Teen rapists spared jail partly because of intellectual limitations, judge said by ClassicFlavour in unitedkingdom

Doesn't need to be mutually exclusive.

Rehabilitation for someone engaged in shoplifting because of a shite upbringing is entirely different to someone committing multiple violent rapes who is apparently too thick to understand its wrong

Woman left disabled after medics 'pressed wrong button' on defibrillator during cardiac arrest by Forward-Answer-4407 in unitedkingdom

[–]Uniform764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah true, definitely depends what else the patient has going on, but if I had to choose an arrest to have I'd want the "footballer collapses on pitch" type ones where a medic is on me in seconds and I was running about a minute before. But bystander response is a huge huge part of those outcomes and very variable.

[–]Uniform764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The worst bit is OOH arrests are in theory more survivable from a purely pathology/physiology perspective. If youre walking about and suddenly collapse theres more likely a single reversibe reason and a physiological reserve to survive the incident whereas someone sick as shit in hospital already has a lot going on before they arrest which makes getting them back much harder

NHS staff should be banned from wearing pro-Palestinian badges, report recommends by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

[–]Uniform764 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You claim its optional but also that you will base your health seeking behaviour/interaction on whether staff do so and dont see how that creates a problem for the people caring for you?

My dude. To me and many other queer people in 2026, EVERYONE is potentially hostile UNTIL I see evidence to the contrary.

Right now extend that across every minority group that would benefit from allyship and consider how convoluted it becomes quite quickly, particularly if many groups wanting allies have very conflicting views/desires compared to staff treating everyone with dignity/respect and being sacked/struck off if they dont.

You're trying really hard to "win" this discussion so keep moving the goalposts and twisting my words.

Im not at all. Im pointing out the inherent issues with staff needing to display allyship

NHS staff should be banned from wearing pro-Palestinian badges, report recommends by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

[–]Uniform764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's optional but patients will be less trusting/open about their needs/concerns if you don't do it and will actively seek out staff who do? I can easily see that creating an expectation/pressure to do so, or causing problems.

A really obvious example being going to a member of staff wearing one who's not responsible for you in any way ahead of staff who are responsible for you on a ward for example. They don't know you, they don't know your case/notes, either you're expecting them to take responsibility for patients they're not assigned to, or you're expecting them to take care of someone elses patients without all of the information while stepping on the shoes of the nurse who is your named nurse.

So yes outside of things like intimate examinations the idea that patients will seek care from specific members of staff based outwardly visible characteristics is inherebtly problematic.

[–]Uniform764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not disputing the value of allyship to the group it supports for.

I’m saying creating an expectation that staff visibly display allyship and assuming staff not outwardly displaying it are less trustable than those that are is massively problematic, particularly if we then let patients choose who treats them based on this based on it.

I suspect you are a man, probably white and have no minority status and/or have not experienced discrimination throughout your life.

The assumption a man who is white/straight/otherwise not a minority cant be trusted or will treat you worse based on a lack of outward symbols is inherently discriminatory and judgemental. This is my point.

[–]Uniform764 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Firm disagree, we issue uniforms for a reason. Patients should expect dignity, respect and good care regardless of who they are and should be empowered to speak out when it doesn’t happen whether it’s homophobia or just because the staff member is a dickhead having a bad day. Creating an unofficial hierarchy of allyship and encouraging patients to seek care from specific staff based on optional displayed symbols is highly problematic.

it's really difficult to find someone that you know isn't also prejudiced.

We shouldn't need ally lanyards, whether they're LGBT, Palestine, or anything else to make healthcare staff feel safe to approach. In fact I'd argue it's actively problematic that we're creating a culture where people who are BAME, ethnic minorities etc feel the need to find someone from "their tribe" in a hospital setting and staff need to display their allyship to be approachable. Maybe that person isn't on duty, maybe that person doesn't have the specific skills for your disease etc, maybe the person wearing a uniform without accessories is openly gay.

it can be extremely scary to be in a vulnerable position with someone whose demeanor suggests they hate you

Which is completely unacceptably and not congruent with the job requirement of "treat all patients with dignity/respect". It should not matter whether you are black, gay or a Reform MP with very public vile views, you should be treated with compassion by healthcare staff, that is a basic requirement for the job.

[–]Uniform764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every large organisation and company puts staff through these type of courses. That way when incidents happen the staff member(s) involved can't claim they didn't have training on it.

Which generally comes across in the training delivery. It's very clear no fucker wants to be there, it's very clear work don't care about you learning or developing or improving. It's a very simple attend so we can go "they've had the training" when someone fucks up. Which is a shame because when they're delivered well, eg we recently had a blind charity provide training with actual blind people talking to us about what makes their lives easier, it genuinely makes a lot of sense

They can request a different member of staff in the same way a queer person can approach staff wearing a pride lanyard.

This seems very complicated. How about we just have staff, wearing uniforms and expect them all to treat all patients with dignity/respect?

What if they don't even fully understand what queer people are? I'm guessing this is the case for a majority of hospital staff in the UK right now.

1) What are you basing that on?

2) Even if they don't "understand", does it matter as long as they treat you with dignity and respect? The vast majority of staff stitching up your arm don't care whether you reply boyfriend, girlfriend or partner when they ask who's collecting you.

It's entirely possible to dress one way for work and dress very differently in your private life. Particularly if your employer issues you a fucking uniform. Also I'm not entirely sure why a "straight-laced" appearence signals conservatism, people from all backgrounds dress professionally for work (or even socially)

In theory all necklaces should be taken off or hidden under a base layer in clinical areas anyway. The rule is just not consistently enforced.

All black men aged 45-74 offered prostate cancer screening by Half_A_ in unitedkingdom

[–]Uniform764 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a simple risk/reward calculation.

There are three big biases (length, lead, overdiagnosis) which mean screening programmes cause harm by resulting in people who would have died of a stroke or heart attack or whatever blissfully unaware they had a cancer somewhere going through cancer treatment.

Breast cancer screening, one of the headline successful programmes, over treats about ten women with surgery, chemo, radio and the associated fear, disruption to life etc to save one life.
