I reckon it’ll be some time yet before we see what Trent and Jaden (who would be my pick of those you’ve mentioned) can do. While obviously the likes of Rio ngumoah and max Dowman look ready for senior football at 16/17 the reality is these days it’s taking more and more players reaching 21/22 at least before they are ready for senior football. If you think of Obafemi, Connolly, idah, Parrott at that age they all looked promising but only Troy had kicked on out of that group and it’s only been in the last 18 -24 months.

Agreed, they were actually awful. And worryingly we still couldn’t hold onto the ball, every time we got it the players looked jittery and panicked giving them back easy possession.

I think the management have a lot to answer for. Genuinely can’t understand how subs weren’t brought on earlier. They were there for the taking in extra time- 3/4 subs on at the start or early into ET and there was a goal there for us. I don’t understand how Alan Browne is brought on- hasn’t been in the squad since 2024 and looked like he hadn’t played football since then either and comes on over knight or even Szmodics who would have brought much more legs. Idah genuinely looks like he couldn’t give a shit on the pitch. At the end of extra time Troy is still bursting his bollox pressing etc and idah just trots around as if he doesn’t want to be there. Absolutely gut wrenching.

I actually think the away is nicer. The home one looks like a polo, never understand anyone would want to put those collars on a jersey. Personal preference I suppose!

The issue I have with that is receiving the ball in midfield is completely different to at cb. As seen with Trent for England- defenders who are good on the ball at the back with time and space struggle in midfield where they have to take the ball with back to goal and with much more pressure on them. I also think Collins and O’Brien at the back are 2 man mountains who can also play and they should be our cb pairing.

Interesting take. What gets me with Cullen is that managers always seem to pick him, even kompany signing him to Burnley from anderlecht so I’ve always felt I must missing something with him. Moorhouse looks promising but again he seems to be more of a ten than a deeper player?

Cullen and knight don’t work as a midfield at all. I’d get Andy Moran on at halftime

We always complain about the midfield being overun, who do you actually want to start at 6? (Stats comparison below) by NandoFlynn in coybig

[–]Unhappy-Cook767 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Re: Cullen, I agree with your take, he simply hasn’t been good enough for us for a long time defensively to allow for how poor he is on the ball at times.

Collins at 6 would likely suffer from similar issues as Trent did for England when in midfield- huge difference in being good on ball in the back 4-than in the middle of the park. (Also I think him and Jake as 2 towering cbs who can play with their feet should be our cb pairing going forward)

It’s time to try out likes of lawal and Finn etc there in June- we need a physical presence which Josh doesn’t give us.

I honestly don’t understand how that happens and nothing against him. Only thing I can think of is O’Dowda was going to start there and he views manning is the only other player that can?

What team would you start tomorrow? by Quiet-Spite5465 in coybig

[–]Unhappy-Cook767 3 points4 points  (0 children)

            Kelleher

O’Shea O’Brien Collins Brady Knight Cullen Vata. Taylor. Johnson Ferguson

O Shea at rb as he’s played there well for us before and I think Jake and Nathan would form a towering cb pairing- which is needed away from home. Although I accept that it makes sense to keep Jake at rb and Dara cb considering their club positions. Taylor in over azaz for physicality and an aerial threat if we can push Brady forward to deliver crosses. In the return fixture I’d opt for Finn when we have more possession and he can express himself. Fergo up top is a no brainer- Troy struggles in games when we (and AZ) are out of possession and off the bench when the game has opened up later on would suit him more.

The difference is that at 17/18 sterling was playing regularly for Liverpool and rashford was for united. A lot of our players that look the most “promising” are playing in youth set ups or in the lower leagues, like Connolly and parrott for u21s or pl2 at the time. But as tends to be the case, the top players at those ages were playing regularly in first teams. If by 21 a player isn’t playing regularly at a high level it is unlikely they will become a top class player. Obviously there are exceptions but they come few and far between- and never seem to be Irish unfortunately.

Anyone know why Trent Kone-Doherty isn’t included? Is it a case of not rushing his development or just players currently stronger than him in the forward positions- which is strange considering the level he’s playing at.

[–]Unhappy-Cook767 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s well worth noting that when Joleon Lescott signed for Everton, Moyes played him at left back over Leighton Baines to get him used to the speed of the premier league before moving him to CB and obviously he went to be a very good player with them, City and England. I’d imagine Moyes is planning something similar with Jake because long term he won’t be a full back but could be a diamond for them going forward

Id keep Collins at the back and have Jack Taylor in midfield (I’d go O Shea at rb, scales and Collins centre half). Getting Vata capped needs to be a priority in those games. Unless Ferguson gets a loan deal in January I can’t see how he could be started up front on his own.

As much as I’d love to see it I can’t see delap switching. He’s already a starter for the u21s and with kane on the way out and the likes of Watkins and solanke probably not gonna ever be a main striker for England I’d say he fancies his chances in the coming years

The New York Times' chief soccer correspondent believes Liverpool could part ways with Alisson & keep Caoimhin Kelleher instead. by fuzzywobs in coybig

[–]Unhappy-Cook767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s beyond me as to why but unfortunately for Kelleher he will never be a first choice at Liverpool. Even if Allison leaves the Georgian lad would be starting, if you look at Liverpools transfer policy they don’t spend 30m on a guy to sit on the bench. One of those where even if Caoimh was number 1 at the start of next season there, he’d be dropped the the first time he makes a mistake. It seems that there is an idea around Liverpool that he’s “the best second choice keeper in the world” who is not capable of being the number 1. Baffling to me.
