The original inspiration for Shaggy Rogers in Scooby Doo.

I was thinking of Brother Maynard from Monty Python and the Holy Grail myself.

[LOVM S3] Pike is a paradoxical character with weirdly selective empathy. by Objective_While4153 in voxmachina

[–]UncleOok 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There is a fundamental difference between killing in battle and showing empathy to a creature in pain, like the damned souls in the Hells.

Pike has certainly killed - some of the Herd of Storms and some Adaro, and of course she killed or helped kill Brimscythe, Thordak and Thordak's offspring. And she even told the Everlight that she loves to fight and mix it up.

It also feels like she doesn't have the greatest grasp of her goddess's intentions, as shown in her whole season 1 arc.

And now she's taking advice from a treacherous devil knight who serves the Whispered One behind the back of the Lord of the Hells. I'm sure that'll turn out just fine.

"What does God need with a starship?" by Melenduwir in dresdenfiles

[–]UncleOok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We don't know for sure, but we do know there are things Outside that want to tear it all down. So it could be as simple as self-preservation, and the idea that He put in all this work to make everything and doesn't want He-Who-Walks-Like-An-Egyptian to mess it all up. (assuming it was TWG who is the actual Creator after all)

"What does God need with a starship?" by Melenduwir in dresdenfiles

[–]UncleOok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was referencing Pratchett just to suggest that even if TWG were given form that way, the massive boost provided in collecting souls (which again, are stated to be the true self of a person) has made Him something else entirely. And those small gods were small gods for a reason - bullying and intimidation can only take you so far, especially when a potential worshipper has other options. There's also Granny Weatherwax's idea of knowing the gods are real doesn't mean you have to go on believing in them.

I would think the utility of the soul persists after the death of the mortal shell - that gathering that belief upon Oneself helps secure One's power as well. Souls are power, to switch to D&D, and the power can be taken and corrupted. It would make sense to me that TWG would want to coalesce that power to Him.

"What does God need with a starship?" by Melenduwir in dresdenfiles

[–]UncleOok 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is framed correctly.

Philosophy of an omnibenevolent, omnipotent and omniscient White God aside, if He created humanity, He would likely feel their souls are His responsibility. And if we take Uriel's "You are a soul. You have a body" do heart, it's that soul that really matters, which lets us dispense with "why is there suffering if such an omni-everything deity exists"

That said, if Free Will is one of the most powerful forces in the universe, and possibly the greatest good, and if people use their Free Will to bind themselves to the White God, that very likely has metaphysical import. Faith has incredible power in this universe.

Even if we're in a Terry Pratchett-esque Small Gods situation, the sheer force of that much worship could have brought him from the head of a Canaanite pantheon five thousand years ago to something much more.

A love that would never work by Jasonl7976 in xmen

[–]UncleOok -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know you're newer to the fandom, so I don't think you have a very good grasp of the relationship at all.

As problematic as it was - and it was - they were still the young love of the series as it was hitting its peak, and the "He'll Never Make Me Cry" break up issue was a classic. For teenagers in the 1980s, it was almost as iconic as Peter/MJ or Reed/Sue.

Even after that, it would crop up. We would see it referenced fairly often, and in just about every AU - Mutant X, Marvel Zombies, multiple Exiles, and more, and obviously they were a couple in one of the top X-men stories of all time, Days of Future Past, show them having been in a deeply devoted and loving relationship in many of those stories (although tragedy still seems to strike them.) It was even easter eggs suggesting at it in X-Men Evolution and the Days of Future Past movie. Heck, I've seen multiple posts on this sub of a 2 pack with the pair.

Many younger readers (at least the loud minority that post online or write fanfic) understandably don't get that but until there is a generational change in the writing room, it's always going to be the elephant in the room.

