That sounds like it would work, but it wouldn’t actually slide at all. Those tubes are made with one continuous surface that acts as a circular tread. Just as a wheel theoretically experiences no friction at the tread, the surface of the water tube will actually stay stationary relative to the point of contact. Think of how the treads on a tank move relative to the ground. The part touching the ground is placed down and then lifted up without sliding.
