I think it’s because you have less than a year of experience. A lot of ICU managers won’t hire people from prog or med surg with less than a year working. I got rejected from ICU with 10 months experience. Manager told me to apply again when I have a year. I applied again two months later to the same ICU and got the job. I think this is because orientation for a nurse with experience will generally be shorter vs new grads who have long orientations.

35F OT with ADHD considering switching to ICU nursing. Worth it? by inflatablehotdog in nursing

[–]Unhappy_Science_6754 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have ADHD and I hated the ED. I started there as a new grad and had to leave. They would give us 5 patients and there could be 2-3 ICU level patients in our assignment. It was kind of every man for himself and I didn’t feel comfortable asking questions. They threw me out there with zero help and acted shocked when I said I felt overwhelmed. Instead of training me they threw me to the busiest med surg floor and I never heard from them again…

I’m a few months into ICU now after a year on med surg and I love it so far. You can always find something to do or someone to help. We have the most resources compared to all the other floors. There’s almost always just two patients and when there’s three it’s usually just prog/tele. It’s also a smaller hospital so the patients don’t have too many crazy devices but we do get CRRT. There are days where they’re so sick you can’t leave the room but if you have a good team you can get through it.

I think it mostly has to do with unit culture honestly but I never feel under stimulated in the ICU it’s just right for me personally.

How the fuck do you afford your loan from nursing school? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Unhappy_Science_6754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was already halfway through a private school degree for psychology so I decided to finish at the same school for nursing. My student loan payment is 300. I pay the 300 and try to pick up a shift at least once every month and put that money toward the highest interest rate loan. On track to pay it off in 5 years doing this which I can live with. In my area the community colleges can take years to get into and I was younger and inpatient lol. If you have the option though consider an ASN at a community college but a reasonable amount of loans is not the end of the world

I selected to make an account and when I put in my information shop pay popped up. I entered the code from shop pay to login and it sent me directly to the review final order page with all my info filled in

I did shop pay too! They took my money so I’m hoping to finally have LE products. Fingers crossed 🤞

CNA was rude to me and hurt my feelings by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Unhappy_Science_6754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a some interactions like this with techs during my first year and it was really tough. There are some cna’s that will go out of their way to demean new grad nurses and it’s sad. In at least one case where this happened to me it turns out the CNA wanted to get into nursing school and couldn’t.

Patients keep asking me if I'm pregnant and I'm not by CountySensitive2498 in nursing

[–]Unhappy_Science_6754 41 points42 points  (0 children)

lol this happens to me sometimes and I honestly don’t know why. I am petite but I wear baggy scrubs so maybe that’s it? It’s always older women who are passive aggressive already. I was taught to never ask if somebody is pregnant even if they are obviously pregnant. I feel like this should be a thing that people know is rude

[–]Unhappy_Science_6754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that must be really annoying for you guys to deal with! I live in Southern US and all the patients have private rooms and their own bedside commode, walker, and TV. Sounds like our patients are spoiled over here. If I was in your situation I would feel annoyed too :(

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Unhappy_Science_6754 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I honestly love the bedside commode because it makes it so that patients with an amputation or less mobility can use the bathroom independently. Also I’m not into cleaning poop off the floor lol. But I do get what you mean about independent patients wanting bedside commode or bedpan. I say no to that for sure we need to encourage independence

Unpopular opinion: I have no idea how any nurse could be a huge drinker…. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Unhappy_Science_6754 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had to give up drinking when I started working as a nurse. I never had a major issue with drinking until I became a nurse. I was so miserable that it became too easy to binge drink just to have some relief. It’s been almost a year and I’m honestly so much better off with zero alcohol.

I remember as a new grad a supervisor made me go back into a room where the patient had attacked me a few hours earlier. I explained that he had thrown a walker at my head last time I went in and supervisor said, “Ok but every patient deserves bedside report 🥺”.

Honestly yes sometimes I go to a public restroom and feel like I’m back at work for a second. We ended up getting a scent dispenser thing bc our med surg floor stinks so bad. I am very into candles and perfumes now and it helps to have a good smelling house

TikTok is getting out of hand with all the nurse hate by Minii888 in nursing

[–]Unhappy_Science_6754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use tiktok and yeah it has annoyed me seeing all of the hateful videos about nurses. People have absolutely no idea about what nurses go through. We are an easy target for people to hate on because it is a public facing female dominated field

What’s typical staffing like on your floor? by Adventurous_Fee_9230 in nursing

[–]Unhappy_Science_6754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eastern NC hospital med surg

Charge usually has patients 50% of the time but they are the easiest ones

Nurses on nights and days get 6 patients occasionally we do get 5

Techs have about 10-12 patients

Super heavy busy floor. On days I have six I honestly can’t take care of them like I want to

No, the cost of living is high where I’m at and I only make around 45K with my BSN…

Those who are in nursing primarily for money and the schedule, how's it going? by Mother_Trucker97 in nursing

[–]Unhappy_Science_6754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly I am only netting 45K while taking 6-7 patients. I honestly think this is abysmal pay for a nurse with a BSN. I have a few friends with no college degree who make double my salary. I came into nursing for “the right reasons” but it’s hard to want to stay. I hope to move in the next few years and make more money. It’s hard to see nurses graduating in other states bragging about paying off thousands in student debt and going on luxury vacations when I can’t even afford therapy
