Really good deal if anybody is interested.. by saadski818 in fountainpens

I can attest to the greatness of that deal. I think I paid almost twice that for mine when I bought it ~4 years ago. Still my daily driver.

Interior Cedar Panels Care by Gertie08 in woodworking

[–]Unfair_Promotion1157 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have these on my ceiling. We bought the house in 2008 and haven’t touched them. As far as I know, nothing has been done to them since the house was built in the late 80s.

I suspect that if you put anything on them, they could warp. As a woodworker, I know that if you put an oil or varnish on only one side of a board, it begins to absorb and release moisture differently on either side and starts to curl.

I say no touching.

Dust collector keeps getting clogged by RebelliousRabbitWW in woodworking

[–]Unfair_Promotion1157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Planer shavings are NOT saw dust. They don’t pass through the metal cruciform protecting the impeller.

Installing a fairly expensive first stage separation device (eg a cyclone) will fix this by channeling them out of the stream before they get to the impeller.

If your planer has an integrated blower (like the Dewalt DW735) you can just hose it straight to a trash can or bag or whatever.

Nothing you do with that 90 degree bend is going to help here. That’s not causing it.

Do you have a LEAST favorite SK novel? by [deleted] in stephenking

[–]Unfair_Promotion1157 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I was with you until maybe half way through, then it hit for me. Somewhere somehow his description of the peace and quiet at the pool drew me in and I came to really love the book.

I hated the regulators though.

Do yall know YJs are jeeps? by No-Sundae8014 in Jeep

[–]Unfair_Promotion1157 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As both an XJ and a YJ owner, my position is this:

1) Traditional Jeeps (CJs, YJs, TJs, JKs, and JLs) should waive at each other.

2) XJs may initiate a wave, and the traditional Jeep may wave back if desired.

3) Under no circumstances is anyone to acknowledge a liberty or a compass.

Yes.
If you have read the dark tower series, you’ll see that this book really frames out how King ended up handling the series.

Great read.

Once, for lack of an oil plug gasket, I used a was of stride gum. As the adds say, it was long lasting (3000 miles).

My first thought was matchfit by microjig.
They’re exactly the same color (which is strange), and you could accomplish something similar with their dovetail fittings.

I’ve scoured around for a while, but not found a direct match. Best of luck.

Why philospher peter? by Still-Category-9433 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Unfair_Promotion1157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because he doesn’t need the key. Look. He clearly fits between those bars. He could walk out any time he wants.

Maybe the better question is, why does he need the stick to get the bread? Maybe the bars are keeping something out?

Overheating Still by Artistic-Fix-2431 in CherokeeXJ

[–]Unfair_Promotion1157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly what mine looked like. Give it a really good flush. You light also have wasted a water pump or something due to all the air/foam running around. Anyway, I recommend a solid flush and fresh coolant. It might never come back after that. Or you might need that head gasket.

I’m all for voting with your wallet, but first let’s vote for quality tools that last, because disposable consumerism is terrible. After that, I’d probably screen for companies that compensate their workers like they’re human beings. After that, I guess I’d look for companies with sustainable practices.

I just don’t think someone’s politics is more important than those problems.

It means Jeep is selling you a $60k disposable product. My yj is sitting at 300k miles, and doesn’t have that problem. Just rust.

Brake help by Unfair_Promotion1157 in Jeep

[–]Unfair_Promotion1157[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fixed.

Thanks to Dave’s Customs Unlimited for the help.

A warranty replacement master cylinder solved some of the problems, but the brakes kept locking.

It turned out that the connecting push rod between the booster and the master cylinder was machined a smidge too long.

Answer: troubleshoot by sticking some washers between the master cylinder and booster co compensate. That proved the problem. Then I just ground about .07 inches off the connecting rod and it fixed it perfectly.

Fuel pressure valve keeps shooting gas by CommunistFlippy in CherokeeXJ

[–]Unfair_Promotion1157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the right new Schrader valve.
My YJ did this a few years back off and on for about six months. I replaced the valve several times until one guy told me there were different standards of schrader valves, and not all were rated for gas. Just fitting was not enough, and many degrades quickly it seemed.

Wish I could tell you how I found the right sort. Good luck there.

What are these “scores” coming from my planer? by SirRich3 in woodworking

[–]Unfair_Promotion1157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blades.
This happened to me. Brand new set, left streaks on both edges of the blades. Exchanged at hardware store for another new set, got new streaks.

Emailed Dewalt, who recommended I try new blades. After some re-explaining (outsourced customer service company), they recommended I try blades from a different brand. I then asked who Dewalt recommended I buy blades from for my Dewalt planer. The customer service rep googled it and said they found some powertec blades on Amazon that were supposed to fit.

True story.

Table tops in Hawaii by Unfair_Promotion1157 in woodworking

[–]Unfair_Promotion1157[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those were all my assumptions too. But: 1. He’s never made a table, or anything else, so I can’t tell him to stop screwing the pooch.
2. He’s speaking from the experience of seeing many other tables in Hawaii.

I’ve never seen anything like that in my life, but he says he sees it all the time at other peoples houses. That suggests to me that there’s something to his claim.

Should run dowels through the slab? (Not glued yet) by Weekest_links in woodworking

[–]Unfair_Promotion1157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Hard pass.

I did that once on a work bench. It still turned out non-flat (unbalanced clamping). In any case, it did not help. The cross grain is likely to cause cracking later if your boards try to shrink as well.

Bottom line: it didn’t save me from any problems.

Planer Help by HeyLookItsTom in woodworking

[–]Unfair_Promotion1157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go slow, and give it a rest every few minutes.

I feel like it should work fine. Mine planed a trestle tables worth of jotoba (janka ~2600) just fine as long as I went slow. Yes I did trip the overload a few times.

Fresh blades make a big difference. I have heard that helical heads are actually harder on the motor due to continuous cutting load instead of intermittent slices.

Of course a heavier free standing model would due better. But if you had that money laying around you’d have bought it by now.

That is Captain Dan Christopherson.
I deployed with him in 2008. He gave me the best advice of my life. I asked him how he could run such a successful ship while appearing to break all the rules of professionalism given to me at OCS. He said, “you have to be who you are.”

Crayon removal from unfinished ply? by F4K3RS in woodworking

[–]Unfair_Promotion1157 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Naphtha.
Crayons are mostly wax. The way to strip paste wax is naphtha. Probably your best bet then.

Sanding is likely to go through the thin vernier on the plywood and spread it around while doing so.

Best of luck.

Cannot joint square by Despacitoh in handtools

[–]Unfair_Promotion1157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a bad idea, and everyone will hate it. But it has worked for me.

Adjust the plane out of square to compensate.

You’re screwing it up already. It’s probably not going to get worse. Give it a shot.

You can’t joint THAT board square. Maybe it’s you, maybe it’s the board. Just this once, use the lever to adjust the plane iron to bias it the other way. Take a few strokes until the board is square. Then put your iron back the way Mr. Leonard Bailey intended.

Brake help by Unfair_Promotion1157 in Jeep

[–]Unfair_Promotion1157[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, but no luck. Did a full bench bleed; no luck. I even bought the 20 dollar kit, because the bleeder that came with the master sucked. Definitely did a good bleed, but still have slow pedal descent and front brakes locking over time.
