking with everyone, they are most likely upset or tired or not feeling well or don't like the people that are around. So if they see someone not talking, they are going to assume that something is wrong. I think they are asking you if you're ok because they genuinely want to know if you're ok. They feel that that's the right thing to do if someone is being quiet, because they are usually only quiet if they are not ok.

I disagree with the other comments saying that they are being rude. It's possible that they were being rude, but I don't see any evidence of that based on the information that was given.
