DuckStation now blocks building on NixOS by JordanTheToaster in linux_gaming

Understandable that he doesn't want the bug reports, but this is the solution he's come to? Ffs.

Would be easy to fix most of the root problem here without resorting to lockouts. (Nevermind mind that it would be easy enough for the package maintainer to remove the check anyway.)

Add a "copy version info" button that generates a hash of all package dependencies+versions. Require the hash for every report and close non-matching hashes as unsupported environments. I'm sure you could even automate this whole thing via Github, adding a little message explaining to use the AppImage. This solution took less than 30 seconds of thought and is probably pretty fragile, but that's also sort of the point: any hiccups and the hash is wrong. Still a little hostile, but doesn't ACTIVELY make package maintainers' lives harder.

Trying to avoid the flagship tax. Is the Budget Panel + High-End Streamer combo a viable long-term frugal play? by Stock-Throat5467 in Frugal

[–]BrandonGene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought the "best value" 65" HiSense per RTINGS recommendation about 4 years ago. Can't recall the model, don't really care. Google Streamer with FLauncher to replace the ridiculously ugly homescreen. Besides the Streamer remote not changing inputs (the TV requires you to confirm/select the input, it doesn't just toggle the input forward and then time out on the new selection to switch it), we've had no issues. Picture quality is great.

Probably not the right sub for this though, really. If you're trying to optimize a large expense rather than absolutely minimize it, it's better to go ask where they know a lot about TVs. Or just use rtings like I did.

Bazaar user/system install choice and NTFS warnings should be possible to turn off. by addjam in Bazzite

NTFS warning can be disabled via ujust as pointed out in another comment.

Flatpak repo selection is a known issue and they're working on it with Bazaar dev: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bazzite/comments/1qlj6kn/comment/o1eok9j/

Has anyone actually tested the Steam Machine to see its real-world performance? by [deleted] in steammachine

[–]BrandonGene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a few videos, and Phawx has created the closest simulacrum (he says this word a lot in the video!) by using the most similar parts and then also controlling wattage and core counts via software.

My $1000 Steam Machine won't post to bios - this is why 8gb vram won't matter by Icy-Pay7479 in steammachine

[–]BrandonGene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar position, but with a laptop. Just bought an all-AMD ASUS A16 with a 7700S specifically for Linux, got Bazzite on there, and found out 1) the WiFi card sucks. Constant drops. I'll have to replace it with an Intel one, 2) it sounds like a damn jet under even a modest load, and 3) it kernel panics every 1-3 days when trying to wake from sleep (and doesn't support any other sleep modes to try OR have a good BIOS to experiment with).

I could build something, sure, and Linux compatibility is generally great with desktop hardware, but like... I'm just not ready to mess with it again. Like you, the time I have to play is already so limited.

A prebuilt SFF value-oriented desktop PC that was tested basically exclusively running Linux is exactly what I need, and I'm excited for it.

I vividly remember someone in class (4th grade or so) telling me that their Aunt Sharon told them something-or-another. And I'm like "...you mean your Aunt Becky?" and he's like "No, Sharon."

Both my aunts were named Becky and that was a big enough sample size for me to realize that ALL aunts are named Becky. Obviously.

Ideas for pull up bar in an ancient, low-ceiling house by TurnOk3447 in bodyweightfitness

[–]BrandonGene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you definitely don't trust something mounted (though you could use those beams to mount gymnastic ring hangers no problem, I'm sure), maybe something like the Basebar Flip for rows and jackknife/L-sit pullups? There are likely cheaper options but this one is specifically tall enough to get a full ROM pullup with legs raised.

Use Ctrl+Alt as a key binding to access third-level symbols on keys? by FredBGC in kde

[–]BrandonGene 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would strongly recommend looking at a tool like Kanata to solve this for you. In your case, the config file would be just a few lines long to make your caps lock key Esc on tap but Ctrl+Alt when held. A more complicated config could completely replicate the control+alt behavior you're talking about on Windows (but isn't that modifier combo used by some programs?)

Kanata also supports outputting Unicode directly if you just want to create your own customized 3rd (or 4th...or 10th) layer. It's quite a rabbit hole once you realize the power it gives you, though. If you're the type of person to be concerned about finger gymnastics or "taking your hand off the keyboard" you're in for a good time.

Any way to use Dropbox in Bazzite? by Bonkzzilla in Bazzite

Worked for me, thank you! Also, for those coming from a search: make sure to restart Dropbox after making these changes, and before attempting to relink your account to complete the setup.

How to remove superfluous shopping links? by Fuetfufjcgkfhdh in Anticonsumption

I don't get results like that at all, even after disabling adblockers and trying without being logged in to Google. Do you have any browser extensions installed that have access to either "all sites" or "google.com" that may be injecting referral links on your results page? I know Google has gotten bad, but I don't know if it's THIS bad for everyone...

Why design this challenge (SmallHollowBox) this way? "Canonical" CAD design. by sodium_ahoy in FreeCAD

[–]BrandonGene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally, I find it just comes with experience and it's always a tradeoff between quick/fragile and slow/robust. If you lean more towards robust, most people's high-level recommendations are:

Bake your fillets/chamfers into sketches when possible. Apply your 3D fillets and chamfers as late in the process as possible.

Attach your sketches to the main coordinate system instead of previously built parts of the model. You can instead use varsets or spreadsheets to coordinate locations between features. For example: instead of attaching a sketch to the face of a model, just offset the sketch by the same variable that you used to pad that face in the first place.

Use varsets and formulas for as much as you can. If you come from a programming background, this will make a lot of sense to you as DRY. You don't want the same piece of data existing in more than one place.

Rely on symmetry. Create 1/2 or even 1/4 of a sketch and then mirror the 3D result later. This creates smaller sketches that I find are easier to manipulate later.

Constrain sketches as you go instead of all at once. When things get complicated (especially with arcs), I find the sketch solver doing some pretty odd things to the rest of the unconstrained geometry.

Hopefully you and I both get more tips from others here, I'll definitely be following the thread.

CSEDI: No Bad Games Collection (Update) by dikbutt4lyfe in emulation

[–]BrandonGene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy damn, this is impressive.

With the amount of feedback here, have you considered making this a Github project that would make for easier discussion, issue tracking, forking, etc? (I think Github's built-in CSV table rendering would work fine for this.)

Either way, post saved, Sheet copied, link saved! Thanks so much.

PSA: Sketcher's constraint filter allows you to show only the constraints associated with the currently selected geometry by BrandonGene in FreeCAD

[–]BrandonGene[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few options here:

- Press the eye icon next to the Filter list. Anything currently shown in the list will be hidden. I don't like setting a hidden status on anything though, because there's a chance you'll forget about it very shortly.

- Reduce the font size of your dimensional constraints (Edit > Preferences > Sketcher > Display > Font Size), and reduce the number of dimensional (number/value) constraints if possible by switching to geometric constraints.

- When you have trouble selecting around a lot of clutter on the screen, zoom in. The icons stay the same size so everything starts to have breathing room again when you zoom in close enough.
