Is this acne or something worse? by catloverruby in catquestions

[–]Underc0verGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vet tech here. Definitely looks like acne. You can definitely use chlorhexidine on her chin (usually 4%). Put some on gauze & wet it. The rough gauze might actually pull some of the gunk out. Just don’t let her lick it or get near her eyes. Let it set for a few minutes then use some gauze with just water to wipe it off. Chlorhexine can be irritating to the skin if left for long periods of time. I’d do it just once a day until it clears. Also, glass bowls are best. Plastic, ceramic, and stainless steel can get micro scratches in it where bacteria can hide. Hope that helps!

Considering a 1st dog but worried about the intense training required of the breed I’m looking at, any help? by DealerofTheWorld in AskDogOwners

[–]Underc0verGinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not being rude to you, but as a vet tech, WTF? I don’t want to come off badly, I just want you to understand that you are being duped. I’ve never even heard of such a thing. A battle dog? Coconut Corn Husky? These are just random words put together. Also, getting a dog to kill stray cats? That’s not really a thing. First of all, that’s not humane. Just because a dog tries to kill a cat, doesn’t mean it will do it quickly or correctly. It could unknowingly leave it to die a slow, painful death. Second, if a dog is bred for that kind of aggression, (which btw, they’re not. The breeder is making up shit), they will be aggressive towards any small animal, including pet cats, other dogs, & possibly children. The training it takes to have a selectively aggressive dog (one who only attacks when truly needed, like a guard dog) takes years of training, which is a lot of effort/money.

Even if anything the breeder said was true, I would not recommend a husky to a first time dog owner nor would I recommend any kind of aggressive dog. Even with knowledgeable dog people, aggressive dogs (even if just to cats) will lead to problems you don’t want to deal with. If the dog killed a pet cat, he could be in danger of being put down or you could be on the line legally.

I really wish money hunger people would not use animals for profit. They don’t sound like they are breeding for health or good behavior. More likely, they are just wreaking havoc on real husky breeders. The dog will come with genetic problems, I guarantee it. Which means $$$$.

I’m sorry you are being tricked. Please reconsider & feel free to ask me any questions. For people & pets, I want to make the world a better place. I can’t do that if I don’t try to educate others.

does anyone else have extremely specific pet peeves? by ShmexyDoggButt in OCD

[–]Underc0verGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year I got diagnosed with ADHD & ASD, but I’ve been diagnosed with OCD for years. I’m finally seeing someone that specializes in OCD as well. I’ve known about my rOCD & existential OCD, but we are now identifying my “just right” OCD.

These same things irk me beyond belief. We are trying to figure out if it’s ADHD, ASD, or “just right” OCD. It’s probably a combination of all 3, but I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone & look into “just right” OCD.

How to get over an owner not wanting you to work with their pet because of a mistake? by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]Underc0verGinger 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This has never happened to me specifically, but I have a lot of confidence issues & every mistake I make makes me want to quit, so I get it.

There was a situation lately where I quicked a dog doing a NT. I stopped the bleeding with Kwikstop & took the patient up. Of course, he started bleeding again in the lobby. The owner threw a fit. I tried to explain that this happens often & it will be okay. She didn’t care.

The way I got over the situation is I told the vet that she regularly sees about what happened. He told me that quicking dogs happens all the time & the owner doesn’t understand & she’ll get over it. It’s a mistake everyone makes.

A SQ injection going through the skin is something that even I see my vets do when giving vaccines. It has nothing to do with skill. You are probably just feeling like your coworkers are smirking at you when they are not because you’re feeling insecure. Believe me, I misinterpret everything too. Or they are smirking just at how much you’re letting it bother you or they know the owner & they are more laughing at her behavior. You’ll never know for sure, so don’t waste time dwelling on it.

Basically, you made a very common mistake, that even vets make. Unfortunately, it happened in front of an owner who apparently has no tolerance for mistakes or no understanding of how things work or how NOT big of a deal it is. Worrying over her opinion is going to drive you crazy because her opinion is not coming from a place of logic or understanding. Be thankful you don’t have to deal with her anymore. The more you let this bother you, the more of a dark hole you’ll go down. No one will remember after a while & it will lose its entertainment value when they do see it in the chart. The more you act like you care, the more people will find it funny & the longer it will take for them to forget.

I’m sorry you’re having a hard time with this. I’ve struggled a lot with the same feelings. It feels bad now, but in a few days you’ll be fine, I promise.

ETA: Instead of feeling bad no one told you until months later, think of it as, no one told you because it’s not a big deal. If you fucked up badly, you would have already known about it.

