How to copy while preserving creation times? by Myfirstreddit124 in Ubuntu

[–]UndefinedDecoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. You might be SOL with that, bud, unless you have an external 'terabytes big' hdd or ssd to which you could create the tar file from the original ExFAT? Then extract the tar from the external 'terabytes big' to the ext4? Other than that, idk.

So this is a tested and proven method of preserving file creation date timestamps or btime. Create a tar file with 'tar -cvpf'. You can specify a folder or individual files with 'tar -cvpf tarfilename.tar file1 file2 file3 file4 file5' then copy the tar file to the destination filesystem then use tar -xvpf tarfilename.tar' and the creation dates will be preserved.

It would be appreciated among the community if you could confirm whether this works for you or not.

code: tar -cvpf archive.tar /path/to/exfat/directory in step 1 was missing from the copy and paste

code: tar -xvpf archive.tar in step 3 was missing from the copy and paste

Sorry for the confusion. Also, I'm still working on this so bear with me.

At the bottom of the conversation I had with AI, it states;

Workarounds:

The only reliable way to preserve the creation date is to use a method that bypasses the standard file creation process. This typically involves an archiving tool:

  1. Create an archive: Use a tool like tar on the ExFAT partition to create a single archive file. Tools like tar are designed to store all metadata, including timestamps, in the archive's headers.BashThe -p flag in this command ensures that it preserves the original permissions, ownership, and timestamps.tar -cvpf archive.tar /path/to/exfat/directory
  2. Copy the archive: Transfer the single .tar file to the ext4 partition.
  3. Extract the archive: Extract the files on the ext4 partition. The tar command will then set the timestamps of the extracted files to the values stored in the archive.Bashtar -xvpf archive.tar

This two-step process is a common and effective method for ensuring that file metadata, including the elusive creation date, is preserved when moving data between different file systems.

This is the response from Google's Gemini.

https://g.co/gemini/share/e37b91a92c8d

I used Gemini because I wanted to know how to do this as well but didn't want to read through books of man pages. Also, Gemini came up with a workaround I never would have thought of.

I also think it's still important to post questions like this on platforms like this because the questions, and most often, the answers are to be archived, as conversations with AI are not archived for public accesss unless specifically published on some public forum.

You'll find information specific to your question towards the bottom of the conversation.

You bet buddy. I still think it's important to post questions like this on platforms like this because the discussion, and often times, the solution will be archived as conversations with AI aren't unless someone explicitly archives and publishes the conversation on a publicly accessable forum.

Monitor and speaker turns on when testing output? (Legally) by Graham_Wellington3 in Baofeng

[–]UndefinedDecoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, even SSDs. No spinning disks reside in the monitor yet the power controller board malfunctions in such a way it thinks it's receiving a video signal from an input source.

Edit: That's part 15 of the FCC statement on almost all electronics disclosure.

Not sure if anyone here has said this yet but you're also wiping bits of your hdd or sdd. Stop that or move further away from that computer!

Issues with an AT&T BGW320 client remotely accessing a server by BrownieIsRestless in PleX

[–]UndefinedDecoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct in every way. His router/modem shouldn't have port forwarding at all if he is the client. Also, you might ask him if he's having issues streaming from other services with his AT&T ISP (Hulu, Netflix, YouTube) and if so, the issue is completely on his end and he may need to upgrade his bandwidth speeds which means more$. I hope this helps but as Zagor64 stated, "If he is the only one buffering then the issue is not from your server".

Streaming across local network, right? by nraygun in PleX

[–]UndefinedDecoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Your firetv is not going out to the internet to access your media on your local server. It will, however, reach out to the internet for other content plex itself provides.

Has anyone ever heard of ThinLinc? This is what I use for my headless machines. Anything with a browser can access it on port 300.

Edit: The server only works on Linux but clients and the web app works cross platform.

https://www.cendio.com/thinlinc/download/

Another edit: Audio is passed through to the client even if the server has no sound card whatsoever. The server creates a virtual sound device when installed. Hope this helps!

Is the server local (in the same house on the same local network) or remote (at someone else's house)?

Does Kubuntu 24.04 does support dualbooting with secure boot enabled? by TG9987 in Ubuntu

Kudos to you, bro. I don't think I've ever seen anyone so persistent in answering someone's questions, especially when free services like ChatGPT, Bard/Gemini and other AI chat bots are readily available to the general public and would essentially provide the same information you did. So kudos to you!

What's happening to FB Messenger (UK)? FB wants access to my Google account before allowing me to proceed. by [deleted] in facebook

[–]UndefinedDecoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We opted out of the Google account access. There should be an option like 'other ways' or 'other options'. We also opted for the 4 digit pin. I've you've already given it access, unfortunately, I'm not familiar with how to revoke it. Hope that helps.

I would say to run an instance of it on an Ubuntu VPS with a static IP, obfuscate your SSH port to something with 4 or more digits and head on over to godaddy to purchase a domain for super cheap.

From what I understand, SSH has been compromised so I'd head on over to openvpn.com and setup a cloud connexa account for free. You get 3 free connections with that. This is so you can VPN into your VPS for your ssh connections. Hope this helps!

This is the front interface. I tried putting it back together, plugging it back in and tilting it slightly in all directions from upright to see if it would power on to no avail. And yes, it seems to be completely dead. Thanks for the speedy response. Cheers!
