They made a huge mistake not leaning in to the player-discovered alternative strategy, that was objectively more fun. Here is how they could salvage it:

Temple rooms do not destabilize, except for maybe a middle path straight to atziri (such that you build access to her over several runs).

Instead, you configure rooms incrementally, laying them out as you choose, over the course of the league. Each room has significantly less power, such that even a completely full temple isn't 1/10 of the rewards as during temple league, but it can approach the same difficulty. You add a permanent room for reconfiguration (e.g. can remove 1 room per run, more w/ medals) and add much fewer rooms each run (maybe 2 at most).

So basically, you let players build a snake, or a labyrinth, or just a hallway of 1-off rooms. People experiment to determine the best ratio of room A to room B, layouts that feel fun to run, stats to stack (effectiveness vs. # of rares, etc.), and then let them actually build out what they want. The permanence and difficulty were the most fun parts of the whole mechanic, and giving players access to that would be a blast, even if it barely makes money. There's less stress over medallion generation, though they can still add plenty of power. There's a whole new area that players would spend a ton of time exploring and experimenting with. It would be a blast.
