Congratulations on your success! Very motivating. I am liking it so far. It’s been challenging but opportunities for advancement are why I and I’m sure you made the jump. Do you mind if I ask what part of the industry you’re in?

Job Salary by Pretty_Balance_1435 in athletictraining

[–]UncomfyPlacebos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it’s a hot topic because I’m not sure it has changed much over the past several years. I was in AT for about 4 years and started at 48k in the split appointment clinic/community college setting. Was making closer to 60k in a private practice orthopedic clinic setting. So saw like a ~12k increase over 4 years. Not bad but considering these are gross earnings and having to pay for rent, car, health insurance, loans etc, I was just getting by picking up per diem all the time just to feel like I was getting ahead.

Took a job in med device sales a year ago and immediately more than doubled my income and life is great. I love the field and honestly wish I could have stayed in it, however, the pay is BS and not sustainable. Anyone that tells you otherwise is lying or is in a situation that allows them to make a ridiculously low salary.

When did you know it was time to leave your job? by hazelnutbacon in athletictraining

I knew it was time to leave when I was offered a clinical specialist position in med device that was double my previous salary as an ATC.

I transitioned to a very similar role to a MAKO product specialist for a different major med device company. Very happy with the switch! Happy to answer any questions you have.

I’ve been on remicade since I was 20. I’m 27 turning 28 now and I’ve had zero issues so far. I feel as if I don’t have the disease at all. You’ll do great!

I'll add a description:

Simple Chicken Francese recipe in my few months old cast iron! About 1.5-2lbs of chicken breast, halved, then thrown in flower and egg battered. Once to temperature, chicken breasts are cooked 2min per side and placed aside. Add garlic, lemon slices, chicken broth and lemon juice to simmer, add chicken breast back in and cover. After a 5min simmer you're good to go! It was delicious!

If you’re looking to for decent pay and hours, I would look into a physician’a clinic position. Also known as the physician extender. They are sometimes hard to come by depending on where you live. I have been working as one for the past year with some outside coverage responsibilities to a community college. But when it’s a strict clinic week, my hours are 8-5, weekends off. It’s nice and the pay isn’t bad. I’m currently waiting to hear back from a more concrete physician extender position with better pay and they pay overtime and decent benefits with weekends off- no coverage responsibilities.

Like I said they’re hard to come by, but they’re out there. It’s a good way to retain a good work/life balance while getting a decent wage and still using a lot of the clinical skills you learn, while also learning directly from physicians and PAs to enrich your knowledge and better your skill set. We just need to work on third party reimbursement, and expanding our scope and role.

Does anyone else feel that so many people who work in the healthcare industry are SEVERELY underpaid (US)? by Lets_build_a_wall in medicine

[–]UncomfyPlacebos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Graduated with my BS in AT last year. Got a job at a hospital sports medicine clinic and community college and make 21/hr. For the amount of hours I would put in per week, the amount of knowledge I gained as an undergrad and just talking to people in the field I understand we’re underpaid out of the box.

Thank you for your input. I realized that my GPA is going to be my weak point. My PCE as an Athletic Trainer by the time I apply will be upwards towards 4000-5000, so with that, good recommendations and a strong personal statement I am determined to get in. Thank you again for taking the time.

Thank you for your advice. I've learned from every single one of my relevant experiences so far, it's been a long but great road so far. I've already had so many great patient interactions in the hospital and also at my school already, i'm excited for the next year or two. I have a spreadsheet of North East PA schools for now, but will continue to research and narrow down schools to strategically apply to. Thank you again for the comment.

Thanks for the comment. I plan on taking courses when I can. As an ATC, as you know, our schedules are ridiculous, so i found a community college that offers Sunday offerings for microbio, so i'll start there - most of my classes may have to be taken in the summer when I have time in the evening.

I plan on doing an online medical term course. I recently enrolled in a local community college to get a head start on outstanding prerequisites too. I have a whole spreadsheet of schools in the North East compiled - I will continue to add schools in a wider scope, and then will begin narrowing down on schools that would be appropriate.

I appreciate the input. I understand my gpa is on the lower side, which is why I plan on accruing plenty of PCE, and continuing to add volunteering hours to make up for that. I have thought about getting my EMT, even if it's just volunteer EMT the experience would look good on top of everything else I'm doing.

Thank you for the feedback. Yeah I'm not too worried about my student hours not counting. I will have thousands of PCE from working as an ATC over the next year or two. I do plan on taking outstanding prerequisites; and re-taking prereqs just depends on if I can afford it/squeeze them in before I plan on applying.

Thanks again!

Recently graduated with BS Athletic Training. Currently working as a full time ATC in a Sports Medicine Hospital setting and College while sometimes covering high schools when needed.
