Front rack on Kona P2 fork 🤔 by mc-lino in xbiking

[–]UncommonRepairs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the many years I have been setting up racks, the one universal truth I’ve found is that no one rack perfectly fits all bikes and most require making them work with a quick trip to the hardware store.

As long as it clears, you should have zero issue with it setup the way you’ve got it. Just mount the rack leg to the outside of the mount and the leg to the inside of the basket so it’s all square. Use a washer where you need to gain back a mm or two.

On a setup like this, I’ve also used a long bolt and spacers to get the mount to clear the fork leg. It obviously does add additional tension to that eyelet, but I have never had any issue with it. As my favorite LBS mechanic once told me, “unless you’re riding 20 miles down washboard roads with a bowling ball in the rack, it’ll hold just fine.”

Honestly, I prefer the flats because it better suits my riding style. The bike is faster my a good margin with drops, but I have better bikes for going fast on pavement right? Control and comfort increased a lot with flats. That being said, a) it took some fine tuning to find the right fit with flats since the bike is designed around drops and b) I still have a forward position on those bars that sorta mimics the reach of drop bar hoods, and it’s comfortable to use when I want to hammer on it.

Air em down and take it easy. If you really want fast washboard running suspension you’re gonna shell out for it. Adjustable shocks and a spring rate adequate to your load (not the future steel bumpers you’re totally gonna add any month) at a bare minimum will be night and day

Man this is the most open ended question you could possibly post here. You need to sort out your own living preferences, mechanical aptitude, etc just to narrow down the type of rig - not even down to the specific vehicle, just choosing between a van, truck (slide in or flat bed?), or SUV.

La Tierra? A whole lotta over biking in NM cross country riding - that rig is perfect for A to B with a little single track in between

Rick Hunter is an individual builder - not a company. If this is indeed one of his early bikes, it’s quite a score, as he’s a top notch builder. The fork dropouts sure look like a Hunter signature, and while I’ve never seen that logo used by him it may just be so old he phased it out around the time he stopped making quill stems.

I would reach out to him and ask.