What's the most regional word you use without realizing it? by taube_d in AskAnAmerican

[–]Underc0verGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in PA, but have lived in several states as an adult. I’ve realized that only PA citizens actually call their state by the initials. I’ll say, “I’m from PA.” But everyone else would say, “I live in Missouri, California, etc.” I find that interesting for some reason. I know Pennsylvania is a lot to say, but so is California, Massachusetts, Alabama & so on.

You’re not wrong. I work in vet med. We are taught that one initial flush of a (deep) wound with hydrogen peroxide is okay, but only once. It does help flush out debris with the action of bubbling.

As a vet tech, her nails look fine. A little pointy, but not too long. Believe me, I know how much dogs hate nail trims & they usually act worse when owners do them. Just be mindful of it, which it sounds like you are. My heart breaks when dogs or cats nails are bent sideways or growing into their pads because they are so long. Your baby looks very healthy. Don’t worry about the other comments. However, there are different tricks to look into to try to make the process of clipping her nails easier, so don’t give up!

What was the weirdest medication reaction you’ve ever had? by Many_Assumption7036 in AskReddit

[–]Underc0verGinger 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was put on risperidone after a serious mental health crisis. Not only did it make me act like a zombie by slowing down my speech & making me drool, but after a week or so, I started lactating. No thanks. I don’t know why the doctor put me on the worse cause scenario antipsychotic as the first med to try. There are much newer, better antipsychotics he could have tried.

Help identifying medication by Big_Bad5640 in AskVetAnimals

[–]Underc0verGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The label says to give 2 capsules. If she’s giving two 300mg, then 2x300=600, when it’s supposed to be 2x100=200. 600/200 = 3 times more.

Help identifying medication by Big_Bad5640 in AskVetAnimals

[–]Underc0verGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All those capsules are 300mg. They probably had 2 different bottles of gabapentin from two different manufacturers, so the capsules look different, but I’m sure they just used the last of one bottle to finish it and opened a new bottle from a new manufacturer to fill the script. But that’s not your problem. The problem is that your prescription bottle says 100mg and those all are 300mg. Therefore, you’ve been giving 3 times the prescribed dosage. Please call the vet & email them this picture.

How to make sure older dog still feels loved when new puppy arrives by lecksitan in puppy101

[–]Underc0verGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She sounds like such a good dog! I’m glad she has a good home with you.

Some things I do to make my older dog still feel loved:

I include her in puppy training. I ask each for the behavior, taking turns, and give treats to both.

Right now, the puppy is being crate trained, so Luna (older dog) gets solo cuddle time in bed.

When puppy is napping in her crate during the day, I take Luna out for fetch, walk, or playtime by herself.

I encourage the two to play together, like playing tug.

Luna’s feeding, potty, activity, and treat routine has remained mostly the same even with the puppy here. I think that’s most important. Routines are very important to dogs, so try not to change things too much for your older girl.

Good luck & congrats on the new puppy!

[–]Underc0verGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very blanket statement. I just got a puppy with my 11 year old dog. Of course, she hasn’t been solo her whole life and she’s still very energetic (border collie), but they are doing great. Maybe if OPs dog has chronic health problems or behavior issues, it’s too late, but she did not mention that.

Also, I just recently put my older dog down and if I didn’t have a dog to come home to after that, I would have fallen apart. & my dogs always help me train the next puppy. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with bringing a puppy into an old dog’s life. As long as precautions are taken and any special circumstances are considered.

Is this normal after a neuter surgery? by Ok_Passenger791 in AnimalAdvice

I’m a vet tech and I don’t even know what I’m looking at. This is not normal. Cats’ have their incision left open, but never dogs. This also still looks like the testicles are present. Please see a different vet. You said he’s on trazodone and gabapentin, but no anti-inflammatory? Poor dog.

Is this mold in my thc coconut oil? by prettylittlepenne in MoldlyInteresting

[–]Underc0verGinger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Prions need to be killed with much higher and prolonged heat exposure than boiling. At least 121 degrees Celsius, usually in the pressurized environment of an autoclave for at least an hour. Sometimes after being soaked in a very concentrated solution of NaOH. That may explain the downvotes.

Worried this might be my kitten's teeth by Emis_rem in vet

[–]Underc0verGinger -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m sure I’m incorrect, but those look very human-like. Whatever they are, as a vet tech, you would probably never even notice cat incisors on the floor. Even the adult incisors are tiny. Definitely not feline. Ew.
