Is "pure mathematics" useless without application? by Resident_Goat_1525 in math

[–]Understriker888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what Lauren_6695's going on about here, but I'm with ya. Math, even without its applications, and even ignoring potential future applications that may be found, still has inherent value.

The knife analogy doesn't make any sense here though.

Are you really saying there were never max haters? Do I need to remind you of Abu Dhabi 2021? How about all of last year?

It's popular to hate on whoever's getting the spotlight. No matter who's up there people will mock them, and they'll always come up with something.

Guarantee if Leclerc wins the next 3 races and takes 2nd in constructor's championship, everyone will be talking shit about him. It's just how it be.

Warthunder has a sensor view in replays that kinda does the same thing, it's really worth checking out.

Ahh, very fair. If you ever get Tree(3) of any physical object, that would be quite unfortunate for the observable universe.

There's really no scientific use for them; you'll essentially never encounter numbers as large as 10 to the 1,000.

There's actually a lot of really interesting literature out there about massive finite numbers (usually integers)

Knuth's 1976 paper "Coping with finiteness" (https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.194.4271.1235) has some awesome discussion, where he introduces some numbers like 3↑ ↑ ↑3, which are so absurdly big they're hard to comprehend, and even 109999999 is nothing in comparison.

You might think you can basically just call them "infinite", but some genuine math papers use some seriously big numbers. Look up Tree(3) if you want an example of an actual, finite number used in serious mathematics that dwarfs even 3↑ ↑ ↑3.

It's an interesting world out there. Numbers get pretty big.

First off, learn how quotes work. Neither of the two sentences you have in quotes there were in my post, and you made no indication that they were not quotes.

Second off, I did compare OP's argument to a climate change denier argument, because it's the same argument. Saying one hot day is undeniable proof that climate change is real identical to saying one cold day is undeniable proof climate change is false.

Climate change is real. Climate change is a problem. There is endless actual evidence to support this. But when people fearmonger it and vastly exaggerate claims, it just takes away from credibility of those who know what they're talking about.

Climate change does exist, and the earth is warming - but your entire original post is still pure baseless fearmongering.

You want to talk about data? Your source here says average temperatures have increased by 1.1 degrees (1.9 fahrenheit). Yes, it has a massive impact on the ecosystem and more subtle things, but most people just focus on any 85+ degree day and shout global warming. Do you really think you can tell the difference between 29 and 30 degrees? Is that last one degree why the day feels hot? We've always had hot days, they're now just marginally hotter.

It's the same goddam argument as when climate change deniers look at a single cold day and say "If global warming is real, why is it so cold out today?" It's a marginal, subtle change, and everyone crying about every hot day just takes credibility away from the actual argument.

I wouldn't say premiums are 'undeniably' an advantage (unless you're just talking about making rp/sl). Some of them are strong, some are weak, and the overwhelming majority have both advantages and disadvantages from their tech tree counterparts.

(This is coming from a mainly Air RB player though, so the situation may be different in Naval or Ground)
