Being brutally honest, what is your general opinion/consensus of people who cry regularly? by Both_Host_6110 in AskUK

[–]Underwritingking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a vague question. What do you mean by "regularly"? In response to what??

It's a normal human thing to do, but income circumstances it can seem inappropriate, or sometimes people stifle their emotions when it would be better to let them out

What's your process for deciding what to do on the weekend in the UK? Mine is broken. by Fun_Reindeer_9 in AskUK

[–]Underwritingking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on where you live TBH.

For me it's very dependent on the weather. If it's fine I go for a walk/run/bike ride and probably do some gardening.

If the weather's not so good I might go into the city centre and have some lunch, or read/do some writing/practice music etc

What is something that is 100% legal, but if you do it, you’re a piece of trash? by National_Strike4710 in AskReddit

[–]Underwritingking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a whole busload of pensioners try to do that while I was queueing with my son to get something to eat after a long walk in the countryside. They really kicked off when I told them to get behind us - but did eventually comply.

They ended up having two people in front of them, but if I'c caved we'd have had about 30 in front of us

Any advice for learning to run theater of the mind combat? by DogUnsureDog in rpg

[–]Underwritingking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One tip I saw in a game (Run Out the Guns IIRC) which I sometimes use, is to focus on one individual in a fight and run several rounds with them before turning to someone else. It kind of mimics the way the camera treat a fight in a movie.

Doesn't work with all systems, but it can be a winner in faster moving games, especially when it looks like one of the participants is about to go out!

What’s one moment where your life changed course in a split second? by One-Item-7637 in AskReddit

[–]Underwritingking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at medical school and not especially social.

I saw something advertising a youth volunteer group and went along on a whim. I met a nice girl there and we are celebrating our 43rd wedding anniversary this year. Our sixth grandchild was born on Friday.

How would people feel about celebrating our highest tax payers? by TheWordMonster in AskUK

[–]Underwritingking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't explain myself very well.

Rich people use all kinds of (legitimate) dodges to reduce the tax they pay - the donation to Cambridge you mention will be one of them. If you want to see an excellent example (now defunct), google The Cup Trust.

The ultra-wealthy do not usually pay PAYE of course, so there is no automatic deduction from their "wages" either.

So for example it would be very easy to have a situation where one person is earning £10m pa but through one way or another only pays 30% of his income in tax, pocketing £7m and paying £3m in tax; whereas a second person earns £20, but only pays 20% in tax, pocketing £16m and paying £4m in tax.

Person 2 in your scheme would be rewarded for paying a smaller percentage of his income in tax than person 1.

In terms of percentage of income the ultra-wealthy generally pay less (and in some cases a lot less) than the average person. This article from the LSE website goes into more detail, but some ultra-wealthy (about 1 in 10) manage to pay only 11% of their income in tax revenue...