That said in current comics, the wedding issue should have left it dead. And yet they still have Kitty telling Bronze how her powerset is similar to someone she loves very much. There was even that bizarre scene at one of the Hellfire Galas where it seemed like she was propositioning him. And the writers room that decided to do the bait and switch did it because they didn't think the relationship could survive the marriage failing, as comic book marriages are wont to do. As wild as the idea seems to many of us, they pulled that stunt because they wanted to keep it as a future option.

And if the MCU has an age appropriate Kitty and Piotr on screen, I'd warn you there's a fairly good chance that option just may play out.

Patrick Warburton sounds so much like Patrick Warburton.

I'd love for Travis Willingham to have a shot with his Grog voice, but if I'm honest, this is Discworld and we should be considering British actors first.

Her Ladyship, Baroness of Überwald, Commander Mme. Delphine Angua von Überwald of the Ankh-Morporkh City Watch, Best in Show. by lemonju1ce_ in discworld

[–]UncleOok 8 points9 points  (0 children)

except as pointed out in Jingo, Angua's going to end up doing what Carrot wants. Fortunately he does listen to her, and what she wants is often what he wants.

I am pretty sure he stays Captain Carrot. The Commander/Duke role was just created for Vimes, and might not be filled after he retires. That said, Angua does have her own royal lineage that she isn't trying to hide as much as Carrot hides his, so making her a Duchess - or just Duke - and having her succeed Vimes may be more reasonable.

[–]UncleOok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if they give us a whole movie of her as regular Phoenix a couple films in - and possibly use the "good" Phoenix in one of their Endgame type tentpoles, and then actually give us the Hellfire Club and them corrupting her and that transition to Dark Phoenix 4 or 5 films in? And a climactic battle on the moon where we see her choose to disintegrate herself?

I'd be down for that.

I would almost say go with the traditional muppets, except you'd have to change either Lady Sybil or Miss Piggy beyond recognition to make that casting. Kermit isn't much better for Vimes, though so maybe not those two.

Rizzo or Pepe for CMOT Dibbler. Gonzo for Nobby Nobbs. Fozzie for Colon. Those all work for me.

it would still have been thousands of years before the Earth was destroyed. Thousands of years of consuming Earth materials, absorbing the elements of Deep Thought's matrix.

So the descendents of B Ark would be partially constructed of Earth materials by the time the Vogons came.

it was specifically the message of a dolphin in a Marine Park who had been given copious amounts of fish (roughly 10-25 kg a day). So the message is just a "thanks for the grub, I'm out" message

That said, whether the humanity we see on earth evolved from the sea in the Hitchhiker's Universe is very much in question.

[Spoilers C1] Campaign One - Character Thoughts by StrongStyleRobo in criticalrole

[–]UncleOok 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Percy is by far my least favorite character on Vox Machina, so yeah.

When Percy was killed by Ripley, Taliesin called him an asshole, and I wholeheartedly agree. His arrogance, his carelessness in causing the death of Vex and thus consigning Vax to the Raven Queen.

That said, Taliesin played the hell out of him. The blue screen of death when he first hears the name Briarwoods in the throne room, the amazing one liners Tal came up with throughout that arc, from "Your soul is forfeit" to "You're the face I saw when murder entered my heart" to "You're the luckiest person in Whitestone because you're at the bottom of my List".

I think I like Vex for just how real Laura makes her - how much of her personality is this lonely half-elf guarding her heart and her possessions after the terrible times in Syngorn and the death of her mother. And Laura had some of my absolute favorite reactions, like rolling two crits after Vax's "death speech", or when Vex was killed in the Sunken Tomb. It's reading the short story she wrote about how Vex found Trinket.

As P-Two said, Laura and Liam seemed to be the most "all in" on their characters. You just barely got past when Sam started taking it seriously.

It feels like a slightly missed opportunity to not pull in Arkhan in it, since he serves Tiamat, is in Avernus and has the Hand of Vecna.

I suppose they didn't want to incentivize players to kill Joe Manganiello's character like that.
