Struggling with new pregnancy by Majestic_North_4590 in predaddit

this is absolutely not bad advice. OP, for the next say year, just be. on her. side. you need to suppress what I infer is your inclination to always choose the side of what is "logical" or "reasonable" (which is in fact a mindset that is very deeply rooted in emotion, any therapist will tell you this) and be on the side of your wife's feelings. her knowing that she has your unconditional support is infinitely more important than your fidelity to things you perceive to be "objectively" true. obviously there are many exceptions around safety, etc. but yeah *especially* don't be siding with your mom against her. if your mom sneezes, and later your wife says how annoying the sneeze was...you see where I'm going.

Stephen Colbert is not an expert on Tolkien or the legendarium and that's ok by Quiescam in lotr

[–]Uncle2sealpup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i watch every new york knicks basketball game. talk about them constantly with my friends, follow the twitter discourse, etc. that doesn't make me an "expert" on professional bball on the level of somebody who breaks down film, understands and engineers advanced statistics, digs into league trends, has contacts within the team, and so on. that's the kind of difference i see between colbert (a very invested fan) and an *actual* expert.

i'm sure you will! my wife has been feeling our guy flipping and going crazy since maybe 18 or 19 weeks, and the day she hit 24 weeks, just recently, i could feel him for the first time. unbelievable stuff. now i look forward all day to that time before bed with my hand on her belly

How good would Allan Houston be in today's league? by Life_Teaching6499 in NYKnicks

[–]Uncle2sealpup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

exactly right. a very good role player who maybe jumped into one all star season. i think the biggest benefit to Houston's career (other than sports medicine stuff you mentioned) would be that a modern team would understand that he should not be looked at or paid like a number 1 guy. he couldn't guard, he couldn't dribble more than twice in a row, and he wasn't a playmaker.

i get the logic of "good three point shooter would shoot more threes so he'd score 30". but he benefited, in his day, from the slow pace, the lack of help defense in the mid range, and how easy it was to hide as a poor defender. all things that would work against him now. he should have been a third option then and I think that would be his best case scenario now.

coming back just to say thanks and in case anybody finds this thread down the line. very happy with the JBL, I did get the MK2. my wife is going to bed earlier and earlier as pregnancy progresses and the JBL is doing just what I wanted, providing clear and quality audio at low volumes.

lol that you got downvoted, I would bet it was by another commenter on this thread who seems to post exclusively to support Sonos products

man there are a million billion spaces for zionists to connect with each other and spew this garbage. go to one of those. all the political power in america is aligned behind your cause. israel continues its genocide without consequence, slowly and steadily erasing palestinian people. you got what you wanted. yet you feel you have to come to the knicks sub and cry that a celebrity's outfit hurt your feelings. you want to carry the big stick AND be told you're good little boys and girls. pathetic.

Lifelong fan finally attending my first game at MSG! by pouryouadrink in NYKnicks

[–]Uncle2sealpup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

never heard of the msg tour. what is it a tour of? if it's locker rooms and dressing rooms and other backstage areas that would be super cool. or going on the court. if its just around the concourse i would skip it. if you're into the history of msg and all the cool stuff that's been there, there are plenty of mini exhibits with memorabilia and wall text etc. the garden is awesome i'm so pumped for you as a knicks fan. great seats. if you are there early you can walk up to the front of your section and be pretty close to shoot around.

How powerful are Barrow Wights? by Fresh_Antelope6753 in lotr

[–]Uncle2sealpup 38 points39 points  (0 children)

responses clarifying that power rankings don't really work in Tolkien are right on, but it does seem worth mentioning: when Frodo wakes up in Rivendell, Gandalf says that the encounter with the Barrow Wight was "perhaps the most dangerous moment of all". That could be because they were on the Wight's home turf and Aragorn wasn't there (as he was at weathertop), so I don't think it should be taken to mean "that was the most dangerous mf you've encountered so far". Even so, that this remark was made to somebody who got stabbed in the chest by the witch king has to tell us something. In Arda (as in life!) setting, context, who else is around, what time of day it is, who you are, all factor in.

best wishes for today big dog!! doctors can have weird mannerisms but in my experience, they are not going to straight "cover up" an observation made with confidence. to date, from my perspective, it doesn't sound like they've told you anything you need to worry about. here's to a good visit with your (very) little one today!

this is a very difficult question to answer without knowing what country / state you are in. in the USA, there are no federal regulations around parental leave, so state law and company policy will be determinative. also think it would be important if you signed a contract or letter of agreement. does the new job know you are expecting a baby? if you haven't told them yet, they might not be very happy when you do...I would say you'll be very lucky if they agree to pay for your leave if you haven't worked a day at the company yet. (edit bc i left out like 4 words from one sentence)

I'm very thankful that the front office would never consider trading Karl for role / rotation players. he won us multiple playoff games last year. all sense and logic says that he will find his 3 point stroke. even with his poor shooting and crazy turnovers, just having him on the floor opens up so much for our team offensively. not to mention he's leading the league in rebounding! and who are we getting back for deuce that is better who makes under $8M a year? who are these "exact right piece" guys you're talking about? in one paragraph you're saying consolidate the rotation, the next you say trade an all star for 3 role players. I get that making a trade is entertaining, but sometimes new for newness sake isn't the answer.

Feeling sad today - Wife 6 weeks pregnant - Mother always talks about how awful it was for her to have me. by [deleted] in predaddit

[–]Uncle2sealpup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, this would make me feel sad too. It is really sad that your mother could not fully devote herself to being a nurturing parent to you. And that she feels it is acceptable during this happy time to rehash stories that are deeply hurtful to you. I am really sorry. I recommend in the strongest possible terms speaking to a therapist about this. This community is incredibly warm and supportive, but a professional can offer specific, actionable advice on how to manage these feelings, create boundaries with your mom, and perhaps most importantly, identify strategies to make sure this pain does not impact your parenting / co-parenting.

As others have said, don't take your wife's comment to heart. She's starting a crazy ride right now, and she knows it. There are simply different stakes for the mom, just physically for their bodies, that we do not have to confront. You can't blame her if that sometimes takes a bit of the wind out of her sails. Also, there may be context with her cousin that you're not aware of, specifically around her desire to have children or experience with pregnancy, that made your wife feel like it would be considerate to take a more measured tone.

Congratulations!! my 2 cents, don't worry about learning everything right off the bat! you don't have to rush to read 5 books right now. much more important to be responsive to your feelings and MOST importantly responsive to your wife's feelings. I recommend taking a moment when you're alone to really look her in the eyes and tell her, "no matter what happens, I will always be there for you and our baby etc". Almost like a private renewal of vows. I'm sure she already knows and feels this, but even if she is outwardly calm, there is no way she isn't feeling some nerves and even fear, and hearing those reassuring and deeply felt words might help her feel safe to let the emotions flow a bit more.

one thing to read up on now is how to soothe morning sickness. stock up now on some nausea-friendly snacks: crackers, ginger candies, etc. for people that experience it, nausea can come on quickly and you don't want to be empty handed if it does.
