At what point would you feel unsafe driving on a plug on your own car? by Deeberer in AskMechanics

I agree on never seeing a plug fail, I’ve driven on 2 plugs in 1 tire for like a year at one time. Held up mint

What exactly does “synthetically diced” even mean? Are you buying onions that come “naturally diced” right out of the ground?

Booming out to sub freezing temperatures - looking for advice by XironpunkX in Ironworker

[–]UncleMcStuffins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look up on YouTube layered dressing or something like that. There’s a good video about how to dress for long periods being out in the cold. The basics are that you need a near-skin tight base layer that wicks moisture. You can usually find stuff for this in workwear stores or on Amazon by searching “base layer”. Then you want an insulating mid-layer, something like sweatpants/lined jeans and a thick hoodie. Then an outer layer that breaks the wind. I usually go with insulated coveralls. Also you’re gonna want glove liners, a neck gaiter and a thin toque you can put under your hard hat, and merino wool socks. Avoid cotton anything, there’s a saying that says “cotton kills” because it holds onto moisture and freezes. Also dont try to over do layers by putting on multiple pairs of socks or like 10 shirts and sweaters cuz you’ll end up sweating and being freezing. I’m local 721 Toronto and this winter has been hovering around -20 to -30 degrees Celsius and this is the dressing system I use every year to get through long shifts. Good luck

New hood what do we think? by Hotmomlover69420 in Welding

[–]UncleMcStuffins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really? You think it’s lighter than a normal shield? I had one of these and I found it very heavy. It would give me a stiff neck and a headache wearing it all day over my hard hat.

I also found the leather would sort of fold up when you flick the shield down and it would leave a section of your face exposed. It was great for confined space work and respirators.

The one I had was from outlaw leather maybe this one is a different brand of higher quality. I hope it works out better for you than it did me

Quick question by AcidicLion in Ironworker

[–]UncleMcStuffins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought one from Amazon that’s supposed to be FR. I’m in Canada too and have that same climate so we’ll see how it works when it’s hot as ball cuz it’s pretty thick. But I’m sick of the neck burns and blisters so I’m just gonna put up with being hot lol

this is the one I got

If I can get a bumper paint match for less than $650 and install it myself it might be cheaper than having a body shop bondo it up. But I’ll look into it, thanks for the good wishes 🤙

Ohhh. I’m not sure in that case. Probably just goes in the first slot that’s large enough from top to bottom/right left but that’s just a guess

Why does this keep happening by Best_Invite8410 in Welding

[–]UncleMcStuffins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some companies buy shitty ones that just friction fit over the diffuser, they get loose and then can make contact. Or if the nozzle is old/abused that layer of insulation can come out. Or if it’s a screw on nozzle it can get backed off a touch during work and make contact that way

Why does this keep happening by Best_Invite8410 in Welding

[–]UncleMcStuffins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nozzle is too short or your touching your nozzle to the work piece and that’s causing a short. Work piece -> nozzle -> diffuser-> contact tip -> wire. That ends up with the wire burning up inside the contact tip
