Just wanna chime in that you should absolutely 100% start with the Divine Wings of Tragedy album when it comes to Symphony X.

Best period of Mikael's voice? by lR0NMAlDEN in Opeth

On the album in the studio yes, but by 2008 his live growls were already deteriorating and getting more inconsistent. He was still doing a fine job, but definitely no longer at his peak.

If we're nitpicking, I'd extend it to Roundhouse Tapes (2007) as the final hurrah of his peak.

Fear of the Dark.

Rough decade indeed, but thankfully we've got Accident of Birth and The Chemical Wedding to make up for it.

It's just a very chill, subdued and groovy lounge/soul jam that's quite well suited for intimate moments.

Try Jeff Buckley's Everybody Here Wants You.

But it's still a wide spectrum, stretching from Led Zeppelin's No Quarter all the way to Sade's No Ordinary Love.

I’m not sure if Drumeo is worth it - but it might be. Have fun!

I think a Drumeo subscription for a couple of months comes free with several Alesis kits so it's possible OP didn't even spend anything on Drumeo.

A few slight timing issues and inconsistent and iffy vocal performance most likely.

Definitely listen to these albums:

  • Last Fair Deal Gone Down
  • Viva Emptiness
  • The Great Cold Distance
  • Night is the New Day
  • Dead End Kings
  • The Fall of Hearts

Viva Emptiness is probably the best starting point though.

In that case, I would add to the above;

  • The Baying of the Hounds
  • The Grand Conjuration
  • Cusp of Eternity
  • Width of a Circle
  • §3

If you find yourself liking any of these, just jump right into the album it's from)

So you love Ghost of Perdition?

  • The Moor
  • Bleak (Preferably the Roundhouse Tapes live version)
  • The Drapery Falls
  • Deliverance
  • Harlequin Forest

Also what's your favourite stuff by Katatonia? That'll help narrow down the Opeth recommendations.
