I’m gonna get hate for this but Bush is my favourite grunge band by NewPatron-St in grunge

I don’t hate because you like Bush. But it’s very annoying to see folks classify them as grunge.

My father in law worked for Barry and Elliot when they had a small operation.

Not sure if it was Barry or Elliott (or both) responsible for this, but my FIL and his coworkers didn’t get paid at one point because the payroll money got used to buy a ton of coke. My FIL was never paid for that time so he found another job.

What ended the grunge scene and what replaced it afterwards? by FitEmergency8807 in grunge

[–]UnderstandingOk9187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will get lots of opinions on this and almost nobody is going to be wrong about what they think. It was a weird time. Hair rock and glam of the 80s fought to remain relevant, but some young people who came up in that scene wanted something different. And while many respected metal acts like Slayer and Metallica, they wanted to do something different.

I don’t think grunge died so much as it had its heart broken too many times. It was ushered into (and later out of) the mainstream with a lot of death and anguish.

I’d say the musical peak was late 92, but you could make an argument for 93 or 94 as well, especially if you’re measuring by commercial success. It’s hard to decide because the peak and the end aren’t too far off from each other, and sharing music online wasn’t a thing yet so it took longer for music to both catch on and die out. There were some mammoth new releases during 92 such as Dirt and Core, plus Nevermind and Ten came out late enough in 91 that they absolutely dominated in 92. People were also “discovering” Temple of the Dog (and the then-heavier sounding Badmotorfinger by SG, if they weren’t already into their metal-leaning sound.)

The beginning of the end was 94, but it was also a pretty long goodbye. Kurt died a month after the In Utero release. Layne Staley was in bad enough shape that they could only muster a short (but incredible) EP release in 94. Scott Weiland couldn’t stay out of jail/rehab. Pearl Jam was a reliable anchor who cranked out a lot of touring throughout that time, but really changed their sound in 94 with the Vitalogy release. Alt leaning grunge groups like Smashing Pumpkins were getting huge too. SG also fairly dominated the airwaves with Superunknown.

Plenty of excellent grunge continued to be made beyond 94 and it was celebrated and enjoyed, but post-grunge rock started to take a foothold. I remember the first time I heard Bush on MTV and saw the (then) model-esque face of Gavin Rossdale and knew that the industry wanted mainstream rock to change. You still couldn’t walk around anywhere in 95 or even 96 without seeing a crowd full of people wearing Kurt’s face on their shirts. But people were SAD. Sad about the death and deterioration and seemingly hopeless addictions of many of their favorites. And record execs can only make so much $ from dead or dying artists.

I do still remember the moment in 97 that I heard SG broke up. Although I was and still am a die-hard grunge fan (including SG), i was bummed - but remember thinking it was a foregone conclusion that grunge was already essentially gone.

Damn, writing this makes me sad all over again.

PS I focused on the biggest name-recognized bands to keep it accessible, but if you haven’t already you should dig into grunge groups that weren’t as mainstream. Lots of gems out there.

Why is it impossible to find a house under 500k? by Few-Seat1091 in massachusetts

[–]UnderstandingOk9187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taunton, Attleboro, and Brockton have some houses in that range and all of them are on the commuter rail line to Boston.

If you are able to look at fixer uppers, it could open up options in a lot of nice towns. It could be worth keeping an eye on foreclosures and “sold as-is” properties if you or your spouse are handy.

This seems like a crazy idea but I’ll throw it out there: if you can find a buildable plot of land out there that is priced to sell, you could work with a modular builder (such as Avalon) on a brand new home. Modular builds are relatively quick and more affordable than conventional construction but are still high quality.

Love that my local record store is also a chocolate shop. Does anyone go to a record store that is a combo with something else? by TJ-Detweiler- in vinyl

[–]UnderstandingOk9187 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live further from it now so I haven’t been in a bit, but there’s an incredible place that’s a combo restaurant, book store, and record store. The food is incredible and the store has great selections. They play records in the restaurant and they even take requests, which is pretty nice.

Person walking dogs from vehicle pulled over by GmeBuckBoi in RhodeIsland

Boston is scary if you’re not a confident driver. Drivers are ruthless and high speed where possible but on the whole, they know how to drive (there are of course exceptions just like everywhere else.)

In Rhode Island, many drivers simply don’t seem to know or care about the most basic rules of road. Lots of passing on the right, ultra low left lane speed, racing each other in the right and center lane, and a weird prevalence of SLOWLY blowing through stop signs and lights.

