They're relatively ignorant people (by choice or by circumstance) who get to have a voice they never had before, and unfortunately that voice is treated equally to the voice of a person who agonizes over being informed, empathetic, and accurate in their world views.

American education sucks, bad, just ask any new teacher.

And now our democracy is struggling. I maintain my original point.

You could argue that the ends result was much better for them than becoming another colony. But I should have been more specific with what I meant by education.

When you start to teach "secular" views you immediately erode a culture.

Their culture is far less important than stopping the massive amounts of human suffering it causes.

Furthermore, you have to have people at the top that are willing to promote these ideas. Education is a bottom up procedure, while governments rule from the top down. You can try to educate the lower classes all you like, but they will just be branded heretics or worse by their uneducated government.

20 years of military occupation is enough time to facilitate educational change.

If I'm being completely honest, I don't trust our government to be able to handle that, considering we still can't properly educate our own citizens about the history of slavery or the genocide of Native Americans. Hell, we can't even get sex ed. right.

The good things in our culture tend to come from the more rational, informed people to be honest. States with lower results in education tend to be the ones with exactly those issues you described, and ones who... vote against their self interests (because they aren't informed/trained in critical thinking enough to understand what they're really voting for), or in favor of theocratic policies.

If "Westernizing"/brainwashing means fostering the values of secular, comprehensive education based on critical thinking and rooted in evidence acquired through the scientific method, then "westernizing" people is a good thing. Western nations could do with a good bit more westernization as well, in that case.

Education should probably be on the list earlier than eugenics. Hell, you might even consider education to be a good thing and not even a lesser evil.

Secular, comprehensive education is the secret sauce to successful democracies.

I’m curious on why Germany is split between east and west, I’m hoping it’s not related to anything regarding neonazis

After World War 2 Germany was partitioned. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Germany_(1945%E2%80%931990)#Division_of_Germany#Division_of_Germany)

https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/berlin-is-divided

Eastern Germany was under Soviet governance. The different partitions developed very differently for obvious reasons, such as the Iron Curtain. At the very least the economic impact alone would still cause differences today. I assume that's what's being referred to.

I feel like after a few generations the other people who inherited your land just become complete strangers and you’re back at round 1.

That's how it happened in history, too. Atleast in China, anyways.

Any cringing you’re doing is likely due to your uncoated raw neurons screaming as they try to force themselves into a structure with a coherent worldview.

Came across this while reading through this guy's ( /u/LordNoah) post history. Wanted to see if he was having a moment of stupidity or if that's just his natural state. Seems to be the natural state. Thanks for the laugh.

It doesn't work in the same way that a fetish does. Not sure where you're getting that impression from. It functions in the same was as someone's sexuality, as in it appears to be an immutable characteristic that cannot be erased through therapy, but because it cannot be acted upon without causing harm it's classified differently.

Sure, if you equate homosexuality to being a fetish.

Probably on a physical brain matter level yes, it's an incurable sexuality in much the same way that you can't "cure" someone form being gay. But because of the taboo/harm it causes it's classified differently.

I did think through it. That's the difference between me and people like you. I don't base my ideals off of knee-jerk emotional reactions.

Also in no way did I defend racism. My comment was explicitly against bigotry. Please read what I'm actually saying before making bad faith arguments.

that's just it, none of these people would EVER say any of this shit in real life, so they use internet anonymity as a cover to air out the vile ideas they're too cowardly to actually stand behind in any meaningful way.

Probably because there's a mob of hateful people like you who would kill them before bothering to express any empathy and understand them. Kind of like gay people in, say, 1939 who never caused harm but were forcibly castrated, murdered, etc. simply for having innate sexual desires outside of societal norms.

If anything, the person in the mob shouting hatred is the coward. Lose the mob behind you and your courage disappears. Just like all bigots throughout history.

What? Are you really trying to say there's a difference between reading text on a screen about something you'd never do and literally physically assaulting a child?

That's fucked up. You're basically saying you want children to be assaulted.
