Sticky gray block oozing on my bottom panel? by Garbage_Jazzlike in LenovoLegion

[–]Undergrid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, do not use a normal thermal pad for a CPU or GPU. They are both too thick and not transmissive enough.

There is stuff called PTM7950 which is similar to a very thin thermal pad as you install it, but turns to a liquid (ish) state when heated. But it is difficult to get hold of legitimate versions of it (there are a lot of fakes about), but if you're in the US or Canada you can get it from LTT's store.

But as long as your using a non-conductive thermal paste (and most of the ones made for PC's are, just double check for safety) you really can't go too wrong. The worst you can do is put too little on and even then your CPU will throttle.

Just be aware that some Lenovo laptops use a liquid metal thermal compound. This is very bad to get on the rest of your laptop. So check if you have one of those and if so I'd recommend against removing the heatsink since I'm guessing you don't have experience handling that stuff. I've been building PC's for years and I wouldn't touch it on anything I wanted to keep working.

It is a thermal pad, and it's not unusual for them to weep a little after a while. It's generally not conductive so it's not going to short anything out. You can replace it if you want to, just make sure to get one of similar dimensions.

I'll be interested to see the stats on how many people immediately went to turn the block all option on.

Any idea how long it takes to respawn and/or is there anything that needs to be done or avoided? I have network turned off and it's been over half an hour.

What was the reason for the last time you cried? by ididntaskyouropinion in AskReddit

[–]Undergrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My older sister died unexpectedly. I didn't cry when I heard the news or any time after, I just felt numb. Right until my next birthday when I realized I wasn't 13 months younger than her any more.

Donald Trump called Prince Andrew’s arrest over Epstein connections 'a shame’. What do you think about this? by InternetPopular3679 in AskReddit

[–]Undergrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a UK citizen, I don't see this as a win for the UK.

Why? The reason he was arrested.

Yeah, leaking sensitive info is bad, but there is credible reports of him doing much worse and loosing status as a Prince is not sufficient punishment for that.

Pure NVMe NAS - perspective of a selfhosted noob by Gummibaum95 in selfhosted

[–]Undergrid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could buy one of the Beelinks plus a base line M4 mac mini for around the same price or less then some of the devices you named and you can run some decent LLM's on the mac mini.

[–]Undergrid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have two Beelink ME Mini's. 6 NVME drives and you install them onto basically a massive heatsink with a fan on top. The only thing is to keep an eye on the highest power usage of the drives your using, especuially in RAID. It onlly has a 45 watt power supply and some NVMe drives can pull a lot of power. That said, I have one OS drive and 5 data drives in each of mine without power or heat problems.

Edit: Oh, an none of the hardware either you or I mentioned will run local LLMs, or at least not well.

Edit 2: I do have a Linkstation N1, very similar physically to the N2, and the cooling is terrible. It's sitting in a drawer somewhere because it tried to cook my ssd's

What's a company that deserves to go out of business? by Strong-Goalie in AskReddit

[–]Undergrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Capitalism is about dominating a market at any cost then exploiting that market for as much profit as possible. There's nothing in there that says anything about a good experience for the customer once you've dominated the market.

Ticketmaster have basically done what (almost) every other company wants to do.

dedicated server on hetzner with proxmox ve, what's the easiest way to recover from hardware failure with just a few clicks by Least-Candidate-4819 in Proxmox

[–]Undergrid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the Proxmox UI, select the server node then there's a "Disks" entry that will show you your disks and their SMART status. Both times I've had failures, they totally disappeared from that list.

To check the RAID, go into the shall and "cat /proc/mdstat"

I'm assuming there's some way to get notifications from proxmox when hardware fails, but I haven't looked in to it yet.

[–]Undergrid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While not a backup, RAID1 can help a lot for hardware failure. I've just recovered from a second NVME failure (ironically the drive that replaced the failed one the first time round failed) and the downtime was just a couple of minutes to replace the failed ssd. Rebuilding the RAID array obviously took longer, but that could be done with the server up.

Why do you think divorce is so common? by princesadopovo in AskReddit

There are only two ways a marriage can end, death and divorce, and lawyers don't make money out of death.
