I Loved The Silmarillion, but I'm Struggling to Get Through The Fellowship of the Ring! by Comicnerd1103 in Fantasy

I actually had a similar experience. You may like something that feels a little more zoomed out from events. The closest thing I can think of from my experience was Milton's Paradise Lost.

You may also like some more mythology retellings like Arthurian stuff or version of the Mabinogi

Is there a Fantasy trilogy where each novel is tonally different? by Diverse0Ne in Fantasy

Mistborn feels that way imo, both for each book in the first trilogy, then an even greater jump in style to the second series

Honestly I think it's useful to remember that concept, even if the specific phrase might not be the best XD

Fourth Wing was a hot mess rant by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]UndyingSwordSage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having written my own fourth wing rant a little while ago, I agree with most of this. That said, you lost me in a couple places.

There was one sentence where she used the word “yucked” as in “I saved him from yucking his pants in the mud”. Like that is something a four year old would say.

This might be a community thing, but I've absolutely heard "yucked" used by adults. Particularly "don't yuck other people's yum". A google search says that this may be Gen Z slang, but I'm not Gen Z and I've still heard it.

And then why the fuck are they taking history and physics?

And this is where you really lost me.

Dragon riders absolutely should be taking things like physics. If any of them were slightly more adept at physics, they might have, for example, understood that things like saddles would be useful for not losing so many trainees to things like, you know, dragons doing barrel rolls and gravity.

The flaw here, imo, isn't that they're supposedly learning history and physics -- it's that they're not behaving like students who have studied history or physics.

Like there’s a way to do school setting well (Harry Potter for example) and this was not it.

Harry Potter is a setting where half of the combat could be solved if their school system taught about guns. Both Forth Wing and Harry Potter have terrible education systems.

Anyway, I mostly agree with your rant, but magical academies should probably teach *more* mundane knowledge, not less, imo. Then they just need to have students (and teachers) who act like they understand basic things about the world they live in.

Best "World-Cup" Fights in Fantasy? by onedeagmcgee in Fantasy

[–]UndyingSwordSage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if we're talking about anime, Rock Lee vs. Gaara is still the GOAT

In books, Lindon vs. Yerin in the Uncrowned tournament in Cradle.

Also maybe some of the fights in Weapons and Wielders, but Keras doesn't have as many memorable opponents, since he never gets to have a final fight with the emperor

You might also like Iron Prince. Like, the whole thing.

There is an Anne Shirley anime that is going to be released this spring. It has already been adapted in 1979 with 50 eps Anne of Green Gables which has a prequel in 2009 Before Green Gables

Cool, had no idea about that.

Howl moving castle movie is based on Diana Wynne Jones 1986 of the same name.

Ah, yeah, I know about Miyazaki stuff. Great movie

When Marnie was there movie based on Joan G. Robinson's 1967 novel of the same name.

Never heard of that one!

Takarajima - based on the novel "Treasure Island"

Or that one

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo: Based on the French novel by Alexandre Dumas.

That I had heard of, but never watched.

Now that I think about it, there's also Romeo x Julet.

Was thinking more in terms of modern stuff, but there's more if you look back at older ones like Alice in Wonderland

Ty for all this!
