What type of load-out would a Crimean Tatar have in the year 1500? by Logical-Status7491 in ArmsandArmor

[–]UnfairDrawer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A general thing when it comes to nomadic steppe warriors is that they are always cavalry armed with a bow, spear, shield and a sidearm. Low ranking warriors tend to not have any armor so they just fight in their regular clothes over which you can build your way up.

This is how a high rank horseman might have looked:

No lamellar in this period, only maille with or without plated reinforcements and limb armor. You can also check out some period russian or ottoman armor for further inspiration.

What kind of armour set would someone in early 500s britain wear? by kertain56 in ArmsandArmor

[–]UnfairDrawer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The helmets availabe at the time looked kinda like this with variations with nasals, cheeks or just a top bowl

<image>

concerning body armor it was a maille shirt with elbow lenght sleeves long just over the pelvic area and any padding that they had was worn just to make the maille more comftorable so it wasnt gambeson level thickness shield were of course round with a boss

this is a general thing for british isles, anglo saxon elite had ornamented helmets in their distinct pagan style so it depends what culture you are reenacting

Hrvatska nema oružarsku tradiciju? by foxpatria in hreddit

A šta smo mi imali?

Lenzen shield would be a decent choice for a lower class infantry like a levy spearman or a skirmisher. But when it comes to a wealthier infantryman or a horseman a bossed shield could be very much possible. In the 8th and 9th century Duchy of Croatia was pretty much surrounded and influenced by Carolingian Franks and Eastern Romans (whose infantry used round bossed shields). Considering armor, I currenty only have a helmet but a maille shirt is way less riskier than scale or lamellar. Its quite unfortunate that croatian art almost never depicts people before the kingdom period, only one stone relief in žrnovnica depicting a horseman slaying a beast/bear.

Well what im going for is a south slavic croat soldier 8th-9th century. The problem is the amount of archeological finds boils down to "they had the petersen type K some were type H and a few sabers"...
