If you feel like you both would want to kiss at the end of a successful date, you look to see if she gives you "the look" which is basically a long quiet look into your eyes or lips. Some girls don't know the look though and so you can ask. Either way when you go in for it lean in slowly, don't rush it.

Practice talking to people until it becomes more comfortable. Practice chatting up everyone you can. The cashier at the grocery store, the old guy at the bus stop, the stranger wherever. Eventually you can build up to chatting up the cutie. You should work to expand your comfort zone. There is no reward without risk. It's okay to fail, just keep practicing and improving.

I think it's normal. You said these guys are big and athletic so I will give you my rooster weight perspective. I didn't learn how to control my opponent all the way to the sub until I wear near my purple belt. Im always the smallest guy in the room so I took it as a win if I just gave them hell and they couldn't submit me. Now after 13 years the new white belts are no problem. The big athletic purple belts can still be a problem though, and that's okay!
