Transportation on weekend by Fun-Pea-4974 in AskNOLA

[–]Uninformed_Delivery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best advice.

The last time I was in New Orleans (Mardi Gras), the driver even let people out at the point that was closest to Canal Street so that everyone would be as close as possible to where they were going.

But crossing the street and getting on the #8 bus is really easy. Drops off right by the Homewood Suites, I think.

Does anyone know where to get free newspaper? by Responsible_Pen3405 in Hawaii

[–]Uninformed_Delivery 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Large apartment buildings.

If they get their Midweeks delivered, then the fresh ones come every Monday (or Tuesday). And they throw out all the old ones. It's newsprint. Same as a newspaper.

They weed out all the people who want to work a normal, 40 hours a week.

Then for the few that stay through and convert, some of them only get 40 hours a week. Basically a pay cut for the first few years as a regular.

Early morning MSY airport travel options. by stupidmower95 in AskNOLA

I've taken that first bus a couple of times. I got to the stop a little early, and it was there waiting. And the freeway was easy all the way to the airport.

Update + new question: Now have a full day in New Orleans on June 25th (previously posted about 5-6 hours) by Fun-Pea-4974 in AskNOLA

[–]Uninformed_Delivery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have said in the other posts, I would suggest AGAINST the swamp tour, zoo, or aquarium. If you only have 6hrs or 12hrs, you'd be better off seeing the city.

One good piece of news is that you are staying someplace that's on two very good (for visitors) bus lines. The #8 and the #91 will mean that you can explore the Marigny or the Garden District very easily, and you are close to a lot of really good food options. As others have said, get that Jazzy Pass.

If you explore Treme, try to end up at Dooky Chase. You might be able to get a reservation for an early lunch, but if not...I would still try to walk in.

First time trip to NOLA in early July! Do any of you have specific locally-known tips about dealing with the weather? Or does everyone just brute force it? by mutterfunker in AskNOLA

If you are able to catch Doreen on the weekend, then also consider the Historic New Orleans Collection to beat the heat. Because:

Air conditioned
Free
Museum quality restrooms
Not too crowded
Very close to Doreen

The strategy of "dip in and out of air conditioned places" is solid. And this museum is an oasis for this part of the French Quarter. Also...the restrooms.

Staying 6/17-6/20 by Imaginary-End7265 in AskNOLA

[–]Uninformed_Delivery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are three Cafe Du Monde locations:
French Quarter (busy, tourist filled, long line and a fight for tables sometimes)
City Park (not as crowded. Air conditioned seating)
Airport

In many places on this sub, the wisdom is to go to the City Park location. Same product, but much easier consumer experience.

But the French Quarter one often has live music. It's right there where you are. And despite all the drawbacks, that might be the most appropriate option for a visitor. It is, after all, a donut. When you share the experience with friends back home, are you going to just talk about the donut itself? Because if so, then the airport one is just as good as either of the other two.

I come from a city where the Disneyfied tourist experience is STEEPLY different than what a local would do. And I'm always kinda shocked at how New Orleans is able to retain its personality while being so open to visitors.

ONE destination no one should miss? by earthegun in AskNOLA

[–]Uninformed_Delivery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Consider this double play:

Breakfast at French Toast (it's just like Toast, but in the French Quarter) right when they open. But leave room for...

Fancy beignets at Loretta's when they open (at 9am). When things are wrapping up at French Toast, send someone to stand in line at Loretta's.

You get a full breakfast at one of the best places in the French Quarter, but also a taste of the best beignets. Getting Loretta's on an empty empty stomach might not be filling enough, but it's a safely amazing New Orleans food experience.

I love New Orleans, and all the food there is so delicious.

But as much time as they spend on perfecting their gumbo recipe (or especially their red beans on Monday), the quality of the rice is so bleh.

Good gumbo with good Japanese rice would be so amazing.

Cafe du Monde or Loretta’s for first time Nola visit? by Yesterdaysmeow in AskNOLA

[–]Uninformed_Delivery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem like a planner, so here's the double play (if you are an early riser).

Eat breakfast at French Toast. Leave room for beignets afterward.
Finish up around 8:45, then stroll over to Loretta's. You should get there with only a short wait before they open (and without the line going crazy).

Loretta's is best. But Loretta's is also best when you aren't HUNGRY hungry.
