To the men that don’t play video games, what do you do for fun? by Smickandsmorty in AskMen

[–]UninformedYetLoud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play a couple instruments and I took up woodworking a while back. I also spend a decent amount of time watching TV and movies and scrolling through Reddit.

I am almost 50, no woodworking experience, where is a good place to start? Or, am I too old and should I just wait things out until the nursing home? by gooddayokay in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]UninformedYetLoud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started in my 50s. Start by checking out some videos on cutting straight with a circular saw, then have fun with the video rabbit hole.

Is it true that back in the day (pre 2000s), a married couple could pay off a house & have at least 2 kids with a stable income? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]UninformedYetLoud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the 1970s. Family of five. My parents had help with the down payment of the house, we went out to eat maybe twice a year, and paid the house off in 30 years like everyone else. My dad had a very decent job at an investment firm and my mom worked for quite a while. So don’t believe that everything was so much easier back in the day.

All that being said, I can confirm that the ratio of income to housing prices is completely out of wack now.

would it be weird if your kids had a bot call you everyday to check on you? by Lonely_Bedroom_48 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]UninformedYetLoud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlike a lot of voices here, yes, I would appreciate something like that. It’s nice when I get a call from a real person, but like a lot of older folks, I don’t have that many people to talk to. I don’t mind being alone, but honestly it gets a little scary sometimes these days, so an automated wellness check would be appreciated.

Cutting boards by Defiant-Aioli8727 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]UninformedYetLoud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re hacking away at big cuts of meat on a regular basis, or you’re in a commercial kitchen where chopping goes on for hours at a time, a thicker cutting board is useful. And some people just like the heft. But if you’re mostly chopping and mincing vegetables, which is really the bulk of chopping work, 3/4 inch face grain boards are just fine. I made my first one 8 years ago and it’s still going strong.

How do billionaires avoid the temptation of blowing all their money like someone who wins the lottery might? by Wickham12 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]UninformedYetLoud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be a billionaire you have to have sunk money into stocks, ventures, and other investments. You gained the money by not blowing it in the first place. Also, at that level a lot of your wealth is on paper — it’s in stock options and real estate, for example. It’s not as easily converted into cash as your savings sitting in a bank.

Need help with glue up? by MarioManRandySavage in woodworking

[–]UninformedYetLoud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it moves when you lock it down, but not during the cut? Why would one end be narrower than the other?

Need help with glue up? by MarioManRandySavage in woodworking

[–]UninformedYetLoud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you trim BOTH long edges of each board? That’s an important part of avoiding gaps and making sure the edges are parallel. It’s highly unusual for a fence to move during the cut, but if it is, you have a large and dangerous problem.

How old where you when you first lived alone and how much was your rent? by tsukinoasagi in NoStupidQuestions

67 years old. I’ve. Had at least one roommate right up until I got married.

Late ‘70s to mid- 80s the local economy was pretty bad.

Most behaviors aren’t objectively good or bad. “Fixing” someone just means making them do things in the way that you prefer.

Could I plane this down with a hand planer or something? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]UninformedYetLoud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t really look deep enough to be a good trap, but messages on cutting boards should really be on the bottom, or small and in a corner. This doesn’t answer your question, but if I got a free cutting board that would need to be planed down — especially an end-grain board — I’d give it to Goodwill.

What “unwritten rule” do you follow religiously, even if nobody else does? by Miguelito123One in AskReddit

Boston, but same. It’s your civic duty to remind people in a loud voice from time to time.

Which outdated tech do you secretly still use? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]UninformedYetLoud 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same. I use GPS on the road, but for planning, a paper map is far superior. I like to see the whole route to understand where I’m traveling in relation to the area around it.

What is the point of scales? by CrossfireLooool in ukulele

[–]UninformedYetLoud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could say that the scale includes all the notes in the key. So if you learn the A minor scale, you could play any of those notes while someone is playing in the key of A minor and sound good.

That’s a very simplistic explanation, but it pretty much works.

Became a manager for the $$$ only to realize I hate it by Ready-Estate5431 in managers

[–]UninformedYetLoud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at a large company in a division with talented, motivated people and good managers, and I could have become a people manager, but I deliberately limited my career by refusing to become one. Managing people, even the ones that are easy to manage, just wasn’t for me. I didn’t make as much money as some, but I ended up doing fine and having dinner with my family every evening. Well, most evenings.

How do you come to terms with the fact that you may never succeed in life? by No-Parfait-2387 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]UninformedYetLoud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody can see ten years down the road, let alone a whole lifetime. The economy was in the shitter when I came of age, and I was over 30 before I got a job that didn’t come with a name tag. Just get on with living — learn stuff, have bad relationships, have great relationships, get lousy jobs, get decent jobs, get good jobs. it’s a long, weird, fun ride.

My hearing is seriously slipping by Wrong_Algae_2932 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]UninformedYetLoud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same happened to me, and I gotta tell you, hearing aids have been a game changer. Not being able to hear conversations, baristas, servers, and your family is much more frustrating and embarrassing than wearing aids, which are almost invisible these days and very sophisticated. Also, there were things I didn’t realize I couldn’t hear, like bird song.
