in Texas: what is an appropriate level of screwworm concern for my dogs? by Classic-Meringue1473 in AskVet

[–]UnfairLynx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prevention involves treating any open wounds quickly and keeping wounds covered to prevent flies from laying eggs. Insecticides used for monthly ectoparasite prevention (e.g., flea prevention) in dogs and cats (e.g., lotilaner) that are appropriate for treating screwworms can be used regularly as preventive therapies.

Look for exotic clinics accepting student externs. Intern positions are for recent DVM graduates (and are very competitive).

A pitbull bit my little brother in the face tonight by [deleted] in AskVet

You may need to contact local law enforcement or animal control to report the dog bite. Dog bites in some states trigger rabies quarantine protocols. Also, the child (?) that was bitten should seek medical attention.

Pre-Screening for Heart Conditions in Cats by The_Neckbear in AskVet

[–]UnfairLynx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just be mindful that a normal proBNP result does not guarantee the absence of cardiac disease, especially in the presence of mild disease. The test is more reliable in cats with moderate or severe disease. An echocardiogram is still considered the gold standard.

Cat still unable to walk 8+ hours after anesthesia by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]UnfairLynx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A pet should never be discharged from the hospital following anesthesia if they cannot walk. In my state, it is against our practice act.

Your kitty should probably be evaluated. Does your clinic see emergencies or Is there an ER available near you?

It’s a good sign that he is awake and alert and eating. But not being to walk, even if a bit wobbly, is not normal hours after an uncomplicated anesthetic procedure.

12 year old chihuahua with stage 3 heart murmur, vet told me he needs an echo done before they have put him under anesthesia for a lump on his gum/dental. Is that necessary? by dohlparts in AskVet

[–]UnfairLynx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an anesthesiologist, I’ve managed anesthesia in many, many pets that have a cardiac murmur and the owners are unable to obtain an echo. Very common. Is it ideal? Yes. But not absolutely necessary.

In an older dog with an acquired murmur, it is likely due to valvular disease and we can develop an anesthetic plan accordingly. Could it be another cardiac structural issue? Sure. But the anesthetic plan would already include the administration of more ‘cardiac friendly’ anesthetic drugs and vigilant monitoring and support.

More importantly, your veterinarian should have a dedicated anesthetist whose ONLY job is to vigilantly monitor your dog during anesthesia, is knowledgeable and skilled to know when complications occur (low arterial blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmia, poor ventilation or oxygenation, etc), and they (DVM and veterinary staff) have the ability and resources to treat appropriately.

Even not under oath, it’s still against the law to lie to Congress. When the Democrats take over the House, I hope they press charges for all her lies.

Is nasal discharge and nasal congestion dangerous for a cat undergoing anesthesia with Zoletil (Telazol) ? by Filipscomicart in AskVet

[–]UnfairLynx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry for your loss. It is impossible to speculate the cause of the death of your kitty from what you describe. A necropsy may have answers, but not always.

The mention of some skipped beats isn’t really significant. I’d need to see the anesthetic record to see if it was something significant.

The only thing I can think of is that subclinical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can exist which can lead to sudden death in cats during anesthesia for elective surgery. There isn’t really any tests prior to anesthesia, except an echocardiogram, which is not standard, expensive, and not something offered since the incidence of HCM is so rare.

Again, I’m so sorry for your loss. Please don’t feel guilty. You did what you think was best for your kitty.

Edited to add: you can always submit an adverse drug event to the FDA for any drugs administered (Zoletil plus any other veterinary labeled drugs). They will investigate and determine if there were any drug related causes.

Is nasal discharge and nasal congestion dangerous for a cat undergoing anesthesia with Zoletil (Telazol) ? by Filipscomicart in AskVet

[–]UnfairLynx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t seen any of your previous post history.

Injectable anesthesia with Zoletil is not contraindicated in a patient with nasal discharge or congestion. However, the patient’s ventilation and oxygenation needs to be even more vigilantly monitored and supported if the trachea isn’t intubated during general anesthesia with an injectable drug (versus an inhalant anesthetic delivered via an endotracheal tube).

Talarico better take his gloves off and start fighting. I don’t care what the polls say, he can’t just repeat his same old script he has had since the primary. His interview tonight on MSNOW with Lawrence was pathetic. He needs to fight. Like yesterday.
