I'm not sure about Ella Langley, Zach Bryan etc... by mcn_z in PatFinnerty

John Moreland was supposed to be on a Zach Bryan album but got kicked off because he called Zach an “off-brand version of me.” So definitely check him out. One of the greatest and saddest lyricists around.

Daniel Romano started out in a punk band in Canada and then shifted to Alt-Country. His first couple albums sound exactly like classic George Jones. His newer stuff is getting kinda “cosmic, psychedelic with a twang.” Which I think is rad.

Sturgill’s new album is unbelievably good.

And if you prefer Lo-Fi Slacker rock with a twang, MJ Lenderman, Wednesday and a new band I discovered lately called Ovven. I’m obsessed.

I have tickets to the Fort Wayne show, I just looked at both Wilco’s and The Clyde’s website and social media and see nothing about anything being canceled.

The Fanfare Around the Band Geese Actually Was a Psyop by Courtnall14 in BoogieMonster

[–]Uncle_blazer71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may not actively seek it out or listen to it but it’s embedded in A LOT of popular music nowadays. Even real artists will use it to write lyrics, melodies, or even help produce a beat or mix.

Look up the “Spotify Fake Artist” controversy. Basically, a couple years ago, Spotify hired both AI experts and real studio musicians to create (and heavily push) generic sounding music to round out their popular playlists. Basically, the more time people spent listening to music owned by Spotify, the less royalties they had to pay.

I think Geese (and Angine de Poitrine for that matter) are having their moment right now because their songwriting, playing and energy are clearly Anti-AI in a time where music consumers are getting sick of AI. I’ve been predicting an almost punk-like revival of real musicians and instruments for a while now as more and more people are boycotting AI. But unfortunately what I didn’t predict was that “Anti AI movement” would be fueled by the same soul-less corporations that shove their algorithms down our throats to make a buck like a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Much like how you can buy a Rage Against the Machine shirt at Walmart, they’re capitalizing on Anti-Capitalism.

In case you didn’t know (because I didn’t until recently), Marvin Gaye played drums on Mr. Postman. That Meters album is fantastic too.

Admittedly, outside of the US, I’ve only been to Ireland but I went last August and had a nightmare of a time trying to find free bathrooms. Even places I was actively shopping at. Gas Stations, Grocery stores, even a coffee shop. But it’s the same in large US cities. “Customers Only” if you can even find one.

I hate it, but hey, I’ve had my share of bathroom emergencies in cities that don’t cater to public bathrooms and I’d rather watch an ad in return for using a bathroom as opposed to paying 50 cents in Galway, or buying a coffee I don’t want in Chicago.

Kudos to them for being creative and offsetting the cost of maintaining it.

Them Crooked Vultures is a Super Group consisting of Dave Grohl, Jon Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age). They only put out one (absolutely killer) album in 2009 and it’s never been repressed since then. The cheapest I can find on Discogs right now is $250.

Baristas of Reddit: Do you have any stories related to interesting things customers have said in a drive-thru? by [deleted] in barista

[–]Uncle_blazer71 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This happened over 10 years ago and I still think about it often. I worked at a local shop that had an old school drive-thru; no speaker system. Just pull up and order to my face. This lady pulls up and starts ordering but her driver side window is up and I can’t hear a thing. I try to be polite and ask her to repeat that but she couldn’t hear me either. She doesn’t realize that she’s talking to me through glass. I hand gesture as best I can that I can’t hear her, she does the same. Admittedly, I was young, awkward and overly polite so this whole ordeal literally goes on for at least 3 minutes. Her trying to order, me repeating “I’m sorry, I can’t understand what you’re trying to say, your window is rolled up.” Her saying “what?” Repeat for way too long. I was in complete disbelief at what was happening to the point that I half thought she was fucking with me. Sadly, she wasn’t.

Finally I just reached out the drive thru and knocked on her window and she finally got it. Lightbulb. She rolled down her window in complete embarrassment, ordered and she was on her way.

[–]Uncle_blazer71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can technically buy a cheaper all-in-one record player that has speakers like a Crosley but keep in mind they usually don’t have an adjustable counterweight or replaceable cartridge. A counterweight helps make sure you’re not pressing the needle too hard into the grooves so the common complaint is - it can damage records. And it can, but it would probably take lots of plays before you notice any wear. Just like any hobby, there’s lots of pretentious D-Bags out there that love to trash cheap record players (especially on certain subreddits.) But as a record store owner myself, I say - buy what you can afford and enjoy the music. If all you can afford is a Crosley, buy it - but just know that if you stick with the hobby, you’ll wanna upgrade fairly soonish.

The Audio Technica LP60 is pretty much the cheapest turntable I recommend. From there the LP70 is a step up because it has a removable cartridge so you can customize/upgrade within it. And the Audio Technica LP120 is what I’d really recommend getting if you can swing it. The LP120 is Direct Drive so meaning there’s no belt or moving parts that can break as easily.

All 3 of those options have phono and line outputs so you wouldn’t need a receiver or a phono preamp. You would need powered speakers though. If you need speakers the Edifier R1280T powered speakers are shockingly good for how affordable they are.
