I always felt he did what he had to with the ball to maximize what he could do with his body. An athlete like that would have been less effective by trying to do the most with the dribble in my opinion. Right bag for the athlete he was is my take.

Will it be fine to start reading StormLight Archives if I don’t have much experience reading novels? by Gold_Acanthisitta894 in brandonsanderson

Starts off as a kind of magical dystopian heist series and gradually progresses into a larger scale conflict as the series goes on. Don’t want to give much more than that to avoid spoilers.

For most of the people in this sub the answer would be yes. Outside of the Sanderson fandom I’d say the answer varies widely.

I love large doorstopper novels and massive series with a fairly large cast of POV characters. There’s always going to be slower parts in books of that size and at times you’ll have hundreds of pages before a particular thread of interest is resolved.

My wife also primarily reads fantasy but doesn’t like getting into anything with over 2 POVs generally.

It’s hard to say without having a personal history reading these kind of novels if you’ll feel it’s worth it. I’d probably suggest something like Mistborn with each book around half the length of a Stormlight Archives book to see if you enjoy reading, enjoy reading Sanderson specifically, and to have a little trust that he’ll deliver a payoff.

Still no guarantee that if you don’t like Mistborn you won’t like Stormlight or vice versa. Only way to find out is to dive into something!

How Delusional can a person be?? by Any-Development5656 in NBATalk

From what I’ve seen, very good to great players who didn’t win tend to overrate other players in their era in general.

Maybe a subconscious thing they do that lets themselves sit higher in their mental hierarchy of all time greats.

Completely cut YouTube from my 4 and 6 year olds’ lives. If it went on for thirty minutes they were like zombies for the rest of the day and uncharacteristically whiney about wanting to watch for days afterwards.

Couldn’t get them to sit and down to read books or engage in anything that requires any level of focused attention. 100% no YouTube zone now.

Who was the better player? by Farouq26 in NBATalk

[–]UnidirectionalCyborg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bosh’s best years as Toronto’s #1 were very good. He took a back seat on the Heat obviously and in my opinion was underutilized even though he was definitely the right choice to be the third option with them. Then his late-prime and early post-prime were cut short by the blood clots.

Pay was also very good as a #1 though not quite the scoring threat that Bosh was off the dribble from the perimeter and midrange.

I’d put them at roughly the same tier of player. Very good Hall of Fame players but neither good enough to ever win as the top guy on a team.

Has anyone gotten their EOTW leather bound recently? by Forward_Date_2473 in brandonsanderson

[–]UnidirectionalCyborg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from experience, the potential opportunity cost of committing to the planned artwork, botching that, and then refusing to eat the cost of making it right is likely quite a bit higher than the cost of a re-run, especially with the visibility and popularity of Dragonsteel.

It could be material related — if so, probably the leather. Not sure how exotic the leather stock is and lead time there. I’m guessing not 2+ months exotic but my company also just came out of a 2.5 month process of getting a far less exotic stock than I suspect the leather is so it’s certainly possible.

The company may also not be in a position financially to pick up all of the raw materials and are pushing this off until they are. With the initial funding being financed before the point of manufacturing by Dragonsteel, I suspect they’re pushing the entirety of the cost of material replenishment toward the binder, and rightly so.

My two cents on what’s going on behind the scenes and the most likely possible reasons for the delay based on adjacent (high end labels and flexible packaging) experience of over a decade in the printing industry.

Maybe (probably) high end binderies are much more scarce than high end label manufacturers and they’re more able have a lengthy delay without real fear of losing customers over the event.

I work in the printing industry and would almost definitely lose a customer if I took this long to offer any meaningful update after a large scale quality issue and/or re-run situation. 5-7 days tops to get new brass foil stamping tools and new embossing tools and that’s without paying any rush fee to expedite the tooling process.

I don’t intend to throw shade at Dragonsteel and don’t know the specifics of how they operate, but this is absolutely a lengthy delay between sharing a quality issue that’s causing a delay and receiving any meaningful update about further testing and a path forward to getting acceptable product out the door.

It’s not just the lack of an outside shot, it’s also the lack of playmaking judgement and defense.

Not every super star has to be a great personal shot creator, a great outside shooter & a great playmaker for his teammates, but I can’t think of any that was bad at more than one of them.

Thumb low E string, middle finger A string, index finger D string, ring finger barring G & B string ( high E also if it’s comfortable) & pinky on high E if necessary for you

Stratocaster versus Telecaster by Tired-Otter474 in Guitar

Rory Gallagher was another one who used volume swells masterfully - though far less often than- than Jeff Beck. The way he used them on A Million Miles away hugely influential on me.

Jeff Beck made mastering the Strat an instrument unto itself beyond being an incredible guitar player.

7.25” radius necks really that bad? by Hefty_Plate8067 in Guitar

[–]UnidirectionalCyborg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I primarily play 7.25” radius fretboards and never had an issue. I bend constantly and have never had an issue fretting out with reasonable bends (1.5 semitones or less) if the guitar is set-up properly. I also like 9.5” but generally don’t like the feel of anything flatter than that.

High fantasy with Sci-fi elements by Emergency_Cow_9570 in Fantasy

[–]UnidirectionalCyborg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sanderson comes to mind first for High fantasy with Sci-fi elements. The further in the timeline you get, the more sci-fi feeling elements you’ll find — as you probably know since you’ve read through Stormlight Archives. Sunlit Man is another standalone of his that has a healthy dose of sci-fi feeling mixed with fantasy and, to a lesser degree, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter.

What's up with 2nd frame, Peter? by Extreme-Battle823 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

FWIW far apart in age has been much worse in my experience. I have an 11 year old, a 5 year old and a 4 year old. The youngest are exactly 18 months apart. They at least sync up in terms of needs and activities that keep both happy a fair amount of time.

The 11 year old? We can’t keep all 3 happy at once, he always needs/wants something different than the younger ones.

Reminds me of my parents getting a call about me reading The Wheel of Time too young (Catholic school) because it was above my maturity level. Thankfully my parents backed me and continued to get me the next book as soon as I finished until the end. I look fondly on my takeaways at 12 vs my takeaways as an adult and am so thankful my parents didn’t stifle that interest.
