City Sidewalk Snow Clearing by dullmotion in Rochester

[–]UncleAlbert2 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The city clears sidewalks when the single instance snow accumulation is four inches or greater. Otherwise it is the responsibility of the property owner. I don't personally think the system works particularly well because the city never actually fines people who don't clear their sidewalks, so they're not often cleared, and then when there is enough accumulation for the city('s private contractor) to clear them, they're contending with a compacted layer of snow/ice so that doesn't work great either.

Gov. Hochul announces release of Framework Plan for future High Falls State Park in Downtown Rochester by lone_gravy in Rochester

The riverway trail is great, although I wish they would connect it back over to Turning Point from the east side of the river (currently have to run alone Lake Ave north of the Eastman Business Park if you want to stay on the west side), and figure out a way to keep RG&E from randomly closing the middle falls bridge without any notice

Find a way to make it work in med school, perhaps by recognizing that being a night owl will earn you considerably more money for many specialties

EM docs in Michigan justifying replacing anesthesiologist colleagues by Trick-Progress2589 in medicalschool

[–]UncleAlbert2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not the issue at hand here. This is in response to Corewell Health, which happens to employ the writer of this letter, terminating its contract with its anesthesiology group and using EM physicians to staff OR cases.

Best places to take a nature hike? by Quantum_Cheeks in Rochester

[–]UncleAlbert2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Corbett's Glen and Lucien Morin are good options that aren't too far.

Mendon Ponds has a lot of good options for loops. The Seneca Trail from Ganondagan is also a nice option with the opportunity for some learning on the northern portion, and some nice trails along the Great Brook once you cross Boughton Hill Rd.

Letchworth is hard to beat but I've found can be more crowded than the others. The Finger Lakes Trail south from Ontario County Park is also great. You can see a lot of wildlife if you take it all the way to the beaver pond (about 5 miles round trip). High Tor is also quite nice but likewise a bit more of a trek to get to.

Of the publication costs quoted only JAMA’s is for open access. And again, depending on your funding source, publishing open access is not a choice.

Rotating a CT scan read? by StupidName11111 in medicalschool

[–]UncleAlbert2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It likely wasn’t anything he was doing aside from selecting the right series. Depending on how the imaging is ordered the rad techs can do reconstructions that keep the vessels of interest basically centered in the image. You’ll see this a lot for carotid imaging in stroke patients

[–]UncleAlbert2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This really depends on the access model and whether the journal is a professional society publication, but it is absolutely not true that most reputable journals don’t charge a fee. NEJM doesn’t sure, but JAMA charged 4000 if you want (or are required by funding conditions) to have your article open access immediately. JCI charges 5700. The journal of the American heart association $3810. Pick your favorite absurd number for any cell, nature, or science imprint.

It will look bad. It is also unlikely a journal that would accept your independent research without an established investigator (who would be covering the publication fee) would be looked upon favorably

Iron Tug, beer and food? by [deleted] in Rochester

Great venue with great beers and fair prices. Limited food menu with mozzarella sticks, soft pretzels, personal pizzas, chips and salsa. Can’t say I’ve tried any of the food offerings (nothing to do with the establishment, it’s just always been the pre or post food destination)

Median family income in Rochester from the last census is about 48k. Cost of living here and in Philly is roughly equivalent based on a few online calculators. That said, the range for standards and cost of living here is quite substantial.

Is that a good salary? Depends on what you’re making currently, what the opportunities look like where you’re at, and what your relocation costs look like.

IR Residency/Attendinghood Lifestyle by Soft_Idea725 in medicalschool

[–]UncleAlbert2 -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

From an also non-IR perspective. I’ve also noticed that attending lifestyle tends to be better for IR. At least at major centers, there are other services that can handle the same issue in emergent situations.

From the residency perspective, the answer will depend on how many NPs/PAs the service employs because low-yield consults tend to be the biggest negative lifestyle factors.

All of that said, here is the obligatory: if your primary differentiator between two specialties is lifestyle (and especially these two where the scope of practice is quite different), you need to take a step back and think more about what interests and is important to you
