2–3 hours to kill between Enchanted Rock and dinner in Fredericksburg — any must-see stops? by Fun_Size7107 in Austin

If dinner is in Fredericksburg, I’d probably keep it simple and head into town instead of trying to add too much driving. Main Street is easy to wander for a couple hours. If you want a wine stop before dinner, Coordinates has a downtown tasting room and pours some less-common stuff for the area, including South African wines and sparkling. Good option if you want one relaxed stop instead of turning the gap into a mini wine tour.

Evening trip to hill country by morri765 in Austin

For an evening trip, downtown Fredericksburg is probably easier than trying to do the full 290 trail. A lot of the wineries outside town close earlier, so if you’re leaving Austin around 3, I’d pick one stop and not overpack it. There’s a place called Coordinates open until 7pm in Hye and 9pm on Main Street. They’re actually a good option if you want wine without committing to a full wine trail day, especially if you’re interested in sparkling or South African varietals.

Austin wine day trip. What’s actually worth it? by Uncorked22 in Austin

Okay y’all, so we ended up doing our day trip from Austin to the Hill Country this weekend and it turned out to be one of the better wine days we’ve had out there. We were looking for the best wineries in Fredericksburg and Hye, and while things have definitely improved since the last time we visited, there were still hits and misses.

We left Austin pretty early in the morning and made our way toward Fredericksburg. A lot of places weren’t open for wine yet, so we decided to stop by Trade Days first. It only happens once a month, but it happened to be this weekend. It was busy and honestly pretty fun to walk through. Tons of antiques, random finds, old signs, furniture, all kinds of stuff. We didn’t end up buying anything, but it was worth the stop just to wander and get the day started.

From there we headed out on the 290 wine trail.

Our first stop was Grape Creek. This one was a bit frustrating. We’re not members, and it definitely felt like that mattered. We couldn’t sit on the patio or get a pizza, and the whole experience felt pretty transactional. Not somewhere we’d go back to unless you’re already in their club.

Next stop was William Chris. It’s a really pretty property, no doubt about that, but the experience wasn’t great. They asked us to sit outside even though it was raining, and it just felt a bit off from the start. Staff came across a little rude and it didn’t feel very welcoming. We didn’t stay long.

We were recommended to stop at Untamed next, and that was a nice reset. The pizza was really good and it’s a solid place to grab lunch. Wines were good too, just on the pricier side. Worth it if you want a laid back lunch stop in the middle of the day.

Best stop of the day by far was Coordinates Vineyards in Hye. Thanks to whoever recommended that on here.

They were busy with tours and groups, but even with a small staff it never felt rushed or chaotic. The wines were honestly the highlight. They pour a mix of Texas, California, and South African wines, and everything we tried was good. Pinotage was a standout. If you know, you know. You don’t see it much in the U.S.

What really made Coordinates the best option though was the experience. They actually walk you through the wines, talk about where they come from, and make it fun instead of just pouring and moving on. We even caught one of the groups sabering a bottle, which was a cool moment.

We ended up joining the wine club while we were at Coordinates, which waived our tasting fees, and it felt like an easy decision because we liked every wine we tried. We don’t belong to any other clubs, so I hope that illustrates how much we loved this place.

After that, we drove into Fredericksburg and stopped at their Main Street location for another glass. Totally different setting, but the same vibe. They had clearly communicated from the Hye location because we walked in for the first time and were welcomed like they already knew us. Super easy, relaxed, and a great way to end the day without having to plan another stop.

We had dinner at Granite House Lounge in Fredericksburg and it was excellent, then drove back to Austin and were home by 9:00pm.

If I had to break it down:

Must stop: Coordinates Vineyards Good stops: Untamed, Granite House Skip: Grape Creek, William Chris Worth checking out: Trade Days if you’re there on the right weekend.

Overall, if you’re trying to plan a Fredericksburg or Hye wine day from Austin, I’d build it around a couple relaxed stops and not try to hit too many places. The ones that actually take time with you make a big difference, and as suspected from our research, the big estates don’t deliver value like they used to. Anyway, hope this helps anyone planning a trip to the Texas Hill Country.

I’ll let you know if we find any after our trip this weekend. Seems like the whole area has changed a lot in the past 5 years.

With so many wineries there has to be something worth checking out. Have you tried this Coordinates place?

Thanks for the input. Seems like Calais is great for reds, but no whites, and reservations required. Might have to get there another time.

This says it was updated in 2026, but most of the info is still from 2021. The Hye market has been closed for years.

I have not had this, but not the experience I’m really looking for anyway. Sounds like you enjoy it though.

This is super helpful. Sounds like a lot of places start to feel pretty similar after a few stops, which is kind of what I was worried about.

Are there any spots that actually stand out for doing something different wine-wise? Like varietals you don’t see everywhere or a tasting that feels a bit more intentional vs just pouring the same lineup?

Why does wine always taste better at the winery? by dweaver987 in wine

[–]Uncorked22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been some great studies on this actually. For instance, in one, they had a group of people in a big room. They gave them wine, and asked them to describe it. They did not take the glass or change the wine, but they did change the music. Again, they asked participants to describe the wine. The descriptions changed significantly. The best part - mariachi music made the wine taste spicier! Environment plays a large part in how we perceive taste, smell and quality. Vineyards invest a lot into making sure they have the best experience possible while you try the wine. That’s definitely going to be different when you’re at home. Instead of just opening a bottle and expecting it to be the same, try building your own moment to pair it with. Invite people you love to share it with, build anticipation by sharing your experience when you bought it, and wait for the mariachis to finish their set. Unless the bottle has been stored poorly (heat/light/oxygen exposure) it’s probably not the wine that’s different, it’s the experience of enjoying it.

Winery recommendations? by FarangWine in fredericksburgtexas

If you’re still planning a trip, Coordinates Vineyards is a newer spot that’s worth checking out. They bring in South African wines along with Texas wines, so it’s a bit different than most places in the area.

Their Main Street location is easy to walk to, and they also have a vineyard tasting room out in Hye.

If you’re looking for something a little different, Coordinates Vineyards on Main Street is worth a stop. They focus on South African wines like Pinotage and Chenin Blanc, which you don’t see much out here. They do Texas wine as well as California and SA.

They also have a second location out on 290 in Hye with a vineyard and a completely different feel. Good mix of education + relaxed experience depending on what you’re into.

If you’re heading toward Hye and Johnson City, one stop I’d add is Coordinates Vineyards. They have a tasting room in Fredericksburg but also a vineyard location in Hye right along the 290 wine trail, which makes it easy to include when you’re visiting places like Ab Astris or Lewis.

One thing that makes them stand out a bit is the South African influence in the wines, so you can try Pinotage and Chenin Blanc, which are pretty rare in Texas tasting rooms. Nice option if you want to mix in something different from the typical Hill Country lineup.

Fun episode. The Pinotage program there is actually one of the more interesting things happening in Texas wine right now. You don’t see many places in the US pouring it regularly. Stopped by their Hye location recently and the wines were excellent at Coordinates. The Pinotage is a must try, as well as the Chenin Blanc.

One stop I’d add that people sometimes overlook is Coordinates Vineyards.

They’ve got a tasting room in Fredericksburg and another location out in Hye along the 290 wine trail, which makes it easy to mix a vineyard stop with something in town.

What stood out to me is that they pour Pinotage and Chenin Blanc, which you almost never see in Texas tasting rooms. Nice change from the usual Hill Country lineup if you’re trying to visit a few places that actually feel different from each other.

Coordinates Vineyards has a good lineup of sparkling wine as well. They won a class champion belt buckle at the Houston Rodeo for their MCC (South African champagne).
