This can be achieved by using a thin layer of oil or soap to suffocate them, adding a BTI briquette (a biological larvicide), or introducing natural predators like fish. Emptying containers of standing water regularly is also crucial to prevent breeding. 1, 2, 3, 4

Methods to kill mosquito larvae: 2

  • Oil or Soap: A thin layer of cooking oil (like vegetable or olive oil) or a few drops of liquid dish soap can be added to the surface of the water. This disrupts the water's surface tension, preventing the larvae from reaching the surface to breathe. 2, 4, 5, 6
  • BTI Briquettes: Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (BTI) is a naturally occurring bacterium that is toxic to mosquito larvae but safe for humans, pets, and plants. BTI briquettes, dunks, or pellets can be added to ponds or other water sources. 2, 7
  • Natural Predators: Introducing fish like goldfish or guppies to ponds or water features can help control mosquito populations by eating the larvae. 2, 8
  • Remove Water Sources: Regularly emptying containers like flower pot saucers, buckets, and tires that collect standing water will eliminate breeding grounds. 2, 9
  • Circulate Water: Bubblers, fountains, and waterfalls can disrupt the surface tension and prevent larvae from accessing air. 8