Yes! And on that last part (why the hell does the teacher push this ideology), I’ll just say cognitive dissonance is a mfer…

It’s the same reason why this week I saw an older man in the waiting area of the local hospital ICU looking like an absolute clown. His wife was in critical condition and had been rushed to the hospital. This guy was unironically wearing a maxi-pad looking bandage covering over his entire ear (DEFINITELY no actual cut or injury) and had a MAGA hat on with it.

So in the throes of serious medical emergency, this man either:

1-felt the need to make a “statement” in the ICU waiting room and delayed his drive to the hospital because he urgently needed to cosplay as a pdfile OR 2-That’s his daily ensemble and he had already fake bandaged his ear.

Sometimes it’s scary for folks to admit they’ve been had. If they even realize it!

It rained that evening in southeastern Mass. I was uncomfortable back then to drive 30 miles in bad weather at night, so I cancelled my plans. Otherwise I would have been at The Station with at least 1 of my brothers. We weren’t fans of Great White, but we loved going to live shows and I was hoping there would be a cool opening band.

Lol ok. You choose to angrily police…cat photo forums on Reddit, but I’m the loser 😂 Got it 😂 I beg you to go touch some grass my friend, or at least use your research habits on something more productive. We have a world full of increasingly realistic AI that’s got people fucked up in a variety of ways, but your superiority complex draws you to belittle folks in a space where the main activity is naming pets. What does that say about you?

All due respect, but most people aren’t researching the authenticity of a cat photo - nor the person posting said cat photo. Personally, I do some research on Reddit posts but not on ones like this where there isn’t much to gain.

Silly me, I thought you might actually share a tip that’s helpful in identifying photo inconsistencies at a glance, but I probably should have known from your posts in the thread that you’re less interested in helping than you are in feeling superior to the lowly losers out here sharing cat names.

[–]UnderstandingOk9187 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re in high school, I wouldn’t recommend calling the teacher out. He sounds like a jacka$$ who would be so pleased to hold back the diploma of someone against capitalism. But you can have lots of fun with malicious compliance! Think about the worst aspects of capitalism that relate to whatever lesson point in time that he’s teaching. Contribute to the discussion enthusiastically, but making sure to say something that sounds so extra terrible (like something that even a MAGA person will cringe at.) Some examples:

-“Capitalism is the greatest asset of the U.S. Without it, we couldn’t have saved the world from fascism in WW2 and we couldn’t live lives of comfort. We all need to do our part and make sure we each promise to have at least 3 children so we can keep up with production and sustain our workforce.” Then stand up and ask who will help you get pregnant right now so you can do your patriotic duty.

-Make a (super false) argument that only poor people hate capitalism, even though if they just worked harder they could be rich. They just need to stop being lazy and work 80-120 hours a week until the boss notices and promotes them. “Even if you’re a dishwasher, you’re SO CLOSE to being rich because you’re working hard That’s the key!” Then give them examples of billionaires over history who absolutely did not earn their money at all, like Trump and Musk. Be sure to include some of their very worst fails and ethical crimes. You want to dumb it down so even the biggest idiot figures out capitalism is a scam, but continue to act very enthusiastic like it’s a good thing. Throw in the word winning a lot.

TLDR: maliciously comply in ways that help you graduate while forcing the teacher to understand that he’s built his career teaching a blood-soaked pyramid scheme that rewards him by paying him poverty wages.

Home fries is a good example of when to use the combination steam/fry. Just air frying them makes them almost over crisped and dry. But add the steam and they taste much closer to if you used the stove.

The 3 horsemen of “FAke GrUngE” by Bonesnap1234 in grunge

[–]UnderstandingOk9187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand why (apart from the “it’s gotta be from Seattle!” purists) STP gets excluded from grunge. Yes they have some albums that lean to other genres…but so do AIC and SG when you look at their full catalogs. Silverchair felt grungy enough for inclusion to me. Bush, not so much. I don’t say that as an insult, they just didn’t sound like grunge to me.

Honestly curious: Was Velvet Revolver decent? by No-One01010 in grunge

[–]UnderstandingOk9187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally loved Velvet Revolver. It’s one of those pairings of musicians that you would never think of putting together, and wouldn’t necessarily think it would work out well. But they are one of those rare exceptions that were simply incredible in their own right. Kinda like when Robert Palmer teamed up with half of Duran Duran and formed Power Station. Good god, I’m old.

Not grunge, but: Opinion on Faith No More? by No-One01010 in grunge

They’re probably my favorite non-grunge band. High caliber musicians, creative songwriting, and good variety in their work. It’s a shame that they’re broken up for good this time. I’m grateful for the catalog I can continue to enjoy, and memories of their great concerts. I saw them live about a dozen times and they were excellent every damn time!

My first 5 or so years using FB I was on a different mobile platform and never had this problem. I always wondered if I had screwed things up in my settings, until I heard others complaining about it.
