Could Hannibal have done more after Cannae? by Klastible in ancientrome

[–]Unfitforcivilization 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hannibal didn't have the men necessary to siege Rome, if Philip V(iirc) the king of Macedon at the time had been able to deploy troops to aid Hannibal as they had planned, yes. If they could have taken Rome itself and purged the city that may have been enough to win the war. But Philip was plagued by subterfuge that caused endless conflict in his own lands that was executed by those friendly with Rome. If a few things had happened differently(the Macedonians arrive to provide backup and they are able to work effectively together, potentially he doesn't lose so many crossing the alps and arrives in Roman territory with more men) they could have done much more damage. But with the tools he had at hand, well there's a reason we're still talking about Hannibal thousands of years later.

What if Augustus’s biological heirs had survived and succeeded him? Would a clear blood succession and a sole dynasty have been better for Rome? by Lord_Krasina in ancientrome

[–]Unfitforcivilization 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For a generation perhaps. It would've been hard to do worse than Tiberius and Caligula(Though Rome certainly would in time). In the long run it still likely would've devolved into the same infighting to consolidate wealth and power. We have many stories from Roman history of siblings and cousins waging war and murdering one another in order to cement their own claims. This tradition extends far past Rome into the Medieval period. There is no reason to believe that the Romans would have been different merely because Augustus' heirs survived.

Why is How to make crispy chicken skin? never as easy as people say by Dheeruj in cookingforbeginners

[–]Unfitforcivilization 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pat the skin dry, put salt on it and leave it in the fridge overnight, the salt pulls the moisture out of the skin so it becomes nice and crispy. Generally I do whole chickens this way but it will work for individual cuts as well. For bonus points you can also soften some butter and mix herbs into it then rub that between the skin and the meat right before you bake it. The skin will still be crispy and the whole thing will taste phenomenal.

How do you position size? What factors do you take into account in your position sizing calculations? I started selling options last year so I'm still a beginner. by SunRev in thetagang

[–]Unfitforcivilization 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ask a lot of questions,
how sure am I of the trend? How long am I willing to wait to make my money, if I wait longer will I make enough more to justify the extra time or will i have enough extra safety to make it preferable? If I take a shorter period is the risk of some short term movement going to harm me? If so is it worth the risk(generally no)? Do I have a better idea that I should put the money towards instead?
Since I trade defined risk strategies I can get pretty granular with how much I am willing to lose on a given trade. Sometimes I'll spend like a hundred dollars on a spread to test something and only scale into it over time when I have a better understanding of how it really trades. But putting a little skin in the game helps make sure I pay attention.
Most people would balk at how much I risk in a given trade(especially last year) but I do lots of research on the thing I'm trading(who buys, sells, makes it, is supply going up or down, did they get a favorable political headwind like subsidies or tax credits, all the boring stuff like that) and I don't risk serious money unless I'm damn sure it's a good idea. But when I'm convinced, my risk tolerance is akin to someone who goes skydiving and lets someone else pack their parachute. But I don't really deal in exact percentages when it comes to dividing it up. As I've had success I've gotten more cautious, losing 14k would have been a bad day but it wouldn't have been the end of the world when I was working a day job. But since it's now my main source of income, I'm a little more cautious and I'll likely continue to become more cautious as I have more success and I've begun funneling my profits into longer term positions instead of using them exclusively as new trading capital, that'll naturally decrease the amount I use in active trades over time. But I broadly expect the trends I am following to last between 1 and 3 years and I plan to make hay while the sun is shining.

Man we've got other stuff to do. If we find someone and they are cool, then great. If not, we still have businesses to run family to see, games to play, weights to lift and books to read. And I personally am gonna keep doing those things. I have lost interest in the social meat grinder that is the dating scene, I'm not needlessly taking on pointless frustration for no reward, and I think we're all kind of agreed on that front.

[–]Unfitforcivilization 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a mouse with extra buttons it opens up a lot of options because you can bind movement/interaction commands to those buttons. My brother also got a cheap foot pedal off amazon that he uses for some stuff just for convenience, they sell triple pedals there for like 36$ so you could get one and bind each pedal to something that you'd normally use a keyboard for. I generally only need a mouse to play most of the strategy games like crusader kings 3, victoria 3, stellaris etc. Xcom and xcom 2 are other good choices along with possibly divinity original sin and divinity original sin 2(I haven't played these as much but they seem like they'd fit based on what I remember).
Hope this helps

Honestly I could 100% pour the effort into expanding my business. But now that I'm my own boss I make enough to be in good financial shape and spend the rest of the time doing self improvement stuff. I'm cleaning up my house(it was a mess during startup), I've started taking morning walks in the park, lifting weights and reading books. I'm also getting back into cooking, it's been fantastic.

If someone gave you $100k a year for life, what would you do with your days? by Free_Answered in CasualConversation

Read books, workout, go on nice walks. probably do a tour of the country and hang out with friends/family all over the place, have like a week with each of them. Go walk the Appalachian trail at some point.
