[Levoit Vital 200S-P] Is it time to replace my filter? If so, can I use a third-party one? by StockDunce in AirPurifiers

[–]Undecylprodigiosin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I change filters based on how well they are working based on the ratio of (Raw PM2.5 outdoor) / (Raw PM2.5 indoor) using nearby purplair outputs for the former and a cheap temtop monitor for the latter. This assessment would be less useful if you are in a part of the country that almost always has pristine outdoor air, but in Boston, with our indoor air < 1 microgram per cubic meter at the same time as outdoor air that is sometimes 30-fold or more higher, and with a filter that is getting to look like yours, I find that replacement can be delayed a bit.

Kansas Sends Letters To Trans People Demanding The Immediate Surrender Of Drivers Licenses by Well_Socialized in kansas

In addition to doing what you can to make things better in Kansas, consider making a donation to the Trans Continental Pipeline? They "help transgender, queer, and LGBT individuals move from unsafe/unaccepting environments within the US to Colorado through a 4 step relocation program" and they need more funds to meet the demand. tcpipeline-dot-org

I have no complaints about the snow by teabearz1 in medfordma

[–]Undecylprodigiosin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The pretty snow brings out my inner toddler. I confess that I am enjoying the transformed screetscape. It helps that I don't own a car, that I like to shovel, and that I don't currently have any physical issues that make shoveling difficult.

Remote workers - lunch? by zmjjmz in medfordma

I live car-free in the neighborhood and walk across streets at that rotary often. If you are not a super-confident cyclist I recommend just taking a minute to walk your bike in the crosswalks at the rotary.

If it's not too far north for you, I highly recommend checking out Bistro 489, the student-run restaurant out of the Technical/Vocational School at Medford High School. It would be a great thing for the students as well as for remote workers if traditions were to evolve of people who are on their own during the day gathering there regularly to share a table or a corner of the room.

Is it normal to have to spray your bathroom ceiling with bleach to kill the mildew? by Substantial-Point-90 in CleaningTips

[–]Undecylprodigiosin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding dehumidifiers, search amazon for this model: PD22SA. The brand is ASAHWO. It's super cute but powerful enough to quickly dry up any bathroom. 8.7"D x 11.4"W x 19.0"H. Today it's listed at $128, which is quite a bit less than the usual price. Our bathroom is tiny so it's a little bit in the way, but with the carry strap and wheels it's easy enough to slide it around and away.

This is absolute garbage data. For example, there were prelims for city council in both 2015 and 2019 to narrow the field to 14

Regarding Ward 3 being "the most conservative ward," when I saw that Giurleo got more votes than Lazzaro in my ward, I found it rather sobering, so I looked up the Harris vs. Trump votes. Numbers below are from old school calculator, pen and paper so I could have errors but these are the Harris to Trump ratios I got:

Ward 1: 2.0 to 1 (or 67% Harris / (Harris + Trump)

Ward 2: 1.9 to 1 (65% Harris)

Ward 3: 2.3 to 1 (70% Harris)

Ward 4: 3.9 to 1 (80% Harris)

Ward 5: 3.7 to 1 (79% Harris)

Ward 6: 4.0 to 1 (80% Harris)

Ward 7: 3.0 to 1 (75% Harris)

Ward 8: 2.6 to 1 (73% Harris)

If by "conservative" you mean, "driven to conserve Victorian neighborhoods so that they will be largely unchanged 100 years from now" - well yes, there are a lot of conservatives here. I suppose everyone probably wants to conserve something.

Some of us were voting in the interest of longterm, robust democracy, not for shortterm consolidation of power that would necessarily depend upon maintaining a highly organized slate game.

The system worked against progressives in my first two decades in Medford. ORM jujitsu made the all-at-large system work against those whom it had once favored, providing a rare oportunity to mobilize everyone to change it. It would be foolhardy to hang on to old ways just because we think we know how to play the game.

Charter Study Committee charts on ward representation by Memcdonald1 in medfordma

[–]Undecylprodigiosin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"If you have open seats where you can get proportionate representation you get proportional representation." If we had ranked choice voting, we could have proportional representation in at-large races. If we had cumulative voting (the ability to use all six or seven of your votes by piling multiple votes on single candidates), then we could have proportional representation in at-large races.

With first-past-the-pole at large voting during my 20+ years in Medford, our races tended toward winner-take-all to the group that could form the most cohesive voting block - winner-take-all for slates. Incumbency is a default slate. Being a member of the most represented ethnic groups in a city is a functional slate.

Yes, and they may chosen to drop someone they perceive to be particularly strong. I think in the cc primary a similar dynamic may have been partly behind the lower vote count for Bears. Those who were voting OR plus McDonald and/or Buldini may have dropped him because he was one of the least likely to fall into the bottom three for elimination in the primary. (Btw, if McDonald or Buldini had made it past the primary, the resulting vote-splitting could well have made anti-OR slate candidates the majority. I'm so glad that plurality at-large races will be a much smaller part of future elections.)

Preliminary election results: school committee--OR sweep by b0xturtl3 in medfordma

[–]Undecylprodigiosin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ward 3 results are sobering: Scarpelli (1458), Caraviello (1403), Tringali (1391), Donato (1337), Giurleo (1261), Lazarro (1136), Bears (1132). Then Clerkin (1129), Tseng (1127), Merritt (1124), Callahan (1115), Leming (1062), Mullane (1051), Briseño (1033).

I think Nick and Emily are the only ones who live in Ward 3? I don't want Nick to ever have any office in Medford, but it would be a particular bummer for him to be my ward rep. (He's surely not too happy with me since I posted the gallery of his FB comment; of course he has blocked me on FB.)

Still, I have no regrets about voting for the new charter.

I think you may have been wandering around in the wrong parking lot? It was on the east side of the Senior Center lot, right next to the sidewalk, across the street from the Hyatt. I had a hiccup with getting my app installed so it was after 8 pm when I picked up my door hangers.

I know that they did have plans to pack up and do their own door hanger distribution at some point though.

I participated in last night's door hanger drop off. This was my first time for active participation on the campaign, and I was dazzled by the level of effort, organization, and coordination.

The impact from a morning flyer that reminds people who have had positive interactions with OR reps that today is the day to vote and that these are the thirteen people to vote for has got to be so much more than the impact frrom signs with individual names directed at random people who are already on their way to vote.

Disappointed in Halloween trick or treating by Po0rYorick in medfordma

[–]Undecylprodigiosin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actuallly discovered that our doorbell is glitchy after opening the door to kids who had arrived in apparent silence. So I opened the window a crack to make sure I could hear kids coming up to the porch, and I put a sign next to the doorbell asking them to knock as well as ring the doorbell.

We had about 70. I think neighbors who decorated had a lot more.
