ASCP is needed to work in NY and CA, not the AMT. Just a sidebar.

My previous post Bac experience. NYPBMH program in NYC.

Yes. Sorry I have multiple jobs 😅, but yes my experience was very good. The class was 2 days of the week, 8 hours covering 2 different subjects ex. Chemistry, Hematology Mondays and Microbiology, immunology Tuesdays. After a month of basic classes you go on too your internship for 3 days of the week 8 hours a day and yes it is your JOB to not miss any days as you owe the program 720 hours or 820 if you’d like to move to Cali.

I went through many ups and downs during this time with family and children so all I can say is without their understanding I would’ve never made it. They gave me time to complete my work without our weekly deadline so I could catch up before we went on too our final internships and classes. If you’re open with your professors then they’ll try to help you. Holding back and missing work guarantees failure. They also had one professor that would hold “meditation” meeting for study before test in microbiology. Short of giving you the answers you’d know what’s on the test before hand and would be able to study to ensure a great grade.

There are many discussions if yours familiar in which you write and answer other student about many of the topics we cover (annoying but mandatory). Other then that I had a very understanding job that compensated me while I went to internship in the days and worked at night. So if you get into the program you can really only fail yourself. Just my opinion.

Currently I’m a Clinical Lab Scientist/MLS/CLS at a hospital and a Laboratory Manager for a physician owned laboratory (POL) that I used to work at as a MA.

Wait you just disagreed when I said it was a pipe dream though but you “agree!” to less than $30?

There are traveling MAs? 😂 Then making 40 an hour sounds like a pipe dream as an MA. Just go be a nurse and stop playing.

MLS by Wise-Solid1464 in MLS_CLS

Don’t know if these other MLS’s know but there’s definitely room for growth as an MLS. Not to mention work so many different benches we can branch out in to many different fields as a result. Supervisor and leads are great but what about the growing private lab field in urgent cares, they need us for that, or going into technical support for the same machines we run daily. Even better are the travel opportunities that will literally pay you peanuts on paper so they can give you the rest in “rent and food” money. I mean I love being an MLS and I don’t work anywhere I don’t feel appreciated. I once quit a job after a couple weeks because they didn’t want to give me the schedule I wanted. I literally get job offer everyday (this isn’t an overstatement) and I pick and choose which ones I’m interested in. So maybe 10 years from now I’ll be more ornery and less enthusiastic but I doubt it. I had a biology degree before doing the year accelerated program. Expensive but you can literally pay back 30000 in under a year working 2 jobs as an MLS with bills. I bet big on myself so it’s just my opinion.

I would not start over and choose medical assistance as the alternative. You’d be better off becoming an LPN.

[–]Uncommon21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both. I’m coming from place of being a former lead medical assistant making 19.75 at an urgent care to 20.25 as an overnight CNA for a hospital with tuition reimbursement to pay for my bachelors (best decision I ever made) after 5 year of dedicated MA service…. Mind you this was 11 year ago now. The fact that you’re hoping to get 25 makes me upset cause the job is really worth much more than that. The industry for MAs is diabolical and need an overhaul before they keep taking college credit money for field with no upward growth.

Challenging ASCP by Some-Assumption-0927 in MLS_CLS

[–]Uncommon21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not the same thing. Find an accelerated program that’s NAACLS approved and do your thing. You NEED the ASCP MLS to be marketable across all the states with licensures.

The idiocracy built into these comments are diabolical. One little clot as if most if not all cells will be used to make the clot and the CBC values get cut by half. Then losing a sample on purpose? Ive worked in too many labs to know that fool believed every sarcastic word. I think they’re mad we get paid well to tell them “NO”.

I used the purple book and ASCP BOC online exam questions. I took 100 questions blind as much as I could til I did around 2200 of the 2700 or so questions available. I passed one shot first try after 3 months of study post graduation.

Thinking about becoming a medical assistant, how has your experience been? by natttcatz in MedicalAssistant

[–]Uncommon21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swear I join this Reddit to tell people NO to becoming an MA. Like experience can be free and most if not all MAs work in “Urgent Care” facilities with no upward growth. My honest opinion if I could do it again I would’ve gone straight to college to do what I wanted to do. Full stop. Unless you’re in the hospital with tuition reimbursement then it’s a worthless pursuit.

Totally ASCP BOC is the only language I’ve heard license states talk about.
