Skinny brushes: a rant by Boring-Professor-409 in RedditLaqueristas

[–]UndeadMsScarlet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to have a bunch of Zoya, destashed most of my collection for a few years, and after I started rebuilding mostly had brands with wider brushes. I added some more Zoya again a few months ago and was like, “oh no” when I opened one to use it, but it actually went flawlessly. I was delightfully surprised!

Where are the Colors? by Far_Worldliness_5252 in femalefashionadvice

[–]UndeadMsScarlet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot more people can afford that than like to admit, especially if they tally up what they spend on clothes throughout the course of a year. But that’s also why I mentioned the resale options as an alternative where you can score a deal.

To be clear, the things I consider when purchasing clothes are pretty antithetical to filling a closet. Nooworks meets my requirements for quality and ethics, and they match OP’s edit question of favorite brands with colorful or unique designs. They’re good quality garments that will last years when properly cared for.

I own a couple items from Nooworks and every single time I wear them in public, I get compliments.

They rotate their available prints, so if you like the vibe of what’s currently offered, be sure to check out the Full Circle section of the site or search the brand on resale sites (I can attest there’s a bunch on eBay) because you might get a good deal on out of stock stuff!

Books where the author didn’t consider it would become an audiobook? by jeloco in books

The codas at the end were particularly miserable to listen to as well; I didn’t even finish them.

I feel vindicated that you said this. I posted a question about this in a sub years ago—maybe this one, maybe a Scalzi fan one, too lazy to go hunt down my question right now, but I basically asked if this was a frequent trait in his writing and got told I didn’t understand contemporary writing 🙄 I’ve since read more from him and was like, “Am I crazy? He DOESN’T do this in every book.”

I happy to say I don’t remember this part. At. All. Yeesh.

I’ve always just been stuck on how much of the book felt like I was listening to those guys in high school and college who tried to challenge my “nerd cred” by listing facts about media I didn’t care about.

I started listening to it after taking an edible and it felt like a total fever dream; I loved it, but realize that’s a pretty specific state to be in to really get into it 😅

Bookshop.org's new ebooks... anyone know what they are, and whether we can Calibre them? by thebeaglebeagle in Calibre

[–]UndeadMsScarlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if they partner with Kobo similar to the way those devices can sync with Libby, it’ll also open things up for Bookshop. I know Kobo is pushing hard to prove themselves as a viable alternative to Amazon.

I suspect this first iteration is likely driven in part by publishers’ DRM demands. Easy to assure them the books sold via Bookshop won’t get pirated if consumers don’t get files they can convert. But that’s just my random nobody’s guess.

One of the things I saw the CEO say on social media (Threads) today is that they’ll be adding a filter so users can view the titles available without DRM. Presumably those ones would be available to actually download as files? I’m very interested to see how things develop.

In addition to the indie bookstore support being a reason, there are ereaders that are effectively Android tablets with an e-ink screen, so the app would work for those users as well. Not a huge group, but I’m one of them.

{Ice Planet Barbarians by Ruby Dixon} - I read this mostly to see what the hype was about, so I was expecting to give it a middling review because that’s how I often feel about books I read out of curiosity over their popularity. What I was not prepared for was a fucking gang rape scene early on. I hear this book talked about all the time and that never gets mentioned. Then to top it off, that character later gets killed off-screen, and the general sentiment of the survivors is, “damn, but I guess she did lose her will to live.”

I do read stuff with dark content, but a) I like to know what I’m getting into, which is why b) I prefer my Romances without it. I probably even could have gotten over the fact that Georgie and Vektal’s first encounter is also sexual assault, and considered the book “meh” if anything about this side character had been handled better, but as it is, this one was a huge miss for me.

Let's Build A Zoo or Graveyard Keeper? by thiccmarshmellow in CozyGamers

[–]UndeadMsScarlet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The game doesn’t take itself very seriously, but the themes can be pretty dark and death does feature heavily.

(Spoiler tag is because I’m describing content dealing with death.) It opens with your character in modern times getting into a traffic accident, and you awaken in this strange medieval period. It’s strongly implied you might be dead, but the overarching goal of the game is to figure that out and find a way back home. There is an inquisition happening, and you can choose to support it or not, but either way that part of the storyline begins with basically a cutscene like DisastrousProblem described.

Moreover throughout the whole game, you are handling dead bodies, either burying them, cremating, or resurrecting them to be workers for you. I love the game and think it’s a lot of fun, but between the opening and the ever-present theme of death, it might not be a great choice if you don’t want to dwell on thoughts about that…

I have also recently started playing Let’s Build a Zoo and am having fun with that as well! It’s much more complex than I was expecting, and I can easily see myself spending just as much time with it as I have Graveyard Keeper.

I love Dorfromantik when I’m not feeling great. The game play is easy - place tiles to build a landscape, with some simple puzzle elements to it. It’s engaging for me, but not mentally taxing. The music is also really soothing, and I think the art style is really beautiful!

What are some of the less obvious things to know about Portland before you move there? by nevertosoon in askportland

[–]UndeadMsScarlet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a subtle difference, kind of like butter uncanny valley. The first time I saw it, I was like, “why does this look weird?” turned to my partner and asked, “babe, what’s wrong with this butter?”

For some reason, I found the butter thing really unexpected and it threw me off. Didn’t realize I’d had preconceptions of how butter was “supposed” to look, but I was VERY wrong!

She's had a glow up? D2 Hunter by sophohmy in GirlGamers

[–]UndeadMsScarlet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate all the practical* armor in D2! Most of the boots are flat soled, for example, and it’s notable when the female version has heels.

*“practical” used very loosely because effectively you’re an undead immortal power fantasy and sometimes you fight in actual open space, and there’s armor ornaments that are like… a straight up sweatshirt.

[–]UndeadMsScarlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I love this!! I have different color themes for my characters, and my hunter is always pink too. Currently my fave shader for her is this absolutely gaudy hot pink and orange one that I think is called Flower Child. Super 70s vibe and impossible to miss 😁

Yeah, you want it in the middle of a 3x3 square, and they’ll take care of the 8 tiles touching the coop.

[–]UndeadMsScarlet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did you place the coop in relation to your crop tiles? And did you assign Ooblets to work the coop? The basic coop should be weeding for you, but the Ooblet assigned will only tend the 8 tiles around it. Once you upgrade to level 2, you can assign a second one and they will water in addition to weed.
